View Full Version : BD's CFL peakseed adventure!

Well folks, like stated in my other grow, I have a little winter project to keep me busy. I was inspired by Bodoms DIY rubbermaid, so I figured why not build one for myself! Well I did just that. Initially I had planned on trying to spend as little as possible, but I quickly found out that I didn't have very much around the house. I had to buy;

the rubbermaids(13.50 each, wallymart),
the 3 light bar and y-splitters(8.99 + 1.99ea, home dePOT)
2 23w cfl 4 packs, 2700k & 6500k (~12.00ea, home dePOT)
1 roll aluminum tape (5.99, home dePOT)
2 emergency blankets (.99c each, wallymart)
2 new 120mm cpu fans, Scythe brand, 1 120cfm, 1 63cfm (~15.00ea, local computer store)
a few different sized pots and soil (~15.00 wallymart)
heavy duty timer (20.00, wallymart)
2 pvc 90deg elbows (3.00ea, canadian tire)
AN Sensi bloom 2 part (50.00, local shop)

So total is ~175 bucks, heres what I had.

Duct tape, lots of it
145w used PSU
heavy duty extension cord
1 120mm cpu fan
veg nutes
a random batch of Peakseeds seeds

I germed 1 peakseed bean on aug 31st. I was a little discouraged as it took a good 3 days to pop its tail outta its shell, but a little sandpaper and patience paid off. Here is some pics of the box itself, and the bean on Sept. 13th. The plan is veg till I feel its large enough and LST/FIM.

The first 2 pics are the plant nearly a month later, these pics are from Oct. 1st, This is when I started to LST(notice the yellowed leaves, I had not fed any nutes yet, so it was quickly remedied). The next 3 pics are from the 5th, as you can see, things are bending nicely. I also FIM'med her around the 4th or 5th.

bonedaddy420
10-24-2009, 04:46 AM
The next 2 pics are from Oct. 8th, as you can see, LST has this little lady spreading nicely. The next two pics are from Oct. 18th, and they are of the preflowers!! I transplanted that day, and let veg for another 2 days. I will update this tomorrow when I can snap some pics, 3 days into flowering and its already started to pop up. Anyways, as always comments are appreciated! Hope you all enjoy the show:stoned:

Oh yeah I am running 5 2700k 23w CFLs and 1 6500k for flowering, FYI.

10-24-2009, 08:30 PM
Well here is what she looks like today, 4 days into 12/12. Bushing out really nice, and the multiple tops from where I FIM'med are really starting to shoot out. I put a couple ties on it as it was quite uneven canopy wise, which I figure I'm gonna have to do throughout flowering to maximize my space. The tub she is in is a 19L dish tub, so its right under 5 gals for capacity, and it fits perfect in my box. Enjoy!:stoned:

Thanks for stopping in Headshake! I appreciate the kind words, as for the box, I figure if I were to build another, I would just paint it instead of using the emergency blankets, as I had to cut them to fit the sides, and then after I had done one rubbermaid, found out I needed 2 layers to really hold the light in, so I had to cut again. Twas a P.I.T.A. but a lesson learned!

Anyways I hope you stay tuned, I was pretty dissapointed in my first grow, but I was up for a new challange and I am confident that this will be the start of a "growing" trend for me, lol.

Update! My little darling is doing just fine, temps are great, humidity is great, and shes poppin' pistils and filling out the box! I was a little concerned that the tub might be holding water, but I haven't noticed any ill effects or signs, so I feel pretty good about it. Alright well on with the pics!

I am making the. Exact. Same. Thing. This is an awesome re-assurance. My friend who im building it with says we wont need to move the lights, what is yout experience on the light fixtures?

bonedaddy420
11-05-2009, 01:07 AM
My light fixture is bolted to the rubbermaid with about 1" of space between the rear of the fixture and the top of the box. I just used some wood for support and the extra space so the fan can suck good. I just use stacks of CD's to to prop up the plant so far, so that the intakes don't get blocked, works like a charm, and I can just take a few out everytime she gets to close to the lights.

Also I did get a fixture designed for bathrooms, so it can get "damp", but the sockets are only 60w MAX so don't go out and put 6 42w CFLs in it or else you might start a fire. Anyways man I am pretty impressed with the box so far, I had a bit of a heat problem at first because I had put some nylons over the intake holes to catch dust, etc. Once I took them off its been 70-75* at 18/6, I haven't had the thermometer in there for a bit because I have nowhere to put it where I can read it from the top, but I am pretty sure its about the same. I am thinking of adding another 120mm fan to the inside to get the air moving a bit better but I'm not too worried about it right now.

Good luck man, make sure you post up a grow log when you get around to doin it!

Oh yeah also like I said before, if I were making another one, I would just paint the damn thing, the emergency blankets were a huge pain to put in. Just make sure you use enough coats to make it light proof.

Yeah im just onna grab some square pots, and stack up books. We bought 8 23watt cfl's. I have a mother growing right now, and when this gets built were using 2 for the mother and 6 for all the clones well e cutting. PC fan and carbon filter for airflow, and all the electrical is set up so far. Hopefully finished by the end of this weekend!

bonedaddy420
11-05-2009, 10:29 PM
Check out the explosive growth, damn this thing is starting to get big! Also starting to perfume the air:D:D:D

Also note the before and after her watering, need to keep my lights/space maximized!

One thing I have noticed is the plant has seemed to grow the most around the 2700k lights. Whenever I rotate/lower its always around them that there is the most growth. I don't have another bulb, so I guess next time I will try with 6 2700k instead of 5-1.

OK enough talking more PICTURES!!!

Hey Shove thanks for checking out my log. I cannot believe how much this sucker grows in just 2 days! Seriously vigorous growth constantly, its wonderful, really makes me wish I had a cloning/veg setup so I could have kept her, oh well next time:). Anyways I keep tying the tall parts down the best I can to keep her nice and close to the lights, but I figure another week or so and the stretch should hopefully be over and they can start filling out.:stoned:

Oh yeah I forgot to add that I can't wait till harvest so everyone can see how much LST'ing went into this baby, the main stem is bent up like a freakin pretzel:D:D:D

I need to figure out how to take good macros under florescent light. Anyways, you can clearly see the pink. Looking at the peakseeds page, I am thinking it might be either Northernberry, Northernskunk, or possibly Blueberry, as they are the only strains on the page that have some color to them:rasta: Also today I took off all of my ties, I am thinking I'll have just the right amount of room left to let this baby finish in.

Thanks all, JMORGAN, last time I saw pink pistils was in the summer when one of my outdoor ladies turned out to be a hermie, but I am sure this baby is all girl:D

Hey MonkeyBone, I think I have the max lights for my box, or else temps will quickly become a problem. Also all of my LST/FIM has made this little girl barely over a foot tall(wink wink, nudge nudge), but if she were unrestrained/unfimmed I am fairly sure she would be near 3 feet by now, and also, she completely fills the lower box so there would be no place to put more lights without burning her. I WAS however thinking about trying to max my wattage/lumens by getting 3 42w CFLs and 3 13w CFLs, which would give me just a touch more. Anyways right now it doesn't matter(no cash flow) and I am quite impressed with what can be done with only 6 little light bulbs and some time.

What are the temps staying at?

bonedaddy420
11-25-2009, 03:16 AM
Thanks guys! TBH Doc, I'm not certain what temps are because I don't have anywhere to put my thermometer/hygrometer, but prior to removing it, temps/hum were stable, low to mid 70's with light on, and low to mid 60's with light off, running ~30-35% humidity. I'll try and get it back in there because I am wondering about my humidity now that shes in full flower, I don't want any unexpected rot.

IIIIIIIIIITTTTTTSSSSSSS FRRRIIIIIIIIIIDAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!! Well, after seeing how things are starting to shape up, I am liking what I see/smell. Its got a sugary kinda sweet smell to her, not obnoxious at all, even after being a manhandled a bit. The big main buds are all very compact seeming, and the lower ones are actually starting to thicken, but she is filling up the rubbermaid, so light penetration is at a minimum. Anyways on with the pics!! I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!

Thanks rkbw09, I'm kinda disapointed that the pink is turning orange, but its all good, I'm just really excited to smoke some! But yeah you really should not have any problems with 8 of em. Ok so I checked her yesterday through my top fan and thought I noticed some yellowing leaves, but didn't open the box and actually check her. Well this morning I figure I better look, and this is what I see. I'm not sure if its really anything to worry about this late in the game or not, but would like to hear someones opinion. I have not started flushing yet, I was planning to start the next watering, which should be about Tuesday, which is 8 weeks.

Loafyboy

Hey BD, doesn't look like a problem to me. Cannabis plants generally start to yellow when the flowers are nearing completion, or at least mine always have. Just means there's not long to go now!

Here's a pic of my last grow a week or so before finish, lots of yellow leaves...;)

bonedaddy420
12-15-2009, 01:40 PM
Hey Loafy, that looks like you grew some killer buds dude. Thanks for the reassurance, that's why I didn't hastily rush to the plant problems forum and start a new thread for nothing!

Anyways here she is at 8 weeks! I thought I had noticed a hint of berry on my fingers after touching her, so I snipped off a bit of sugar leaf and popped it in my mouth, guess what...BERRY! Distinct yet subtle, I'm so excited!! I broke my promise to myself too, I snipped off a little bud off one of the secondaries, and threw it in the jar with my current smoke, hopefully it will give them a bit of moisture and dry out the bud at the same time.

