View Full Version : Yet Another First Grow

This started on the 1st, I was surprise to find a seed in my weed and decided to try and germinate it in a shot glass. The following day it sunk like a rock to the abyss. I had some miracle grow potting soil so I placed it in a solo cup and placed it on my hot water heater, 5 days later it came out of the ground. It so far seems quite happy under a 18W/75w cfl bright light bulb with a foil projecting light downward.
When should this be transplanted, is a 1x1 cube pot going to be large enough, when do I need to get a metal halide light, when do I have to be concerned about the smell and what might cover the smell??? This will be growing in a small storage closet within my home, 4x4x8 will this be large enough?
thanks

When should this be transplanted
Depends on how fast it grows. Sorry, no concrete answer for this. Hopefully you have drainage holes in the bottom of the cup. When the roots start coming out the bottom, it's time to transplant.
is a 1x1 cube pot going to be large enough
1 foot x 1 foot I'm guessing? How many gallons? Might be a little too large for the first transplant. I like to re-pot 4 times, ending with a transplant into a 4 gallon a week or two into flowering. Having 5 gallon containers for the last transplant is a pretty safe bet. Tough to say without knowing the strain and flowering time, as this dictates the size of the pot needed (also veg time). when do I need to get a metal halide light
Wait until it's about 5 nodes, and start with the light much higher than optimum and gradually lower it to your plant. The increased light could be stressful at first to your plant. Be sure to check on temperatures and that there is plenty of airflow also.

Best is to use a carbon filter to scrub the air. Google it and you can find many DIY's, even on this site: http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs/99371-diy-how-carbon-filter.html

Should be plenty of space.
My next suggestion is to read, read, and read some more. So much info out there but it will take a lot of time and effort to digest it all, and a grow to put that theory into knowledge. Browse around these forums in the Basic Growing sections, Indoor Growing sections, Grow Room setup, Lighting... etc. and read through all the stickies and FAQ's. If you are stuck, there is almost always someone here to help you (but your own efforts will go a long way to earning respect here).
Good luck and happy growing

Wait until it's about 5 nodes
I take that back... with an 18w light (75w equivalent?) it will take a while for that to reach 5 nodes, and it will stretch a lot. I put mine under a 400w hps after about 2-3 nodes. I started out with the light very high up and slowly brought it closer. Granted, this is a major waste of electricity using such a powerful light for one tiny plant.
Read up on lumens... aim for 5000 lumens per square foot at all times.
