Whats up...
So finally got my strawberry male done and gone with pollen in the freezer. My Blue Mystic beans cracked in less than 6 hours so I am pumped to see what they can do.
Now this will be my 2nd attempt at hydro. First was my strawberry male that did great. Will be using two 5 gallon DWC buckets with Fox Farms nutes. Rockwool plugs in hydroton, 3" netpots, and a UFO style LED inside my homebox tent.
Hopefully some people with a hydro green thumb can keep an eye on these girls with me in case I run into any problems!
Must go drill holes in my buckets now. Will update with pics later tonight!

Here are the pics I promised.
Pic #1 - Shows the future location of my girls. The two 5 gallon buckets will be DWC fem Blue Mystics and the smaller black bucket will be a transplant dank bagseed in soil.
Pic #2 - My LED and home made air scrubber with a 196cfm fan that exhausts outside.
Pic #3 - The bagseed that im going to transplant into the tent. (hopefully its also a lady)
Pic #4 - My cat Jasper inspecting the inside of my bucket and assuring me everything is good to go!

Sweet setup. I want some of that blue with the eyeballs. LOL
They took blue mistic from me and I have not ordered it again. Interested to see how you like it. I will be following your grow.

Nice looking plant. Good job on the homemade carbon scrubber. Do you have a pre filter for your carbon scrubber? It will last longer

Cool, I've seen 2 grows of the Blue Mystic, the variation among the different phenos is incredible. Definitely an interesting plant to grow.
I won't be much help, but I'm pullin' up a chair for this. Been toying with the idea of a DWC/Drip bucket myself, maybe I'll learn something.

Thanks for checking my grow out guys!
Hey Rubberbubbler... Whats a pre filter? lol...
Put my cracked beans in the rockwool this morning at 4am and when I woke up they were already poking up out of the plugs. I hope they turn out good because this is my first time using rockwool and im always nervous using new methods...
Sorry about the crappy quality pics guys... I have to use a cell phone because I lost my usb wire for my camera :(

a pre filter is just a filter that goes over your carbon filter to filter dust or anything that will clog your carbon prematurely.

Oh is it that like big white foam thing i see strapped to the ones they sell for crazy money online?
I dont have a pre-filter... Ive been having to clean the dust and such off of the outside often though. Maybe I should find some of that material... Hmmm.
Do you know what it is called and where I can get it?

Just checked them and I had to help one out. She got the shell off but had that semi clearish crap wrapped tightly on her and her leaves were getting squashed. Had to cut it off to be sure.
I had one before that was doing that... It never was able to get out and I ended up losing it. :(

next grow use Rapid Rooters instead or RW, is alot more forgiving than RW is.
check in the sewing section or Walmart and see if they have that foam you are looking for.

Thanks for the info Tiny... One of the seedlings seems to just keep pushing up out of the RW instead of growing in it.... Getting a tad worried. I ripped some RW off from the side and wrapped it around the bottom of the seedling for support. Hopefully it will get a good hold inside and start growing down into it.

UPDATE: Well the one seedling that I had to help out of the shell is not looking so good.
It hasnt grown at all in the past days and the round leaves are starting to yellow and zero root growth. The other one though is reaching for the sky! So I guess I will only have one Blue Mystic and the bagseed growing. I dont want to have to pop another bean and try again. Need to get this train movin!

Getthis...when the bean is sticking to the leaf...leave it be. It will eventually fall off when the first leaves die off. I have fallen victim to "helping" the seed out...and it lead to disaster for that seedling.
Good luck...cant wait to see more pictures as this log progresses.

I've always found it good to "help out" if it's being stubborn for over a day. Otherwise it will stunt the growth and never catch up with the rest of them.

here's a simple one, who helps take off that stubborn husk out in nature?
NOBODY!!!!
Leave it be and let nature do it's thing. we supply nutes, water, O2, light and alot of tlc but some things that got to do on their own

that stubborn husk causes death in nature. I see nothing wrong with helping a poor bean out if it's having trouble. I had two beans do this to me, the first I let go too long and it ended up deforming the first leave pretty badly. The second husk was firmly wrapped around my second plant so I slit it open and out popped a full leave all crinkled up inside like a party favor or something. I was really shocked as I am certain the plant would have died without my help. I bet most people help their beans when they start to struggle like that.

I too lost a bean from not helping it. I understand the whole nature thing and what not but nature doesnt pay its hard earned money for beans lol.
Maybe after I breed and have a ton of quality beans then I would be more inclined to risk them.
Anyways... I had taproots showing out of the RW this morning so she was inserted into her new 5gallon home. Also transplanted the unknown sex bagseed into a bigger pot after it was showing signs of being rootbound. When I pulled the mass out of the small pot it was almost a solid white root mass. I kept it in there as long as I could to slow its growth. Trying to give the hydro girl time to catch up.
I just hope the LED isnt too strong of red for the little ones... Ive read posts with people saying their seedling just keeled over after being introduced to the heavy red LEDs. It does have a bunch of blue LEDs on it as well so hopefully they do fine. I usually let my plants veg in a box with CFLs until 8"-10" then I send them into the tent with the LED.
Im trying 3" net pots instead of the 2" im used to so I couldnt let them veg in my mini hydro setup that fits in my veg box. I didnt want to resize the holes to 3" just yet... Hope it doesnt bite me in the ass later.
Pic 1 - Shows inside view of the tent. The soil transplant looking very unhappy.

Just need to learn how to use my camera lol...
Anyways I just wanted to do some test shots.
Pic 1 - Closeup of the girl
Pic 2 - Could this be a christmas miracle?! This is the seedling that I was sure was doomed. A good friend of mine suggested breaking up the RW a bit to get oxygen to the root. That was at 4am... now almost 10am and the leaves have doubled in size and it pushed itself out maybe 1/4 to 1/2".
Transplanted one is still angry but seems to be making a full recovery.

Im sitting here looking at this superthrive bottle trying to figure out whats in it lol... Does it make the plant stretch during flower or something?
I will be trying a few drops in my bucket at around 4am. I will be taking some more pics in the next day or two. Trying to find the right ppm still and waiting for the roots to come out of the netpot.
Question... If you somehow put too much superthrive will it kill the girls??
tinytoon
12-09-2009, 02:33 PM
I have not heard of plants OD'ing on Superthrive but I would imagine it is close to everything else as in there is always too much you can give. As for the reason not to use during flower, when I first started using ST I posted on here that I was using it and our long lost Guru of Growing, Stinkyattic, advised me that one of the compounds in ST is not what you want the plants to get during flower. Right this min I cant remember exactly what it was that she said was the compound but I will try to look back and find the name of it for yall. I also have tried to play with ST a lil bit dosage wise, never really went way outside what they recommend and didnt really see much diff between rec dosage and what I was trying (think maybe I tried doubling but been awhile). From all that I have read about ST it seems that it is basically a vitamin boost and helps as a stress reliever. Also suppose to help with root development so using on clones and using when changing from like clone table to your main grow setup is recommended. I'll go see about finding the name of that compound.
Later

St is B vitamins and hormones for good root development.
When your plant goes into flower cycle it turns away from the root system and focuses on Buds. If the ST is still there the plants are confused as to where to put the energy.
Hormones make the world go round.

Whats up everyone...
Its been almost a week since the last update with pics so here goes it.
Ive been slowly adding nutes and increasing the ppm for the young ladies.
They seem to be able to handle a good amount.
The unknown strain in soil on the other hand... is very sensitive to nutes and PH. If the water is anything but 6.8 it shows negative signs. First plant ive dealt with that didnt have a tolerable range of PH. I topped it about 3 days ago and the new tops are coming in. Was my first time trying "topping". Also doing a little LST'ing with it.
On to the Superthrive... Wow. This stuff is great! After basically one day with it the roots on the young ladies have doubled in size and are now coming out of the net pots! Cant wait until they have their feet in the water.

Temps stay between 79-82F with one warm day so far that hit 84F. I miss my old grow space where I had AC and was able to keep it at a solid 72-75F.
Thanks for looking everyone and hope to hear any comments or advice.

Forgot to add that I started to give the hydro a little bit of FF Big Bloom. Trying to follow the FF schedule as best I can. I wouldnt mind trying there solubles but they are a bit expensive for me right now. The names are sweet though! Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, and Cha Ching.
Anybody else use Fox Farms? If so how is the nute schedule they post? Work well for everyone?

Ive been slowly increasing the PPMs to my hydro girls tuning it to their specific needs...
Increased the nutes to Lady#1 to 650ppm today and she pushed out a new node by the end of the day. Lady#2 who was behind by several days and lots of stress has been increased to 350ppm and she is reaching her leaves to the sky.
The soil girl is healthy and I am trying to slow her growth to let the hydro catch up. I have lowered her nutes to 1/4 and continue to LST her. Cant wait to go into 12/12 because she will definitely be the biggest plant ive attempted. Hope her bucket size will last. Not sure of the size but its just a tad smaller than 5 gallon.

Good idea... I was thinking that I need to go buy another 5gallon but I remembered I have a few outside that I used for a soil grow awhile ago. I wish I could find good soil around here.
I will probably transplant it this week sometime.
On another note, I hope my carbon filter is up to the challenge. I checked the ladies this morning and good god the soil one smells super strong. Was so strong that the smell stuck to the inside of my mouth and nose. Had to go use listerine. Nasty girl!
It doesnt smell "bad" but its just so strong its overpowering. Wife said either mangos or peaches. I say mangos that are almost spoiled...

After topping the soil girl about one week ago or so she has really pumped out the side branches and is almost an even canopy with some LST on the main stem. So many secondary tops that I lose count when trying. Even with the very low amount of nutes she refuses to slow down.
She is also showing more and more female preflowers which make me happy. :)
Also due for a res change on the DWC. Hopefully I have time tomorrow morning to do it.

Ok its time for an update...
Lady#1 is finally getting her feet wet and starting to grow good. The roots are getting long with tons of "branching". Might be difficult to pull the netpot out soon from possible root damage so I took what might be one of the last root pics of her. She is also showing light shades of blue in her leaves which makes me smile from ear to ear everytime I look at her. From what I read not every Blue Mystic turns blue so this is great.
Lady#2 still growing on the slow side since her birth. Like I tried to explain before, one of the blades on her 3 pointed leaf is actually fused seamlessly to the big middle blade. Never see anything like it but im sure it was caused by the problems it had getting out of the husk. Looks kind of like a maple leaf.
Bagseed is now dubbed Lady#3 since ive found female preflowers. I have been giving her low amounts of nutes to try and slow her down to let the other ones catch up. After a few days of that she wasnt happy at all so last night I gave her a full dose of nutes in PH corrected water. This morning she again looked great and is still stinky. Still LST and she almost has an even canopy. She is about 1 month veg if I remember correctly... Thats the longest ive ever vegged before since I grew in smaller cabs before I got this tent. She has tons of future bud sites so im thinking she will have a nice yield.
Temps are back down to 70f at night and 74f-76f during the day.
Later today im going to try to find some good soil and transplant Lady#3 into a 5gallon bucket. Also changing the res' for the others.
Pics below.

Might just be her personality. :) Leaf deformities are pretty common. I babysat some BM clones this summer and one of the variations exhibited a wicked twisting and deforming of the leaves, coloration was *quite* blue. My friend keeps a small cut as a decorative plant, it's so freaky looking that it's hard to even tell it's cannabis. :wtf:

So I wake up this morning to 20 some inches of snow and its still coming down hard. Hope my power doesnt go out because my DWC will probably be a goner.
Had some weird slime in Lady#1 bucket so I had to do an uncheduled res change and also changed the airstones because they were covered. Tossed a little h2o2 in after the change for the roots. Everything looks good now. I think there are tiny light leaks from not having enough hydroton in the baskets. Going to presoak some more today.
It is nice though to sit outside and hit the bong... because you can just set it down in the snow and its ice cold for the next puff!

After 30+ inches and 2 1/2 hours of digging. My truck is finally free from its snowed in parking spot...
My girls survived on battery powered air pumps for about 8 hours. Thankfully 6 of those were their normal dark time. Power is back and all three look good.
Lady#1 who had all that slime is now just recovering. Lady#2 is still creeping along growing fine.
Question about RW... Is it bad if it dries out? Been having an issue with Lady#1 and her cube drying out. If I let the water level sink a bit her cube dries and gets a little hard. Seems to stress her out if that happens. Its my first time using the RW starter plugs and am wondering what you guys have to say about it...

Ok so heres an update.
Lady#3 is looking great showing more female preflowers and still stinking up the tent. She continues to grow out instead of up and is almost as wide as the tent. I have been trimming her here and there to allow more light to the developing tops. I also dried one of her leaves and tried it out. Pretty good for a leaf.
Lady#2 is growing but slowly. She is starting to look great with no more lead deformities.
Now on to Lady#1...
She has been giving me problems and now im stuck on what to do so im going to post pics here and start a troubleshooting thread.
Originally she had some weird brownish/clear slime growing in the res. Especially on the air stones. The water was also abnormally cloudy looking so I did a res change and tossed a capful of h2o2. She perked back up after that. Now I checked again and the slime is on her roots now and she is not happy at all. She stopped growing and her tops became real tight almost like they do when they start flowering. She had signs of nute burn before the slime so I backed the ppm down to 550-600 from 750-800. The spots on her leaves seem to keep spreading even after dropping the PPM. Also her leaves feel real dry like shes not getting any water. Using FF grow big and a dose of FF big bloom every other week. How much h2o2 is an appropriate dose?
Hope someone out there can help because I cant afford to lose this medicine. Its for me and my father who is really sick.
Pic 1 - Shows whats going on with her leaves.
Pic 2 - Top view. Looks like when you first flip the lights and the flowering begins to me.

So I did alot of digging around on the net and found what it is.
Its called Brown Algae. H2o2 and any other remedy for "root rot" wont work for this.
It feeds on organic matter and uses up all of the oxygen in the water, suffocating the plants. From what I read res chillers/temp or light tightness does not prevent this.
The only product on any forum or site listed that can combat brown algae is Physan 20.
Ordered mine today but afraid it wont get here in time. Noticed it starting in my other DWC... So this Blue Mystic grow ends up being a loss and learning experience. I still have the soil girl.

Thanks for the replies but I tried using 5ml/G but it just made the slime bigger. Article said something like it feeds on the oxygen from the h2o2. She already died.
Im hoping the other one can last until the Physan 20 gets here. I dont see much of it on it. Im sure it got in there though since I used the same kitchen spoon to stir around the solution in both res.

Ok so I got my Physan-20 but I havent dosed the second DWC yet. She had some slime starting but somehow it seems like she over came it. Its going away on its own with no h2o2. Hopefully I wont have to use the Physan since the sites I read says it shocks your plants alot. She is still growing super slow but I cant figure out why. Maybe a slow growing pheno?? She looks good though... Going to grab another tent for her and flip this other bush in my current tent. Was looking at Grow Lab 40 mother tent. Anybody have experience with grow lab? Says its made by Homebox. Ill post more + pics later.

there is some stuff I've been reading about that is an enzyme that basically feeds on dead stuff and converts into usable, name is hygrozyme or something along that line. It reads like a preventer

Hygorzyme is more a preventer but With the fight on root rot I had to try something. We have a tub with 6 plants, all were developing the rot and roots turning brown but not killing the plants. Gave them just less than half dose on the bottle. After just changing the water once the roots are looking sooo much better and whiter and much new root growth. This will be a regular in the mix from now on. I would take it up more but don't want to shock them if it's working. Yeilds will be much better I'm sure.
Highly recomended for any stage of rot.
Interested to know how the Physan works on the brown algea as we have seen it before and dumped the whole thing trying to clean.

Took some great pics with a 55mm lense but they are way above the max file size... hmm... Ill have to lower the capture size from 12 megapixels to fit on here.
Lady#2 in DWC has almost doubled in size the past couple of days. Very happy about that. Seems she is finally starting to grow. Havent had to use the Physan yet.
Lady#3 in soil is doing good as well. She looks like she is wanting her transplant. The new Growlab tent should be here in a couple days, then she will get repotted and lights flipped...cant wait.
Pic 1 - Finally was able to get a shot of Lady#3's preflowers. Right next to one of her tie downs.
Pic 2 - Can see the bulbous trichs all over her leaves if you zoom in. I think thats what they are called... I think it was Italiano who told me their name.

I have been trimming some leaves off here and there to let light down onto other tops on the soil girl. It is working great! Had to get some crappy Scotts potting soil for her transplant. Also going to mix it with MG perlite that has nutes infused in it which im not too happy about but I couldnt find any other type.
The DWC Blue Mystic is doing good as well. Still havent had to Physan. I positioned some CFLs on her sides and her side growth has exploded over the past day.
I will post pics around 4am when they wake up. Should be just a few more days waiting on the tent until I can flip the big soil girl! Cant wait!

Lady#2 is doing good. I placed CFLs on her side to pull out some growth. Its working good. There are no signs of bad root health. They are stained from nutes and im not going to worry about it if she is growing strong and healthy. She seems to be liking the PPM at around 700-720. Constantly between 5.8 and 6.0. I have been taking a dropper and spraying her upper roots/net pot area with solution every day and the roots seem to like it.

I know she is going to have a great yield from her size. I plan on making butter out of her trim and popcorn buds so I wont be trimming her lower half as much. She puts out big new leaf sets on every top about every 24 hours or less. Her smell is still very strong but im using ona and fresh carbon in my filter.

There was some kinda vapor leeching going on with some tents a whlie ago but thing most companys got there heads out of their arses and have not heard of anyone losing plants to tent syndrome or whatever it was called, sorry cant remember very well. Fell off ladder at work today and just got home from ER a lil while ago. Morphine kinda messing with thought process atm. Also I paid $140 for my Homebox tent on sale and $80 for my Growlab mother tent. Cant remember the site for the homebox but I got the Growlab brant new on ebay from a hydroponics shop.
As for the horror stories... It was called "outgassing" from tents made with PVC. When PVC heats up it releases toxic gasses. They still make tents with that crappy stuff so you have to make sure it lists 100% PVC free material. All of the more expensive makers seem to have switched. Moving from small cabs I built in my closet to the use of tents was the best investment ive made so far in my hobby.

Been busy lately and havent had time to update. Ive been having some issues with my DWC again... It seems when I add FF big bloom to the res it seems to stress it out and the PH rises so fast. It ended up getting some PH damage on the leaves. I gave it 1/2 strength dose. I finally dosed it with h2o2 when the ph problem was getting out of hand. By the time I left in the morning and got home from work it was near 7.0! The h2o2 seemed to fix it. This ph problem made it stop growing...and it already has been gowing so slow! She has been slow from the very start. Must be a bad pheno...
Am I doing something wrong with the big bloom?
Also another question for you guys... Ive heard many different answers so I would like some more feedback. When should I stop pruning leaves when in flower?

So the Scotts soil mixed with perlite is doing much better than I thought it would. She is starting to bud great. Shes not stretching too much. Seems to be about an inch between nodes. She getting stinky and her trichs are starting to show.
Picked up some really nice organic butter that im going to use to make cannabutter. That should be fun. Also picked up a satalite system that connects to my UFO and has 8x individual sockets for CFLs or LED spotlights. Also got a 9w 660nm LED spotlight to fit into one of the sockets. I will be able to point that at the shorter tops for better coverage.

01-26-2010, 06:38 AM
If you keep the water level high when they are young then the bubbles splash the bottom side of the net pot. Thats enough to keep them watered.
No rot. I top the bucket off every 1-2 days. Its more frequent when they get bigger or if your temps are high they will drink more.
Aero seems cool but man it seems complicated and theres alot of construction involved.
As far as choosing your grow method... It all depends on your situation. If you dont have alot of time to devote to checking PH and nute levels then maybe go soil. Unless you can afford equipment that does all that for you.

The LED is super bright and its focused on a small area so wherever you point it theres a serious boost in light. I have mine locked on three shorter tops... hoping it will raise them up closer to the canopy. I pointed it at my face with my eyes closed and it is still super intense light. Pretty cool...
24 hour temp test with the CFLs... After two hours on a warm day today it stayed at 81f with them on. Hoping I can add a 42w and two more 23w CFLs.
If the temp is good then I will lower the lights so the CFLs are closer.
Hopefully the spotlight works good so I can order another.

check it out here.

Also this LED spotlight is working lovely. The side buds and tops I pointed it at are bigger and just loaded with trichs now. Having the flexability to point it anywhere with the socket system is awesome.
