1000 watt light venting holes?

OK her we goe with the dumb questions LOL

I have a 1000 watt hps i got from a friend, and and dont quite understand the duct/vent holes on it. It is glass sealed and has a 4" vent hole on the side going directly into the glass sealed bulb area,then there is a 4" hole on the very top above the reflector. So my question is, would i vent straight from outside into the side hole of the light with no fan then vent out the top into an inline fan and then out of the room, or do i have it all wrong.
any help would be great

Hey, just a thought are you going to use the inline fan to extract just the heat of the bulb or keep the one end open to draw out also the growing area heat? You didn't mention the grow space so I am guessing a whole room or? I use a 400w air cooled hood in both of my grow logs but thats not even close to the amount of air your going to want to move depending on your garden.