After examining the pics in full zoom, it appears that the trichs are mostly clear with some starting to get milky. Hopefully this will work to my advantage as I am planning on chopping her sometime next week, so probably 2 flushing waterings(I did one today) before the chop, and then depending on if I think its worth my time, a 2 stage harvest, but I'm not so sure that it will be necessary. I am going to attempt a bonzai re-veg ala Rusty, and will hopefully move on to cloning and sog. Anyways enough rambling, its time to get freaky(pic 3 makes a great desktop background, pic 4 is the bud I snipped).

awesome grow. Looks like a great success for such a small grow box.

I'd like to ask a few questions on your box, if you don't mind?
Making a growbox myself, and want to use rubbermaid.

whats in the box ontop of the growbox? (cardboard, not power supply)
did you change the lights when flowering started?
Were the sockets in a fixture prior to build or individuals screwed onto wood?
where were the fans located? I think I see one near lights? were the two vents below the plants passive intake/exhaust?

Thanks mgjscdhl, I would have to agree! Of course I don't mind answering some q's.

The box that is ontop of the rubbermaid is basically a chimney for my exhaust fan. It is a chambered box so that light cannot enter my growbox through the fan. Its not taped down so I just pull it off to have a look at my girl.

I did swap the bulbs. For veg I had 4 6500k 23w CFL's, and 2 2700k 23w, and for flowering I have 5 2700k 23w and 1 6500k 23w.

The fixture was bought from home depot, it was all together and was a "bathroom" fixture, so the wiring can handle some moisture. The fixture was then bolted to the top of the box with the wood there so the fan behind (on the top) the fixture could have some room to suck air.

I only run 2 fans, the exhaust is a high flow 120mm computer fan, I believe it was rated for a bit over 100cfm, so it moves plenty of air. It is located on the top of the box behind the lights, as hot air rises. The intakes are 2 90 degree 3 inch PVC elbows, one on each side, right under my canopy, so air is pulled through it, I figured it would help prevent mold. The second fan is another 120mm fan that is hanging in a corner of the box, it is held by some tie wire(NOT THE CORD) and blows air across the canopy. Temps are not a problem.

Hope that helps, and thanks all for stopping in, I'll have another update on the weekend!

Early update, things are looking good, I think. It still appears that trichs are still mostly clear at this point which is a bit concerning, I would really like to chop her early next week but I'm thinking it might be a bit longer than expected. I'm still waiting to smoke the bud I picked off, it was still quite moist so I hang it to dry for a night, might try that later. Anyways, some pics.

Whatever genetics she is, she's made some super-frosty, tasty lookin' meds!

Great stuff, BD! The results ya'll get with the CFLs is really impressive.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks EvilCartman, I'm pretty impressed also! Just wish the buds were bigger(don't we all). Happy holidays to you too!

Hey BoneDaddy, what camera do you use for you super macro shots? And do you use a tripod and timer? Those pics are fantastic man, did you use some lights or something to light up those tasty buds?

I have a Fuji Finepix S2000HD for taking pics of my grow. I don't know if yours is in the same performance range but I certainly want to take pictures like you do!!

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hey MB, I have a Canon Powershot SD1000(older 7.1MP P-n-S), I am a Canon fanboy I suppose, never had one that didn't take good pics. As for how I do it, Just put the camera into manual mode, adjusted my exposure(-1), set my ISO to HIGH, macro enabled(NOT digital macro), and I just point and shoot! It took me a while to figure out the best settings for macros depending on light levels of the room/with flash or without/distance from the buds, but I got her figured out for taking them now, and no I do not use a tripod, timer, or any fancy lights! I'm happy to hear you enjoy the pics though, should have some real good ones in about a week or so:D Happy holidays to you MB, and all the lurkers out there.

thanks for the reply. I'm starting my own grow in a little and looking for any/all small grows and rubbermaid grow boxes. I'm trying to be very careful and exact on how its made before I start the grow.

One last thing: did the fixture have a wattage/volt limitation, and are the lights still within "standards"? I'm guessing it wasn't a factor though since 6x23=138w but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Excellent info and very helpful. Thank you.
Its been one of the best sources of info and i hope both of ours will be a success. First grow... So I'm being extremely careful.

No problem, you should always measure twice, cut once, remember that. The light bar does have a 60w limit on each of the 3 sockets, and each is putting out 46w, so I'm well within the limits. Hope that helped:)

totally right. Just need to make sure before steping into this new venture.
But its not only mesure once... exceeding the wattage is probably dangerous
so thank you for answering a stupid question. Safety is also a priority when you are building things.

So you are not in SUPER macro mode, only in normal macro with the optical zoom...I will try that. But for light issue, I will try plenty of things this holidays, since i'm in vacation until january 3rd 2010!! Beginning tomorrow evening! No money but plenty of time to try everything I want with my camera!

Happy holidays!

