Well, a friend of mine recently gave me a pipe (looks similar to this one**) but I noticed it had been used before. Just to be safe I wanted to clean and sanitize it. I've looked all over the internet for a good way, and I eventually came across the boiling technique. I just boiled it for 20 minutes and am now wondering if it's safe to use? Also, what would be a good way to be rid of the resin the collected around the end of the stem?

The boiling didn't make my house smell too bad. 'course my stove is next to a window and a door--both of which were open. Does rubbing alcohol and salt kill any bacteria and germs that might be residing on the mouthpiece and/or in the pipe itself? That's why I wanted to boil it cause I heard that boiling can kill bacteria and germs.
Umm, could you tell my how to use rubbing alcohol and salt? It can't be too hard, lol.
Also, DID boiling it for 20 minutes kill the stuff that could've been residing within it? I'm paranoid about catching something, :(
Thanks for any and all future help.

No it will not. Boiling water only gets up to 212 degrees F. For EVERYTHING to be killed A minimum of 256 degrees F for at least 25 minutes. HepC and TB will survive boiling water. I was a tattoo artist many years ago and had to give it up due to bad nerve damage in my shoulder and arm.

dont boil your pipe, thats the dumbest thing you can do especially if its a glass piece, it weakens the temper of the glass. which means they break easier. use rubbing alcohol, its cheap and wont hurt the piece in anyway. Be smart people you spend money on the stuff take care of it.
How to properly clean a glass piece or any piece for that matter:
1. Get a ziploc bag
2. put your piece in there with enough iso alcohol to cover it
3. let it sit in there for a while(really depends how bad the pipe is)
4. after a while shake the bag up
5. take pipe out and rinse it out with the hottest water your hands can stand
6. any leftover residue can be easily removed with pipe cleaner sticks or Q-tips
7. after its dry load it up and toke
8. dont listen to bad advice!!
