Back on the scene with my second indoor grow! This time its Blue City Diesel (BCD). It's Blueberry x NYC Diesel. Original seeds were obtained from Jordan of the Islands. I grew them outdoors this past summer and bred some seeds as well.
The setup:
3x3x7 closet
Procyon 100
4 26w CFLs (5500k for veg 2700k for flower)
Aerospring Garden (kind of an Aero/DWC combo)
50lb CO2 tank to be implemented at the onset of flower
4'' PC fan in ceiling for exhaust into the attic
8'' floor fan for circulation
Liquid Earth nutes: Grow, Bloom, Vigor and Super Thrive (drop a gal)
3" net cups
Hydroton
Cocoplugs (don't quote me on the name)
They're already on day 21 of veg so I'll backtrack a bit and give a brief history:
Lights are 13" from the canopy and are on 18/6 for veg. Pump timer is on 15min/15min during dark periods and full time during the "day". Had some pump, fan and res. issues...fixed em'. Nothing major. Also having humidity problems, can't get it above 30% (dry Winter air). Going to get a humidifier. A few fan leaves are showing signs of stress because of this (droopy). Now I have a bowl of water and a wet rag in the closet. That's all I can do for now. Added nutes on day 10 at about 25% strength. 1st res change on day 15, upped nutes to about 40% plus a drop a gal. of Super Thrive. Topped 5 of the 8 plants on day 21. They all had about 5 nodes. I will ScroG these babies once they're sexed and reach the screen. They're just starting to put off their scent, got a whiff today. Not bad. Pics are at about wk 2. More pics soon to come! Thanks for stopping by, this is gonna be fun! The BCD is a great smoke. Seemingly sativa dominant, it gives an uppety high that'll get you outside for sure. Great for yardwork! Has kind of a fruity/dieselly smell.

I think that's why. I got mine up about 10% and they're so much happier. Still need to get it higher though. Humidity, that is.

Added a humidifier, seems to be doing the trick but apparently it needs a few days to be broken-in. They're starting to smell a bit now. Pungent. One of them(back row 2nd from left) was bent somehow, but healed itself so now its growing LST all by itself. With the exception of the two runts I topped them all and they've responded well by immediately shooting two new shoots.
Enjoy the pics!

OK I"m back. Holidays, etc. They are almost ready for 12/12. They're touching the screen now and when I bend a few branches back thru the screen I'll flip to bloom. This will also coincide with the next res change in a couple days... The pics are a couple weeks old. More to come soon.
Added some CalMag last week. Only one plant seems to need it though. I guess it's a heavy feeder, maybe more on the Diesel side of things. Don't want to up the nutes too much though and hurt the others, so I'm keeping the nutes at about 50% strength for now. See yall soon!
ps I removed the "runt" and sacrificed it to the snow Gods. Down to 6 now.

Looking good! Removed a few dying lower leaves today. pH is dropping like crazy. Gonna change the res. tomorrow. and put em' on 12/12. They're all just starting to poke through the screen.
There seems to be an ongoing debate on when to flower plants in ScroG. Most seem to start it after bending a few branches back through the screen. Some do it when 30% of the screen has been filled. So I'm doing it a little on the early side it seems. But with the LED's lack of penetration, this is best and will hopefully keep the canopy relatively even.
Outdoors this year the BCD blasted off at the onset of flowering and more than doubled in size. Can't wait for it to happen in my closet! PEace

looking good.. i am thinking about trying a SCRoG soon-ish..
looks like a good way to use cfl and i am really curious about how it will work with a LED setup..
if that works well for you i may just end up giving it a try..
hope all works out well and you get mad weight..

Thx Maine,
ScroG worked good last time, but did get a little out of control because I let them veg for too long.
Changed the reservoir today:
Removed existing H20
Flushed each net pot with approximately 1pint of plain tap H20 to remove salt build-up
Flushed system (pump, sprayers, pvc) with plain tap for 10min
Removed the "flush waste"
Added 10 gal of pH'd tap H2O
Added 1/2 strength (5tsp each) Vigor, Bloom, CalMag + 15 drops of SuperThrive
Replaced cfls with 4 26w 2700k cfls. Switched light timer to 12/12. Will implement C02 at the first sign of a pistil. vaporized

you can add a drop of non-antibacterial soap to the mix (1 pint that you used) to help removed the salt buildup.
can't wait to see that screen fill in...er out!

Thx shake. I'll try that next time.
Something I've never seen before...the day after switching to bloom nutes and 12/12 a few of the plants showed this weird bulge at the nodes. (see pics) It looks like it could be new growth, but I'm not sure They all seem very happy though. Any thoughts?

Some heavy producing varieties have a supportive girdle which helps hold up the heavy fruiting limbs.
Totally normal there, Joe!

awesome! thanks MP. That explains why some had it and some not. I'm guessing the Diesel heavy phenos are the ones with it as they can get huge and the BB not so much. Some more pics from today...
I also forgot to mention that my pump timer is on fully during the photo period and set to 15min on/15min off during dark. I originally set it to 15/15 in the summer to try and keep my res. temps down. Now my purpose is to let them dry out a bit between sprays so give em a bit of a nute break. I hope this makes sense.

Ripped out a male yesterday which brings us down to five. None of the others have any signs of being dudes yet so fingers crossed.
Turned on the CO2 today. I have it on for the first hour of the photo period then 15min on/15min off until dark. Not sure what my ppms are. This setting brings it to roughly 1000 If i remember correctly. I need to get more CO2 test thingys to see where it's at.
I raised the Procyon a couple inches too. Some of the leaves directly under the LEDs got a bit toasted. It's now 12" above the canopy. peace

your co2 rig is injecting 1000 PPM of gas, or your getting 1000 PPM reading? you should have between 1000-2500 PPM of co2 in the air normally if i'm not mistaken.
you are running it sealed right?

Honestly, I forget. I need to get more refills and re-check. The room is not sealed. There's a 4" pc fan for exhaust on 24/7. To compensate for the exhaust should I ramp up the CO2 or put the fan on a timer and keep it off when C02 is on? Overheating is not an issue during winter.

you really want a sealed run when running co2. also, you want higher temps. the higher temps increase the plants metabolic rate which allows it to use the extra co2 that you are pumping in.
at least put the fan on a timer. there's no need to waste all that co2. not to mention it's a health hazard!
good growing!

Well, pulled 5 males yesterday. Down to one, and she's (better be!) the scragglyiest of the bunch. It's the one that I had to LST after she was injured (got bent over). After tomorrow's res. change I hope she'll get happier and spread her wings throughout the closet. I'm not sure if what I see is nute burn or leftovers from the light being too close. Gonna ramp the nutes down next fill.
She was pretty much smothered by the others so now she's got the place to herself!

Res. Change:
flushed for about 30min with plain tap water
added 10 gal of pH'd tap water that sat for 24 hrs
nutes at about 40% strength
15 drops of Super Thrive
No cal mag was added this time, because this particular plant never seemed to have a deficiency when the others did. I also raised the Procyon again about 3", so now it's at 15" above the canopy. Some of the newer growth seems to be producing some spindly looking leaves that canoe and curl down. Not sure what is causing this.
So, when I cut the males i was left with this tangled root mass. All 6 were in a big clump in the reservoir. I pulled out as much as I could without damaging the live roots. I'll never get it all out so I'll just have to keep an eye on the pump so it doesn't clog. I'm also a bit worried that the dead roots stuck in there may rot and become a breeding ground for disease or pests.
questions?comments?

I am about to face the same problem with the roots roting. Thats one of the downsides of growing from seed in these types of systems I guess.

Ladies and gentlemen...we have a pistil! She's looking better than before and is settling into her home nicely. Got a new timer for the exhaust fan and get home to find out that it only works in 30min increments and I need it to be 15min. That's what I get for $5. Here's some pics. Boring i know, but just imagine the bud porn to come! It's gonna be sweet!

BTW, the foil on the reservoir is covering the holes that I don't have plugs for. Don't want any light in there!
Riddle me this....I measured CO2 yesterday with the exhaust fan on and it was roughly between 500-1000ppm, turned the fan off and 24hrs later measured, and the CO2 was barely 500ppm. Not sure how this is possible. My CO2 measuring device is cheap, maybe it's just not accurate. It's the big syringe type. You fill it with air from the grow room, then attach a glass rod to the end and push the air through the rod which makes the white stuff in the rod turn purple and whatever # aligns with where the purple turns back to white is your reading. I have no immediate plans to spend $100's on a real tester, so...whatever. FOund some keif tucked away in the cabinet last night! NOt even sure when/where it came from but I like it!

can't help ya with the co2 problem. if your room is not airtight perhaps the exhaust is slowing the dissepation of the gas? just a thought.
congrats on the kief! awesome score.