Ok so I moved her a few inches closer to the lights the other day, and here she is today, 9 weeks in. Final flush done, now all I have to do is wait. Oh and she has a wicked berry smell, its just crazy, I've never had weed that smelled like this.

edit - didn't see those new posts! Nice work MB, looks like you are getting her figured out. And yeah, safety is paramount, I do not want to accidentaly burn down anything.

Tried to edit my last post and my internet went down! Anyways a smoke report from that bud I picked a few days ago. Well I finally got to it tonight, smoked a bowl over an hour, still feel quite nice an hour and a half later, taste was a bit harsh on the week or so of drying, but had a nice aftertaste and the bud was dense. So I figure with the flush and proper drying and curing I should have some weed on par with anything I can buy around here. I am happy:stoned::stoned::stoned:

The plant is really drying out and there is hardly any leaves left that are not crunchy, which slightly concerns me regarding the re-veg. I decided that I would do a partial harvest, I took off about 1/4 of the plant. It smells awesome and my scissors were sticky when done, as were my fingers. I figure I will take the rest off probably on monday.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holidays.

hey was paying close attention to your grow and then you stoped posting. Why????????
Have you had crop failure or what.
I really hate it when people start a Journal and then just stop, so please keep us up to date.

Hi, Firstly, I love your grow, your log is brilliant too.

Now i'm sorry if you have already said or somebody has already asked...

You have 3 computer fans running if i'm correct, could you tell me which direction you have them pointing? (Is one pointing out of the box and the other two into it?)

Just a bit curious is all, Thanks!

??? Are you asking about my outdoor log? There was nothing to finish, the "bud" i got from it is useless. If you are talking about this thread, I last updated only a few days ago, what more do you want?

From earlier in the thread "I only run 2 fans, the exhaust is a high flow 120mm computer fan, I believe it was rated for a bit over 100cfm, so it moves plenty of air.

Ok folks, I took off the remaining large buds off, and this is what the plant looked like before chopping, hoping they might fill out, but I'm skeptical. I gave a normal strength bloom feeding once I had chopped all her arms off. Also jarred up the buds I took off on xmas, I'd guess its ~2 ounces, judging on how full the jars are(I use a jar for storing my normal smoke, and a half o only fills the jar 1/3), which is awesome because I have as much or more hanging:D:D:D Also, it smells awesome in the jars.

So today I jarred up the rest I chopped, got another 2 jars plus a few extra buds in another jar. I'm pretty happy with the amount, without knowing real weight yet. Everything is quite dry now so I just need to borrow a scale and I'll update with some numbers.

As for the rest of her, it really doesn't look like anything is happening so far. I'm wondering if maybe I should chop the riper buds off or else they might just die off or mold possibly? Anyone got any suggestions?

it will take a little bit for the plant to recover from being chopped. it has to repair the places that you made cuts etc. it should pull out of it just fine. also, you shouldn't have to worry about mold or anything if you don't have high humidity. and they shouldn't die off either as the plant is still living.

i would give them a couple of days to see what happens. worst case scenario is that you chop them in a few days with no additional growth.

Thanks smello, I enjoyed a bud last night, its pretty good, if a little earthy(DUH).

Shake thanks again, you have been a great help:) That was exactly the info I needed.

Anyways here is what is left of her, I'm really not sure whats gonna happen because there is only like 4 tiny fan leaves that are not dried right out. I guess I will wait and see. Oh and I fed her with a bit more of the part b nutes, which contains nitrogen, with the thought it might induce some leafy growth.

Whats up all? So I have been very patient and have held out of smoking before I get some weights, but my update is on the plant. I tried to get a 2 stage harvest, but I must have shocked her to bad when I cut most of her limbs off, because she never recovered. I chopped what was left off today, which is mostly tiny tiny buds, which I am probably gonna try to use to make some hash or oil. I WILL update when I have a weight figure/real smoke report. Oh yeah and a re-veg is not gonna happen on her either, since I had no new leafy growth to support it. She was completely dried out:(

bonedaddy420

So as of right now I have 54.3g of buds jarred and curing, which is a bit under .5g/w, but that is also not including the rest of the plant which was cut and hung up today, which I estimate to be at least another 7g, which would put me right near the .5g/w level. For a first time indoor/CFL grow, I am pretty happy with those numbers. Another smoke report should be upcoming in the next few weeks :)

I too use cfl"s and they are great for indoor small area. I have 2-42 watt/150"s and 4-26 watt/100"s. and my baby is eight weeks flowering and looking awsome, nice big thick buds oh forgot to mention I use f,f, fertilizer and molasses during flowering, wish I had some pics for ya / have to figure-out how to do pics. One plant 3ft, tall with about 60 buds on her, man can"t wait till she"s ready. Peobably another 2 to 3 weeks and she"s all mine : :rasta:
