View Full Version : Opinions on two possible 600 watt HPS setups?

As a newly minted mm patient, I am attempting to plan out my first grow. I have chosen a Hydrohut Silver 3x3x7.5' tent as a perfect place for me to complete my first grow (veg + flower). After the first grow, I intend to set up another area for clones/veg, and the 3x3 hydrohut will be a flowering room for about 6 plants.

Anyhow, I have become interested in two different 600 Watt HPS setups. The cost is almost identical for both systems, at roughly $550.

1) System # 1

Sun System Yieldmaster Reflector w/ 6 inch
$119.95
Item #: 904382

Sunlight Supply Ballast Ss1 Hps 600w
$299.95
Item #: BALHPSSI600

HPS Bulb 600 watt Hortilux Eye
$129.95

Total = $549.85

2) System # 2

Hydrofarm Powerhouse 600W 120/240v HPS Ballast
$309.00

Hydrofarm 19" Cool Tube w/ cord
$124.95

Hortilux Super HPS Enhanced Spectrum Bulb, 600W
$117.95

Total: $551.90

I realize this can be done cheaper, but I put a premium on a reliable ballast, as I am paranoid about my house burning down. :( Any thoughts? :stoned:

Either one would be fine for the tent. If you plan to grow your plants tall, be aware that the reflector in system #1 will occupy ~ 12" or more at the top of the tent. The cool-tube will be more flexible in a tent, giving you the option of hanging it vertically, if plant height becomes an issue. :thumbsup:

I use 2 Sun System Yieldmaster Reflector w/ 6 inch. I love them
Their is another hood for like 10$ more of the same brand that has a deeper hood and reflects the light more down rather than spread out This depends on the size of your growing area. If I could go back I would get the deeper reflector because I use 2 in my grow lab and the light is more brighter in certain spots.

Thanks all. I should mention that I'm going to keep these purchases strictly cash (which means no internet purchases!) Yes, everything is legal, but old habits die hard.

:wtf:

(this is supposed to be me being paranoid of the black helicopters!)

Anyhoo, I think I like the Hydrofarm Cool Tube Reflector with the Sunlight Supply ballast. With those play nice together?

HydroFarm cords MAY or MAY NOT be compatible with Sunlight Supply equipment? Better check that out...:thumbsup:

Thanks Dutch.

Though I have a feeling that the guy who stocks only Hydrofarm is gonna say 'no'! Imma see what Google knows about the subject.

Peace!

OlDrippy;
If you have your heart set on the SS ballast, just get a SS cool-tube, too. A cool-tube is a cool-tube. :thumbsup: :twocents:

Thanks Cartman. I'm newbie enough to have thought that "Cool Tube" was a trademark or something...

I've decided to go with the SS stuff not only because of the consensus here, but also because I just got back from the Hydrofarm dealer (Hydrospots) and they were kind of dicks to me there.

Oh well. More cash for SGS! :rastasmoke:
