New to growing

Hey everyone, I'm mike and i'm about to start my first grow. It's only going to be one plant just to see if it works out. I really don't have a lot of money, it's kinda just using things around the house. I'm actually pretty good with electricity and lights, i'm a lighting design major in college. What are the basics one needs to start growing? Like i said before i've never grown anything before lol.

What i have:

-A box 1x4, with the inside covered with aluminum foil.
-A regular lamp with a 75w house lamp.
-Shitty soil that i found in my basement.

And that's about it for right now, i plan on getting better soil in the next few days once i get paid.

I'm not looking to go crazy and buy all kinds of crazy things for this project just yet.

What else should i get/improve? If possible please list where i could find the materials and prices.

Hey Mike, hopefully you have some patience because you are gonna have to do a LOT of reading. I suggest you start at the Grow FAQ (http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs/) section of the forum. It has a ton of good threads that can help get you started. Also, the Grow Log (http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-log/) section is a great place to see exactly how people are doing it, in many different styles with different techniques. As for lighting/ventilation info, the Indoor Growing (http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-growing/) section has all that and more.

It doesn't include the lamp so i was thinking about getting a 150W HPS Lamp Mogul Base GE LU150/55 150W HPS Lamp Mogul Base Clear - ProLighting.com (http://www.prolighting.com/lu150-55.html)

I was wondering if that would be a good setup to start with (lighting wise).

The problem is (I think) that the reflector is for a fluorescent bulb and the bulb you posted is an HPS bulb, which I am not sure if that will work with that specific reflector. You should email the seller and find out if it supports HPS bulbs, but I am thinking it probably will not.

Yea i just sent a message to the seller. But is that a decent light setup for a single plant?

Well a 150w HPS would probably be better than a 150w CFL, but it also probably puts out more heat (I have never used an HID lighting system so that's not FOR SURE). If you only want a single plant, check out my CFL log in my signature, it maybe a better way for you to go, but its up to you to make a decision.

Okay yea i read your CFL log today at work. I think i will try that out, it's not that expensive. Where do you get your seeds from? I only have crappy seeds.
