I made a grow box out of a Rubbermaid tub i had. I have Five 26 watt Cfls and a homemade rig for them. I went to wal-mart and got a timer, Miracle-Grow Potting mix, Four 8" clay pots, 22 peatmoss Jiffy-Pots, and 2 cans of white paint.

This is just a little experiment. I spray painted the inside of the tub white and installed the light rig in the cover. i have an old bathroom vent that installed in the bottom. The lights are going to be on a timer im not sure if i am going to do 18 or 16 hours of light (suggestions?). I am going to have 20 starter plants in the Jiffy-Pots then i am goin to narrow it down to 4. I Have just started germinating 2 different types of some pretty good bagseed. My goal is to have 4 small females make it to harvest. Pretty soon i am going to take of the lid and get another tub to replace it for more room. After the third set of leaves i am going to start topping all the plants. I will update the log often.

So i checked the seeds this morning. They still havent popped open yet. What I did is i used a damp papertowel. Put the seeds in it and left it on my window cill. I think they should be ready by tommorow.

i am going to paint the outside of the box black to prevent the light coming thru.

if your trying to germinate those seeds it probablly wont be best to putt them on a window sill...to germinate its usually better to put in a dark warm place like your grow box without the lights on...just thought i would put in my two cents.

Yeah i moved them their just little bit ago. i had them on the window cill during the day so the sun could heat them up a bit. tey were in 2 seperate bags so the moisture couldnt escape rapidly. I am going to check them in the morning to see if any have popped open.

So today i painted the outside of the box black. i also installed the fan into the cover and made an irrigation system for when the plants get bigger. a couple of seeds have popped open. i am going to plant them tonight. should i startthe light schedule when i plant them? or should i leave them in the dark for a little?

Here is the pic of the box. u can see were i installed the fan. PS. the fan is just a bathroom vent stripped down.

Either is fine, but the lights tend to dry the soil out faster then just leaving them in a dark place.

Also about the light schedule, give them at least 18 hours. There are some articles around that say 20/4 had the best results.

Happy growing

i like the box , i was also thinkin about useing this method or idea but then i thought i need big plants so the closet got picked,

Im doing a 22/2 shed untill 12/12 i want it to grow the fastest but i want to give the lights a rest atleast once a day for two hours

yeah i think i am going to do 18. Dont want the electric bill to high lol.
So far i have 6 seeds planted. 1 Red and 5 Green. I have 2 types of seeds so i named them. Red was pretty good mids and green was really pretty but not as good. hopeflly i can turn them both into some fire ass ganja. I burried them about a fingernail deep inthe soil. I got the box ready to go. Hopefully tommorow there will be some life.

I tried making a watering system. i used a 10 qt trashcan and put 2 holes in the bottom. then i stuck two 3 way conectors in the hole and it is water tight. After that i ran 4 tubes and stuck another 3 way to split it. Then i ran them into the plants. I thought it would work but the water doesnt stop coming out and it soaked the soil. i also had the bucket above the box. Was it up to high? Advice please..:wtf:

Im not an expert on watering systems (let alone growing in general)
But if this is your first/second grow. I would stay back from an automatic watering system, because of these babies not needing alot of water to grow.

You can run into problems like over-watering, mold, and worst of all since they are seedlings ive had them never sprout and turn dark brown/black basically dead.

18/6 is usually the best schedule from reading around but ive had great success from 24/0

Do you have a thermometer? If not it is important to get one especially with one that checks humidity.

On a thread on here it says that you want the temps around 78, also the humidity at around 40% for young babies and as low as possible for flowering to prevent mold.

Check out my setup i used bins like you did but i upgraded my Grow room alot, the oldest one had another bin on top with 12-26w CFL's on the top lid.

If i were you id go 18/6, mine grew faster on this then 24/0. Just seem to give the plant a chance to catch up to its self, sort of a breather:thumbsup:

Just a thought:rasta:

I would have to agree with LetsSeeya. I ran 18/6 on my first grow and on my current grow I am running 24 hours of light. If I wasn't dealing with the cold issues I have and didn't need the light to be on to take care of these issues I would definetly run a 18/6.

I feel like the plant has alot of things going on during its night period and just make the girl that much better. Could be just me though!

Yeah that would be to hard on the electric bill lol. why dont u get a heater to put in the room.

Its a closet without insulation so whatever the temp is outside usually means thats what is going to be the temp for inside. I'm in the process of making a grow box as we speak and it'll be done by this week. From now on 18/6 after this batch is flower.:D

Just a tip for the box your making, stick with the flat white paint instead of foil. The foil shouldnt be much of a problem with the lights youre using, but just as a rule if you cant get mylar or something similar, flat white paint is the best alternative.

wyldeganja30
02-04-2010, 11:37 PM
Well the problem with the paint is that it kept chipping off. and i dont want paint chips in the soil. other wise i would have stuck with it. but i am going to get some mylar soon

It seems like you're not using the right kind of paint. I did a similar rubbermaid grow and used white spray paint for the inside, and I never experience any kind of chipping. You need spray paint that's specific for plastics. However, if you're going to invest in mylar, that would be the best choice by far.

Another thought I was having about your setup is that maybe you should combine two rubermaids to make the container larger and give the plants some room to grow. Perhaps use the smaller one you have currently to veg the plants and then put them into the bigger container to flower.

Yeah this is just for the little guys. When they are ready for flowering i am getting two 35 gallon tubs and using those. i am actually thinking about making a mother plant and making a hydroponic system for the clones. Maybe an Eben Flow with a bubbler in it.I was also going to invest in a 400w hps. but the ballast and sheild are pretty expensive. Just ideas i still got a litle bit of time to figure it out.

I had 8 sprouts early this morning. i was gone for like 10 hours and i rushed to water them and i got home and 1 was dead. there are now 7 sprouts, 6 green and 1 red. 4 seeds still havent sprouted. i got one seed from an 8th of some good weed today. i just started germinating it.

I still have 8 sprouts. I transfered them into 18oz plastic cups. and i put white pebble on top to keep in moisture and reflect light. I was looking for carbonated water to spray on the leaves and i was stuck between club soda, sodium free club soda, and sodium free seltzer. so i got the seltzer and was was hoping on anyones input to wether or not that is just plain carbonated water?

I got two 40 gallon tubs today. i am going to make those into a bigger growbox. ill prolly put the plants in there in about 2-3 weeks. Maybe less then that. I am also picking up stuff for the next grow which is going to be hydroponic. Plants looking good.

Its day 6. Everything is going great, plants are looking real good. Went to walmart and got Two 40wt cfls. 2720 lumens and 2700k. I also got a couple y splitters at lowes, it all came out to about 30 bucks. so when i got home i replaced the middle light and put a y splitter with the two 40wt on it. i now have 4 26wt and 2 40wt. a total of 12,240 lumens. i was gona get the 68wt but it is way to big for the grow box. i might get one for flowering though. everything is coming together now.

Keep your lights as close as possible to keep it that tight bush you want, so in flower they can get what height they want. Its more important to have close light vs ''lots'' of light while growing up seedlings.

Good luck:rasta:
