ok, i have always had the problem of getting lights to the lower parts of my plants, tying them solves this problem but halves my growing space, if i was to place the plants on a glass table do you think i could put a 400w underneath the table pointing up to light the foilage otherwise untouched by light, and if so do you think its worth all the trouble?

It could burn the bottom of the leaves . i would go with a high lumen full spectrum floros around the bottom cfl's.

dont do it, plants should only recieve light from the top, that is where the clorophyl is for photosynthesis. also the leaves are more delicate and have larger pores on the bottom of them for circulation. You could damage these cells as they are not protected like the tops. Thats why plants grow leaf side up toward lights.

Also when the leaves on the bottom wilt and turn yellow(usually from lack of light)the plant will take the nutrients from the wilted leaves and feed other areas that need nutes.

Your theory is right but you should lower the light between your plants and use a cool tube to get it close. This will light up the lower branches and provide you the extra bud you are looking for. A 400 w HPS is only really good for a max of 24? of circumference light. Most experts are in agreement that light intensity diminishes exponentially fast.
For example:
A 400-watt MH from 0? to 12? is about the same luminance say 55000
Same light at 24? the luminance is now about 30000

Still good

Same light at 36? the luminance is now about 1200

Worthless

It??s up to you, people who grow pounds on every plant light, top & all sides. With that much light your plants could effectively process Co2 and really benefit from the use.

Lighting the underside of leafs is not recommended, there is a better use for that light.
