View Full Version : HELP!! I accidentaly snapped a seedling's stem in transplant, can it be salvaged?

Hi, was transplanting an 1 1/2 in tall seedling and snapped the stem about a third of the way up the stem, it was a clean snap, and the upper portion is still attached. I transplanted it and put soil around the stem to keep it straight, can I keep it alive?

Sure dude..most times you just need to secure it to a toothpick or bamboo skewer with a plant tie or something (be gentle) and keep it still for a few days not blowing around with a fan on it...I would also give it a light dose of superthrive in the water which can be found at most lowes and some walmarts in the gardening section. It should repair itself and be stronger afterwards..might even end up growing faster than the others in fact. Sometimes people purposely snap the branches of early flowering plants to make then respond with superior yields as a result of hormones being produced by the plant to repair itself and survive as it thinks it's being attacked by an animal or weather elements in the wild basically. Called "Super Cropping" not normally done with seedlings but in most cases they should be fine unless you really smashed it. Good luck! Grow on! :thumbsup:

FUCK YEA, thanks for the info man. I think I'll just leave it and not fuck around with a skewer or the SUPERthrive cause it's banned in MN and it's in the ground straight; and the stem never exceeded a 90o bend so I think I'm good...

Also, would it be a bad idea to give it a light spritz of some dilute hydrogen peroxide to ward off disease?

Don't spray it with anything unless it has a problem...sometimes less is definitely more bro. So I'm guessing you were manhandling the seedling and that's how it got broke hmmm, anyways you have to just let them grow dude.

In a few days that little f*cker should be just fine.

Superthrive would definitely help though in this case..all natural stuff and like night & day in plant strength and structure.

Yeah, I don't know about the superthrive MYSELF, but that's what Wikipedia told me; So I'll have to check around. And "Don't spray it with anything unless it has a problem" seems like a pretty decent advice. My problem wasn't manhandling per se, only a too heavy, light tap on the bottom of the flower pot.

Well, thanks for the help, I've got new hope for the little dude...

good point., actually I think its a hermy, I'm practicing on a bunch of seeds I picked out of some really schwag, I'm waiting to buy seeds till I'm certain I won't kill them.
