I've spent the last 9 months building a custom grow room from the ground up with my two roommates. We've tried, failed and perfected every little (and large) imperfection. Our grow setup is exquisite!
-8'x12'x10' Practically air tight room (minus input/output ventilation(when activated))
-(2) 1000W Halide(grow) and 1000W High Pressure Sodium(bloom) Bulbs
(we will use one of each during grow and rotate plants accordingly)
-Vented hoods with Activated Carbon filter on back end... 8" inline duct fan at wall sucking out.
-50lb CO2 tank w/ regulator attached to oscillating fan to distribute
-Separate in wall AC unit
-Isolated watering system including heater, circulation and main hose pumps
-9'x3' bed made of particle board with 1" insulated styrofoam base with (18) 12L potters = 9 plants per light
-Work station, radio and all the other amenities
We are using Fox Farms "Happy Frog" plus mixing in a portion of Perlite and Garden Lime for PH regulation. We are also using the Hesi Soil Nutrient Sytem. We'll see how that works. I've heard good things.
We ordered 20 clones of Skywalker to do our first grow. I've read a lot and it seems to be at home in soil, and not only a high yielder but very potent too! Best of both worlds!
We'll start our little ladies at 18 hours of light & 6 hours of night. Watering 200ml every day (depending on it's needs tho). Don't want to over water!
Tomorrow is the big day! I will include pictures when i update tomorrow after planting! Wish us luck!

Sounds like you have invested plenty of time and effort (not to mention cash!). I'll be following this, sounds great! Looking forward to pics of the grow room setup.

So today was the day! The shop i got our clones from kinda blew it by not having all 20 Skywalker ready like they said they did, so... we went with 17 Skywalker, and 1 of each Platinum Bubba, Old School Og and 5656 OG! 16 SW are in Fox Farms "Happy Frog" with Perlite and Dolomitic Lime (for PH regulation). One SW and the others are in Miracle Grow Potting Soil with Lime and Perlite. Got our water going, using the HESI Soil System! 200ml right after planting. We've decided to use MH one day and HPS the other to maximize potential! Planing on rotating every couple of days. I'll put up more when they start to take!

So i went in this morning to find the two weakest of my girls wilting even more and where ever there were already burn marks, it spread; on all of them! It's not catastrophic, but it did get me searching the net! I kinda of narrowed it down to a few things. First i added a humidifier! We were around 45-55% range, and with the humidifier, we jumped (depending whether the ac kicked in or not) between 55-75%! Then I realized at the distance i had my MH 1000W about the girls, it wasn't reaching the other end of the flower bed adequately (only having one on at a time). I was previously planning to use MH and HPS on alternating days, but there is a big-enough-to-matter difference in the lumen output between the two. So, i went back to using both MH and at the same time. They are about 3' 1/2 above foliage. I had to mess around with the ac and placement of humidifier to get it consistent. Now the only problem i had was the relentless wilting of two Skywalkers! I read up, and used a little common sense, and came to the conclusion that they are in shock. I'm sure it's got to be a big change going from their nice little humi-dome under some fluorescents, to a large room, with (temporarily) low humidity, different lighting, etc etc. So I read a bit about using a clear plastic cup with holes in it over the plant to recreate the environment and humidity. I put them on the worst ones, and it seemed to work on the worst one! The middle, newest, growth, had come back to life! Pretty Excited! So, i will leave them like that overnight, leaving lights off for 6 hrs tonight and on til flower. Let the room get moist and turn everything off. Ac on standby, to catch the lights turning on in a.m. Alright, I'll post again when i see some results!

