View Full Version : Cloning hormone needed?

It's been a while since I have grown but when I did about 15 years ago, I was growing hydroponic. Anyway, when I first started cloning I was using powder, moved to gel and eventually stopped using anything at all. In fact I stopped using it when I tested two trays of clones from the same mother, one with hormone and one without and there was no noticeable difference in rooting time between the two trays. Eventually I was just giving them a spray a couple times a day with a very dilute seaweed mixture with no tent or anything. Just in the rockwool rooting cubes out of the direct light.
So my question is: it's been a few years, is the hormone actually doing anything more these days? Has there been any change in the formulas that would make me want to actually buy this overpriced snake oil? Has anyone here actually done side by side tests and noticed any real advantage to using gel or powder?
As a sort of aside rant, I suspect that many things people spend money on when growing are not really needed. I think people just like to have all the fancy stuff so they can feel like they "grew" the best plant they could when really the plant is programmed to do what it will do and all you can really provide is an optimal environment to make the most of the genetics you have. If you have crap seeds all the money you spend won't help and if you have dank seeds you can pretty much just put it in some dirt and make sure it has good drainage, light and water and it will be 90% the plant it would have been with all those extra bottles of junk. In fact the more you add to your grow procedure the harder it is to tell what happened when something goes wrong.
/rant off.
Root hormone, yea or nay? Ever tried rooting without?

"Root hormone, yea or nay? Ever tried rooting without? "
Used Rootone 'til I ran out.
Now I just fill a beer bottle with tap water.
Also ran a side by side with superthrive.
No discernable difference!

I have found gel works better than powder. Gel in an aero-rooter works awesomely fast 2-5days depending on the strain.

I found gel to work better for hydro set ups and the powder for soil/soiless and rockwool....

you are just talking about bubble/aero cloner....
i dont really have any interest as i am a soil grower and i dont think that it would work out so good...
i might be wrong and i am looking at going DWC so in the near future i will have to make a bubble cloner...

Pretty much it's a tuperware tub with a lid with a fish pump. Stupid simple and will produce a massive root base (which u want for soil or any grow).....All my soil people can't get enough of these explosive growing females.... And u can get as many as u want under cheap T5's....

-JRoots are roots man. The plant doesn't care where you put it as long as it can grow.

I'm not to sure what this bubble cloner contraption is your talking about!?!?! There is no dome or bubble on my set up. I spray the tops onces in a while with plain water that's it..

has a reservoir with water/nutes and an air stone that makes the watter "bubble"and splash onto the rooting area... kinda like aero but simple bro
i am all about simple and redundant

Me too. The rooting stem and roots on mine never come out of the warter though. It just recurculates water and air through the pump...

That bubble cloner is a good idea, but you must be able to maintain a balanced pH. That is when a pH pen is a must. One fluctuation and you'll be thinking everything is wrong with that b*tch IMHO. Just jiffy pellet them suckers or plant them straight into soil itself. Just remember to scrape off a little bit at the bottom of the cutting and apply your rooting hormone and 10 days later, you should have roots. Also remember they are NOT called clones until they have rooted. They are cuttings beforehand, rooted, and then called clones! Just a tad more info so you don't get confused and call your cuttings clones.

and i would say soak your peat cubes in rhizotonic solution for 24 hours befor planting clones 5ml to 2 litres of water works well for me soon they will be spurting roots so fast you will need bigger cubes lol
i believe that used right rhizotonic is way ahead of any rooting hormone on the market today you apply it to your soil/soiless medium 24hours before planting clones then feed them with it once a week when watering