OK, so I get a new, heavy duty timer, $15 this time, gotta be sweet right? Nope, this one can only go on/off every 6 hrs. FUckin xmas lights and their heavy duty timers! I'll get it right, don't worry. Turned the exhaust back on today with the extra humidity, tons of rain today. There goes the snow.
So, some new pics and a brief tutorial for anyone new to ScrOG. Basically, when a top gets an inch or two above the screen you press it back under so the top grows into the next hole in the screen.
Pics: Tops above screen
Tops pushed under screen

So with the ScroG basically you would just pull it back under and move it over a few spaces so its not sticking straight up, more on an angle into a whole that was either becide or a few away. Orrr do you mean literally once it pops threw one hole you then bend if over down into a hole becide it? Im confused lol, maybe you could take a better pic and label. Im gonna be doinga scrog so, just curious haha. THanks jOe.
Joefarmer
01-30-2010, 12:29 AM
No, I don't bend em over into another hole, I push em back down and move em over to the next hole, so they kinda grow horizontally along the underside of the screen. GOod luck!

Yeah, I've seen the weaving thing too. If I had enough plants that's probably what I'd do, but with just the one I can just spread her wings nicely.
All is well here. I was away for a week and got back to find the pH right-on at 5.5! Left her at about 6.2 before I left. ENjoy the pics

Looking good. This strain looks like its not going to be a stretcher during flower. Thats the thing about scrog if its a new strain u should probably grow it out first in full to see how it stretches during flower. This will help you understand if you need to let the plant veg longer and grow the branches out first or if you can put the screen on during flower as the branches might stretch like hell. Im gonna do a SoG with my grow Cab, DOnt really feel like going out to get metal mesh or w.e. Is that only one plant in that DWC bucket?
Joefarmer
02-11-2010, 02:10 AM
Yeah, my last grow stretched like crazy and I didn't scrog em enough. Turned out ok though. I did grow the BCD last summer and one pheno stretched and the other didn't. Guess I got the non stretchy one. Too bad, I would've loved to fill the screen. It was the only fem out of seven and was the smallest, most shaded one too. She bounced back nicely though once she had the place to her self.

CO2 tank ran out. 7th week of flower. I don't think I'll refill the tank this grow. They're not gonna get much bigger. All clear trichs. Tough to gauge harvest time w/LED. I went 15wks last grow. Gotta find a nice fast finisher. I'm thinking Romulan. I've never tried it, but the yield is good and it finishes in 8wks if I'm not mistaken.

Flushing! Added some Clearex this time to help leach the salt nutrient build-up. 1/2 tbsp/gal, added to plain tap. Will flush for up to an hour with this solution, remove it, then fill the res. w/ plain water again and adjust the pH. Then run it for a week or two. The foliage is still a very deep green, so I want them to use up all that energy. I may be a little late on this but it's still hard to tell when these babes are ready under LEDs. These finished much faster than my last bunch.

Yeah, 2-3" above or so. She filled maybe 70% of the screen. I thought she would stretch more at 12/12. Why do you ask? Not the pheno I wanted, but it should be nice smoke. 5-7 more days and I'm choppin'!
I've got some seedlings started hempy style, and will be finding a mother soon. May start a log for that too.

04-14-2010, 02:08 AM
We're back...so I hung her for about 10days at 60-65deg. Then popped her in a jar, and burped it once a day for a week or so. So it's 22 days cured, and the nice flavor is kickin' in. A couple more weeks and it'll be thweet! Great stone. Uppety (not as intense as Diesel), lasting for hours , with a tinge of chhhiiiillll ( BB represent!). Purple/blue hues at the tops and glistening. Resin production is off the chain under LED's! She gave less than ozwald. Buds not super dense, but still very nice.
Makin some moms (BCD, ?strain) . If I may plug my new hempy set-up, which will then lead into another Procyon 100 thread. Maybe. Peace ya'll. :rastasmoke:

so how much did you end up yielding?
how many days was flowering?
i am considering LED's instead of 150 HPS's.
i have been able to yield 112-140 grams using 2 150 watt HPS, 4 plants in DWC, SCROG on 3.8 sq ft of screen (2 screens, each screen 12"x18").
i just wonder if LED's will be able to replicate that...
thanks in advance...
