I'm wanting to start growing a plant indoors and I have a couple of questions before I start....... 1)How do I tell a female seed from a male / approximately how tall can I expect the plant to grow? I haven't decided on soil or hydro yet. I've already got plenty of information on lighting to help me start.

Maybe you should start in the grow forums and read....then do some more reading...then some more.....The only way to tell between a male seed and female is IF you purchase fem seeds then you know you have females. If they are just regular seeds it's 50/50. Won't know until you actually grow it out and about a month in it will show pre-flowers. You can grow a plant as tall as you want so long as you have the room and lighting for it.... How big are we talking and what size room and how much/type of lights?

As far as seed genetics go and telling whether it's male or female, Italiano is right, you can't tell just by looking at the seed, or even a young sprout.

However, there are several factors that go into determining the sex of a seed. Even if you buy feminized seeds, there is still a chance you can get male genetics. Nature and Nurture both play a large role in determining the sex of a plant. I wouldn't necessarily make the argument that there is a 50/50 shot of getting a female from a non-femmed seed either. There is no way to idealize the probability of gender. Make your environment ideal, that's the best thing you can do to better your chances of showing female genetics.

But please do some serious reading about plants and what they need to grow. It isn't as simple as you might think it is at this point.

A few things for you to focus on:

Growing Medium (Soil vs. hydro)
Strain (sativa vs indica vs autoflower ruderalis)
watering schedule (how to avoid overwatering)
Transplanting (Moving from little pot to big pot over and over again)
Air circulation
Nutrients
Make sure you KNOW your stuff about lights (and lightproofing)

Remember, these are just places for you to START reading! By no means should you stop here.

Take care and good luck

I've been doing a lot of the reading here as well as other places. As I said, I'm becoming familiar with lighting as well as soils. I guess my next couple of questions here are:......what is the main difference in "high" between male and female, I've seen ads for a hydroponic light system that's self contained and for sale. The ads usually show roses or something like pot. Does anyone know anything about this?, and are there any books that anyone knows of that speak specifically about growing pot....not that it's legal or anything:)

Male plants do nothing but pollinate and seed your crop. Females are the buds. The prized possession!

Try google searching Jorge Cervantes Ultimate Grow DVD! That's the most known one I'd think of! There are tons more! You just have to find them!

Yes, it would be recommended to read it, but watching the DVD is quicker and gives you a relative idea on where to start. The book is for the details that come along the way. :D