9 months to copy the swiss how to video?
i would cut the hps off, just run MHand get those in smaller pots for the time being (1gal tall) so they fit under light... looks like they hooked u guys up with clones that barely got rooted(another reason you wont need those pots yet.)
and frog soil is pretty heavy in nutes imo. be easy on the nutes. (hesi is great but if your following that vid there dosing at the start....)
best of luck to you guys and the investment ;)

Well, i came in this morning and the one's i had put under cups, were stable, but one random girl wilted and curled clockwise in on itself! I rotated all plants and decided to put every girl with any sign of problems under a cup. I am not watering today, kind of worried about nute burn and over watering. I'm keeping the humidity as high as possible. Thanks MidnightAK, we definitely did take some tips and construction ideas from the video. Also the only reason we are using Hesi. But I built this room from the ground up. Laid cement, Framing, wiring, insulation, put ac through the wall, doors, drywall, paint, everything man! It's been a real pain in the ass trying to get this going with everyone's jobs and living situation. It's been trial and error and underestimating throughout, but i'm pretty sure our environment is optimal now. We're not just throwing up some lights, ducting and going. And yea, i'm not really happy NOHO 5656, it took 3 weeks to get these and i think, since my order was large, they may have given choice to all other people getting one or two, so mine got picked over. They probably had to cut others in the meantime, and their over all organization skills are ridiculous! They ended up scrambling when i came to pick up (even though they knew i was coming in) and i ended up getting only 17 skywalker, 1 plat bubba, 1 old school og and 1 5656 og. Not very please, but we'll make it work! So anyway, if i need to water tomorrow, i will use pure water. I did cut out the HPS, but with only one MH on, the other end of bed doesn't receive what i would think is enough light. So i've started to use both on, about 3' 1/2 above tops. Is there any reason why my pot size would be affecting my plants? I understand it may not need that much at this point, but why overhaul my situation if it will eventually fill out? I've attached some pics. If anyone can diagnose this or reaffirm my suspicions, i would greatly appreciate it!

hey tm, now that i look at my post it sounded kinda dick lol. (i question a bit much when im stoned.)
it sounds like u had some work cut out for you guys. it came out awesome if i could compare it to the vid and u guys built from scratch(no starting room)! no wonder it took 9 months :D
on the whole idea of potting.
1. smaller pots will be easier to maintain in a smaller area. (+saving on lights is a big plus for me whenever i can)
2. a oversized pot (in your case) with a small plant in it usually causes one to overwater. (water sits in most cases top gets dry u water but plant is actually Wicking water from the bottom) what happens... classic wilt. progressing to lean, or damping off/root rot.
3. smaller pots will help u learn weight technique. i use one hand to move pots around after a while u can tell when the water weights gone. with ten gallon pots u will be able to see a much bigger difference as well once u got it down.
4. all in all its saves money, teaches you about good technique to watering and event repotting skills. good basic gardening.
hope the rooms treating the clones well!

I tried a million things yesterday. I realized we're practically cloning in soil under 1000w mh. Probably not good. Humidity was 35-55. So we made a tent (greenhouse style) to trap moisture in, but it got over 90 degrees. So we scratched that. I'm back to using one light, which seems to be stopping the shriveling and helps keeping humidity up. I will consider the smaller pots. I would do it now, but i'm strapped for cash. But it makes total sense. Thanks! For now, they're in there at 82-84 degrees, 50-65% humidity and one light on about 4 ft from top. I think they are stable enough to let go for a day. They are showing new growth on all tops, i think they might be digesting the bottom large leaves for root growth. Once they establish roots, things might get better? So i'll treat them like the pseudo clones there are. haha I'll throw up some pics later today.

So today, no changes. We've exhausted all of the possible variables that could be wrong and/or changed in our environment (minus getting smaller pots), so we decided to pull the little girls up and see if any hand rooted at all. We ordered these clones on Oct. 1 2009 from NOHO 5656. We waited the 2ish weeks it usually takes to clone a cutting. I checked on them, with no result. No roots showing at all. They then told me to give them a few more days. Never got a call. Then once another week had passed, I called, and they assured me they were rooted and ready to go. When i came in the next day, after telling them i would be in then, they scrambled to find the right one's. They didn't have enough, which is odd, because when i came in the week prior, they were all in one planter bed. We ended up getting stuck with 3 other strains we didn't order. Out of 20, 1 was showing roots, but they insisted they were all ready. So we brought them back, planted. Check all variables (water, lighting, humidity, temp, ventilation, everything.) We're four days in, and everyday brought more problems and more work to try and fix them. We finally took them out of their rock wool cubes to find THEY WERE CUT WRONG, NOT BURIED DEEP ENOUGH IN THE CUBE AND DEFINITELY NOT READY TO GO!!! NO ROOTS, NO GOOD!! Is this what is to be expected? Are these what other dispensaries consider good clones??? Here are pictures, to validate.

I want to here some feed back PLEASE!!!!

That is brutal. I know nothing of buying clones and I'm not too experienced with taking cuts but I have grown clones and I cut them much larger than that. That little cut doesn't look like it was ready for a party cup let alone pails as large as those. Live and learn. You have a couple taking off, right? In a while you'll be able to take your own clones from these.

yea focus on the survivors. it be good to raise your light to max if your gonna continue to root them in that room.
do the survivors at least have a bunch of roots?

Ouch! That sucks big time my friend! I grow indoors in dirt under single 1000 hps. Have always used clones bought from co-ops in Oakland with minimal problems. When first starting out about 5 grows ago, I was lucky enough to have somebody show me what to look for when buying clones. Must have multiple leaves and at least a dozen white (not brown) roots visible. A nice healthy looking set of leaves does not always indicate a healthy, viable clone. Your room and set-up are awesome! You will be sucsessful once you find some reliable clones.

Thanks again for the input AK and MendoBill! So last night, we attempted a re-cloning of the "clones" we found out we had. We weren't expecting much, but we raised the humidity as high as possible, raised the lights around 4' 1/2 from tops and tossed the frankenstein cuttings back into their cubes and watered heavily. I went it this morning to find a few were showing signs of recovery! At least some perkiness. The 5 others that are rooted are doing great! The rest lie in limbo. I'm sure we've lost one, but if we can resurrect the rest of these girls, i'll be content. We ordered two extra clones for safety, and that might turn out to be a great decision! haha We'll thanks again everyone! Here are 4 of the 5 healthy ones! I will post some pictures of the troubled tomorrow morning!

Wow is only thing that I can think to say other then some F bombs! To go thru all the trouble you have had from that damn worthless Club is just wrong. I would get my money back, I say get because I would there would be no this or that him and haw with me when it comes to someone trying to take me for fool. I would tell anyone and everyone that I run into that uses cannabis meds about that place. The positive thing that I think you will get out of this is when things turn around for your grow life, you will respect it all the better and appreciate the clubs that are in your area that actually care about quality and customer service. Oh and I curse their supplier with Mites and Mealy insects that infest their world! :(

It's not a good idea to plant clones directly into soil until whatever medium they were coned in (rockwool, Jiffy pellets, Rapid Rooters, etc.) is showing at least some roots protruding out. I've never bought from a dispensary, but I'd imagine a good one would keep their clones in humidity domes until they're at least showing some kind of signs of root growth. Those obviously weren't. As for the clone that looks scorched, I'd say it did start growing roots but couldn't handle the nutrients in the soil, fertilizers you've used, etc. Those new roots are tender and really don't need much extra in the way of fertilizer until they've established a healthy root system.
After my clones root, I put them in 12oz cups with just a light potting soil and perlite. After they get rootbound, then I transfer into larger pots with all the ammendments, feeding schedules, etc. That's just me, but I rarely have a problem with overfertilizing. Sorry about the grow, but take this as a learning experience. You've got the setup to grow a nice crop, but you want to make sure that you don't end up loving your plants to death. It's easy to do... just about everyone who's ever grown a successful crop has done it at least once.
Better luck next time.

So, we went back to NoHo 5656 and discussed the issue with the owner. Turns out, it WAS a total mix up! We got the shaft, due to one of his employees, but he was a good guy and offered to give us a brand new batch of 20! It's not going to be skywalker, because the whole reason all of this happened, is that they were backed up for a good long time on that strain. So we decided on 10 White Widow, and 10 Master Kush! We do still have 5 living Skywalker in the room, a Platinum bubba, old school og and 5656 og too! So all in all, i'm pleased. After our meeting, we came back to destroy the horrible clones and set up the room with just one light, until we get our new clones in! I will update every couple of days or so until we start back up for real again! Then it's on! Thanks again to everyone for their input and advice!

Only a few more days before our new batch of 10 White Widow and 10 Master Kush are ready! We have four girls that have taken off from the original 20. Two of the skywalker, i'm afraid, might be stunted. If any can knows if the palm-like growth is normal, that would be great.

They wouldn't be in biz all that long treating people like that, and soo many people don't voice their issues they just take their money somewhere else. We thought we might lose them all, but we are happy and lucky to have saved these 5. The new batch of clones should be only a few more days away! I checked them at the store a couple days ago and they looked great, but no protruding roots yet. As for the music, we've just had National Public Radio on, which plays a wide range of the best Classical and Opera, but also they read excerpts from popular books and current events. So, everything is going steady. Did notice we were getting some burns on our 3 little skywalker's in the middle, so we raised the light. I also have to correct myself. We, before today, had our lights at 2' 1/2 from tops, not 3 or so. But now we're back to 3ish. I would like the skywalker girls to catch up to the Old School and Plat Bubba, but i think that's wishful thinking! Went to check our new batch, and they all have one or two roots showing through their rock wool cubes. I will let them stew a few days longer and finally, do this right! I went to check on our new girls at the store today, and they were screaming for me to take them! All of them are healthy looking, well rooted, bitches! So we put them in small cups with holes punched in bottom. Filled bottom and around rock wool with our Fox Farms Happy Frog soil and perlite. Watered lightly immediately after and made sure the room, with both lights on now, will stay at the right environment. Here's the situation...
Since all of our first batch, except for 5, died... and we just got a new full batch of clones... i was thinking...
Our Platinum Bubba and Old School OG are far ahead of the others. 16-19"
The 3 Skywalker are in the middle at 9-11"
And our babies, are, well, babies!
I think that i may leave them all in grow until the babies are maybe 1' 1/2 or so. At that point, the 2 bad asses may be huge, but we do have a lot of head room. Almost 9' limit! We really don't have the option to do rotations, at this time. So it may be our only option... or not. I'd like to hear what you knowledgeable people might know!
Have a great weekend!:smokin:

So, today, our girls were showing a bunch of roots against the inside of the plastic cups! Figured we shouldn't subject them to too much light, so we transplanted all except 5, into the 12L potters from the 1st go-a-round. Luckily, the 5 left over, need a few more days, to establish more roots. We'll get another bag or two of soil and 5 more potters, and toss the rest in soon! It's so nice to see a full room of lovely, healthy ladies! Here's where we're at:

i say trim the tops off the big ones and they will bush out while the others catch up or you can also pull the highest tops down to the level of the lower ones wil also make a bush you can hold them down with string ect tied back to the pot or i just use fishing weights and adjust as needed as the plant grows. topping them will produce more main stalks and be better and you have the time to wait as the others catch up. good luck everything looks great. Just wondering what do they charge for a tiny little baby like those.

Finally! After getting our new batch over a week ago, we decided to give them some much needed rest! We did lose one girl, to an unknown problem in the last two days... but the rest are on the right track! Also, thanks bigd101! We topped our largest two and it is most definitely helping! I've got some pics below to show. I think, as long as it keeps working, we'll keep topping them every 4-7 days until all of our girls are around the same height... then flower! Our Platinum Bubba has gone from shooting up an inch or two a day, to not doing much of anything at all. The Skywalker I topped has surpassed it in height. Is this normal? Possibly dependent on the strain? No biggy tho. We also purchased Dutch Master's Liquid Light and Penetrator to apply to our foliage. It is an expensive additive, but it does provide results! They are very, very perky now! Especially today, after switching their light cycle! Continuing thanks to those who have helped, and everyone... Have a great day! I'll post again in a few days! ENJOY!!! I AM!!!

I think i would pinch the stalk and fold down some of those long ganglely ones that have stretched after a day or two to let them recover from snipping thier heads off. If you pull those down to the same height as the lower growth you should have a nice bush come up. good luck looks like everything is taking off well. if you can lower your lights some, it should make them not stretch so much just be careful for heat if it is comfortable to the back of your hand then it should be ok for the plants.

Thanks again for the tips bigd101! We've been searching all around for different methods to keep our big girls bushy and stout to let the babies catch up. We found a couple different approaches. I think we'll use a combination of both. First, we cut the tops (2-3" down stem) off the old school and tallest skywalker (although, i think the shop may have mislabeled the biggest of our skywalkers... it looks and smells way more like the old school). That has definitely helped fill out the plants tho! We are also snipping the newest growth on all of our girls to promote more outward growth. It's not hurting, so we'll keep doing it. Any input is appreciated! We're just happy to have them all healthy! Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Everything is going well! A little too slow for my taste, but going, none-the-less! We've been pruning our bigger one's, to give the babies a chance to catch up. It's been working nicely! We're using the full dosage of the Hesi growth nutes and PH is 5.8. Soil PH is around 7. Humidity is steady around 40-60% and temperature varies between 79-84F. Maybe another week and bloom!

Well, it's been a few days now, and a lot has happened! We discovered a spider mite problem starting. We tried many different angles, to snuff it out quick. We bought a mini microscope, from Radio Shack (quality), that works surprisingly well. We rubbed the leaves with 70% isopropyl alcohol. That killed all of the live ones... not sure about eggs. Then we grabbed 2 Hotshot Pest Strips. They (as you can see in photo) are placed in-between plants. Those, I believe, are helping. I read a bit about an all-around insecticide, called Sevin. We bought it, and plan to apply right after putting this blog up. The other steps have dramatically affected the mites, but they are some suborn s.o.b's!
We noticed leaf discoloration and the drying up of some parts of our leaves on the Skywalker's. I tried giving them about 400ml/day, and they seem to like it. So, with luck, that's the only problem there!
We put up two wall mount fans. That has made a huge difference with more constant air temp via better circulation. Wish we had those a while ago!
We ran out of the HESI grow nutes, so we picked up Part A&B of the SensiGrow solutions. We're interested to see how that works out. Not exactly joyous at this point with the HESI system. We'll still use it for bloom (cuz we got it), but maybe Sensi will work. Any one used it before?
All of our babies (with the exception of one White Widow we lost weeks ago, and 3 that are stunted right now) are doing great! The Mester Kush were the ones hit by the spider mites, but they are the healthiest! Odd enough, huh? Nothing has made much sense with our first grow, but we've been schooled... pretty throughly thus far!
Here are some pictures:

So... it's been a while! And in that time, things have gotten better and worse! We've been topping all of the girls, and they are reacting very well to that! Much denser bushes, with thicker stalks. On the other hand... we have 4 White Widow that are behind. I think it was over watering. The pots were pretty heavy in comparison to the others. So I've been watering them every other day. They have begun to grow steadily. But the worst problem that has plagued our grow is... SPIDER MITES!!! We caught them early and tried multiple methods to take them out. But we had no result! We got the Hot Shot Pest Strips, tried Sevin and another insecticide i can't remember, made a nicotine spray (which included tobacco, garlic and a sliver of soap)... and now, with those little bastards continuing to have a field day on our plants... I'm pulling out, what i've been told is, The Big Guns! We were recommended Mite-Rid. Surprised i hadn't found it myself. But i'm crossing the fingers at this point. What a pain in the ass, spider mites. Well, if all goes well, and it works... it looks like bloom could be only a few days away! OH AND... the nicotine spray damaged our Master Kush. Only the Master Kush, though. Kid of odd. There's a picture showing it, below.

Hey everybody! Sorry, it's been a long time! We've had a few set backs and many steps forward! We had an interesting holiday experience trying to make sure our ladies would be well taken care of while we were back home visiting. Got past that and had some back tracking to do! We did a major flush, due to nutrient burn and the mites were still sucking the shit out of our plants! What a difference that made! We were also using the Mite-rid formula, and applied twice before flush, a week apart, and then once more after flush... and the mites are evicted! What a pain! Little suckers are worse than roaches. Post apocalyptic scenario: Mites rule the world! Anyway, so we decided to switch over to bloom shortly after our flush! Finally!
I am sorry to say that we will not be updating this grow log as regularly as we had been during the grow. We feel a little more secure not broadcasting that information to the world. But we will dump all of the accumulated pictures and info here after we've harvested! Thanks again to everyone that has offered up the opinions and solid guidance! Here are some pictures!
