Hi Guys,

Well as you can tell from the title...I'm a first time grower!

I plan to be posting as I grow along from the beginning to the end product! :thumbsup:

I hope you guys keep tuned in to my grow log and hopefully can give some sound advice with any problems I encounter along the way!

Which helps not just myself but any other first time growers out there who read this log!

STRAIN

After careful consideration, the strain I decided to grow with was AFGHAN KUSH due to it being Indica dominant and a very hardy strain.

I invested in 3 Afghan Kush seeds (world of seeds landraces collection) from attitude seeds...which came in the post very quickly... 3 days from ordering! they also threw in 2 free seeds of different varieties as part of my purchase!

I stuck 2 of the beans on some (damp)cotton wool and wraped them in (damp) tissue paper and placed them in my boiler cupboard on 8th October...

they sprouted and I placed them in some of B&Q seedling & cutting compost 50-50 with some perlite on saturday the 10th.... I've got them under 2 Cfls at the minute... 1x 20w and 1x 11w....

just for the time being....until I get my 125w (9000 lumen) Veggie Envirolite From basement lighting..... My order arrived today but the envirolite isnt working!! so I'll have to send it back and wait for a replacement! :(

Along with my order I also got some canna coco professional+ which I plan on transfering the plants into once strong roots have been established....oh' and some canna coco A & B....which are the nutes I will be using for this first time grow!

THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT BUYING ANYTHING FROM BASEMENT LIGHTING.COM! :mad:

I am absolutely F**KING FUMING'!! :mad:

I ordered an enviroloite (125w - veg)
E40 cable hanger
canna coco+ and nutes

from basement lighting...... the order arrived 2 days after ordering and everything was fine until I plugged in my envirolite! :(

The bulb wasnt working! it was totally dead!

So I called them up and told them about this! I wasnt sure if it was the actual bulb that wasnt working or if it was the hanger so the guy told me

'no problem' just post the lamp and the hanger back to us and we'll get you a new one sent out right away!

Which I did the very next day!

.......WELL!

Today I recieved a message on my answering machine from the guy (Paul) at basementlighting.com

THE MESSAGE said....exactly...

Hi, this is paul from basement lighting, its regarding the bulb that you have sent back.... I dont know if you've made some kind of mistake?

but its an old bulb you've sent back! its burnt out, the writings all worn on it and the logo's different on it aswell! :mad:

give us a phone back if you find the correct one!

I called him up and spoke to him and he was trying to make out that I had sent back an old bulb intentionally! :mad:

THIS IS MY FIRST TIME GROWING!! I HAVE NO OTHER BULBS TO MIX IT UP WITH!!! :mad:

I explained to him that this was the bulb which he sent me! :mad:

He said 'its all old and worn...did you not notice it when you opened it up?'

AAAAAaaaaarghh!! :mad:

He eventually agreed to post me another one out today!! :mad:

IF HE DOES THIS I WILL BE VERY...VERY SURPRISED...AFTER TRYING TO CON ME LIKE THIS!! :mad:

BUT I WILL WAIT A COUPLE OF DAYS AND LET YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT HAPPENS......

One time I had a similar experience with a site called plantlightinghydroponics with a Sunlight Supply lamp I bought through them that blew a capacitor.

Upon closer examination of the lamp I noticed that the seals had been broken, the screws were marred, and the removable panel was somewhat dented up. I knew I hadn't opened it up but it sure as hell looked like someone else did. I was concerned they weren't going to give me a warranty replacement. The reply I got from the Sunlight Supply people was:

"The Sun System 2 in question is an import product. We randomly pull a few from the masses to perform an in-house quality control. The protective film on the reflector is removed, the tamper-seals are broken, the unit is opened for visual inspection and then it is test-fired. It would appear that you received one of these units. Once the unit has passed this inspection, the tamper seals are replaced, the unit is repackaged and put on the shelf. My guess would be that the tamper seals were not replaced prior to repackaging; a mere oversight. The unit is new and the warranty will be honored. Please coordinate a warranty repair with **** ******."

Instead of replacing the unit they sent me out a new capacitor. No big deal for me, I had other HPS lamps for back up and I don't have a problem doing minor electrical repairs myself. Works good as new now. I just replace the bulbs after just about every second grow.

Considering the condition of that lamp though they must be using apes to perform their "in-house quality control". Thing is, it also originally came to me shipped with a special grow bulb that didn't come standard. And THAT bulb was dead from the git go. I'm thinkin I was actually sent a returned item in the first place.

Crazy sh!t, huh bro?

I understand that some people would try and scam them by sending old goods back but.....

If thats the case and they're being honest...which I sincerely doubt!.... They should have checked the goods before posting them out to me!

I've basically now paid £70 for canna coco & some nutes!

plus the £10 postage I paid to send the broken light + hanger they sent me back!

I feel disgusted!

Don't beat yourself up over it. Looks like you're going to get the rest of your money back now, right? Just try to do a little better reseach on the vendors before you buy next time. Although in all honesty it is ALWAYS a little bit of a crap shoot buying a lot of this stuff. It seems a lot of vendors think that because what we do is considered illegal in many jurisdications that they don't have to show us the same amount of consideration they show they're "regular customers". The reality is though we're a friggen gold mine to those people!

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update.... I 'DID' recieve a new envirolite and hanger this morning as promised by the guy at basement lighting!

I've plugged it in and it's working fine this time round! :thumbsup:

I was just so Angry the other day as I thought I'd been ripped off!

There was a note inside the box saying

''sorry must have been a faulty lamp that got put back on the shelf''

I've emailded the guy and appologised for my telephone manner the other day, but I thought I was being ripped off! and that I understand some 'chancers' would try and scam them by sending old goods back!

I think next time I'll just go to my local hydro shop in person in future!

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since my last post...so heres a quick update!

I'm currently on Day 25 since the seeds hit the soil and I'm pleased to say everything is looking good I think? :)

The girls are looking really healthy... I made some homemade plant pots by cutting a couple of 5L water bottles in half and wraped them with alu foil and re-potted the girls in some canna coco pro+ ( 50-50 with perlite)

I've been watering every day with some very weak nutes...been using Canna coco A & B (2ml A) & (2ml B) to 2Litres of old tap water...

(unsure of P.H as I've still to invest in a Ph kit) although I know this is important.... I've had no problems so far....fingers crossed

The only small teething problem I did have at the start was with the heat coming off of my envirolite bulb! I managed to fry my girls and I thought they were doomed!

but I managed to sort that out by investing in a small 100mm bathroom extractor fan from B&Q (£15) ....which I have fitted so it is blowing into the cabinet and passively venting out of the gaps in the drawers...

Temps are currently sitting at 26 celcius but can be a degree or so higher depending on the ambient temperature of the room.....

I'll try and post some pics up for you guys to see what I mean....

Hey looking really good monny - plants are nice an green and healthy!!

I have an Afghan Kush that I got as a clone from a coop near me and it is just starting to show pistils in flowering.

Looks like we are pretty close in schedule, be interesting to see if there are any similarities.

My plant is weird though its shooting out mostly 3 finger leaves hahah :)

Hi Guys,

Well its day 27 since I first planted the seeds in the soil..... and I was kind of wondering if these ladies are at the correct height for plants that are around this age???

They are both around only 5 to 6 Inches Tall.... with 5 sets of branches...is this normal?

Damn...I hope the seed co have not mixed my seeds up and sent me some dwarf variety? :wtf:

It'd be really cool if one of you guys could let me know....

They are getting around 3500 lumens each I would estimate roughly....

Anyway, I finally invested in a P.H test kit today.....:)

and my purified (boiled & cooled) tap water minus nutes is sitting around 6 to 6.5 PH... I also got some canna PK for when Its time to flower.... as I've said above the girls are on thier 5th set of branches so I decided to top them aswell today and flushed them through with some purified water....the run off was also between 6 and 6.5..... Thats good right? :stoned:

Maaan its been a while!!

Been having some trouble with my internet connection lately so I've been offline for quite some time!

Well as you'll see from the picture my girls are doing GREAT!!

I was hoping to start flowering before now but I'm waiting on my 150w HPS arriving in the mail!

Wow! I cant believe the difference! from those old pics of my girls! My, How they've grown! They've got side shoots spurting everywhere like crazy! :)

After topping a while back they now one girls got 2 main top shoots and the other has 4!

I measured them just now and they're currently around the 40cm mark.... Getting really too big for my veg cab now.... so fingers crossed my HPS comes today or tomorrow.... :thumbsup:

I've had no problems so far! I really cant reccommend Canna Coco highly enough! I'm glad I chose it for my first grow!

The P.H of my water & nutrient solution is around 5.8 - 6.2 I would estimate using my Ph colour chart and temps are sitting steady at 24 celcius just now.... but a chilly 14 degrees with the lights off due to the winter temperatures...

One question I would like to ask of you veteran growers out there is:

Is it too late for these girls to be re-potted for flowering? or will that stress them out too much? and hamper my end quantity of product?

Is it possible to re-pot whilst flowering has commenced?

Its up to you, but I've never seen any damaging effects from repotting within the first month of flowering. As long as its done a little dry(makes it much easier) then there should be no stress.

I've got an experiment I'm gonna try out with the re-potting...

My H.P.S still hasnt arrived yet :( 6 days since I ordered it!

My girls are getting Waaay too big for my veg cab so I've tied some of the branches down on them In the hope that this light gets here soon!

I've got a bit of a 'dilemma' I'm actually going into hospital this afternoon as I'm getting an operation first thing tomorrow morning.... I'll be in until Thursday at least..... And I was hoping my H.P.S would have arrived before now so I could have got everything squared away.....

I was wondering If any of you vets out there could tell if If it would be alright If I put my Girls into total darkness from now untill I get home maybe on Thursday evening?

They have already been on 12/12 under the envirolite for the past 3 days now.... would putting them in total darkness for a few days fuck them up? or hermie them?

I really don't know what to do.... I can't leave them under the envirolite as (a) they are getting too big for it! and (b) My father in Law will be over to let the dog out whilst I'm in hospital and he might hear the fan! :(

Well I'm back home now... and I'm on the road to becoming fit and well again!

Waaaw! that stuff they give you to knock you out into dream land is F**king amazing! :stoned:.... I had a concoction of drugs pumping through my system including ketamine, propofol (the shit that killed Micky J) snd some other stuff beginning with R.... wawaweewa! :)

So I left my girls in total darkness whilst I was away and now I've got them back on 12/12....I sure hope this doesnt hermie them...;)

My HPS still hasnt arrived! although I did get an email from the company telling me It should arrive within the next 2-3 days!

Hey Guys!

Well it's time for an update I think! :)

So my 150w HPS finally arrived! 12 days after ordering and a lot of stress and hassle for me as I thought It was never going to arrive!

I got to work right away and got my 'BUD' box up and running.... I managed to sort out all the kinks and I'm pretty pleased with it! ;)

The heat from the 150w hps was not too intense but to counter any heat issues I've got a small oscillating fan blowing over the tops of the girls and and I invested in another £15 bathroom fan from B&Q which does the job of an inline fan admirably!

(blowing in cool air from the attic for 15mins every half hour)

Temps are sitting at 25 celcius...:thumbsup:

To counter any light leakage I've got a german army poncho hung up to make a good seal and It is totally lightproof.... Its a shame I couldnt get something more reflective and less...well...green...but hey I'm on a budget and it does the job well.

My girls are looking well... a little bit more stretched than I would like but hey...its my first time...

So I was going to re-pot the girls but I wasnt sure of the stress this would create so instead I have cut the bottom away from my homemade (water bottle wrapped in foil) pots and doubled them up on one and placed the other into an ice cread tub..... kinda hard to describe but a picture says a thousand words.....

The only other tweak I have made to my set up is that i've now got a sheet of perspex in my veg box so I can get my new girl (G13 pineapple express) closer to the light.... I realise I accidently deleted the pics I had up of my veg box...so i'll get some more up for anyone who is interested as a.s.a.p.

As always any advice and comments are always welcome!

Both fans are from B&Q my good man...... the clip fan was £3.88...bought it last Autumn.... they sell off all thier summer stock really cheap....

i would also wrap that closet with mylar....it makes a big difference for ur lower buds....i tried just white walls and it doesnt work as well...u should also try to center those lights or ul get some plants leaning over like they been drinking tequila:yippee:

i concur with fleet. i painted the walls of the DIG.. my flower cab and now it is like looking at the sun whereas when the walls were straight ply it was only like that when you looked at the buld (bad idea btw)

I'm pretty much penniless at the minute.... so I cant go out and buy a new light just yet.... the cheapest 125w-150w CFLs to fit an E40 hanger are around £30....which I havent got... :(

So i've hooked up 3 X 20w CFLS and have got them in my veg cab as we speak... It's 'VERY GHETTO' haha! I'll post some pics for you guys to have a laugh at!

But It seems to be doing the job at the minute on my pineapple express! (3600 lumens)

Oh' and after being inspired by fleetspop's inspirational grow I ordered some seedsman white widow from the attitude which arrived yesterday! :thumbsup:

Ok,

Well it's around about Day 22 of Flowering for the Afghan girls... The Girls are doing well and are loving thier new 150w HPS! :)

What a difference I have noticed in the past 2 weeks compared to thier first week under the envirolite!

I think the bud's are still pretty small for a Lady of 3 weeks into flower... But maybe I'm just wishing they were bigger.... :jointsmile:

I will be adding canna PK when the girls get to 5 weeks.... and I've heard GREAT things about the product!... so It'll be interesting to see the results..... :)

you still have to dry and cure . after you harvest... week (X).

and for soil grows check out some greensand its npk is 0-0-3 but its a begining soil additive / first trans plant

I'm pretty pleased with them so far.... :) Afghani seem's to have been a good choice..... pretty hardy strain!

So last night I flushed the girls through with some good old Scottish tap water... (boiled and cooled...around 6.5 PH straight from the tap)

This will be thier last Flush until 2 weeks before harvest...

The G13 Pineapple is still under the Ghetto set-up and will go into flower around about the 26th... Its bottom leaves are slightly yellow, so I think it may be time to feed it some nutes.....

Oh' And I have also trimmed off some of the top leaves on the Afghani so more light can get to the lower buds.... but I have kept the large fan leaves in tact.....

As for curing.... I don't have a grow book... so pretty much all the information on growing I have been getting from this site.... I'm thinking when the time comes to hang the trimmed buds upside down in a cardboard box..... as long as its dry and dark....right?

OK...So... Here are some updated pictures of the Afghan Girls...

They are now at the end of ''4 weeks'' Into flower..... They are looking pretty healthy I think.... The larger fan leaves do have some slight yellowing.... but I've read this is to be expected during flowering... am I right?

After the last Flush... I waited 2 days and then fed with nearly full strength nutes..... CANNA A&B (7ml A & 7ml B to 2 Litres water)

A FEW QUESTIONS FOR THE EXPERTS OUT THERE....

I really don't think these girls have very big Buds at all for plants going into thier 5th week of flowering..... Am I wrong?

Should the buds have really started to fatten up already? or will I notice a massive difference once I have used the Canna PK?

Well... I re-potted the G13 Pineapple in my newly bought 10 Litre plant pots yesterday 60-40 with perlite and started her off on her first day of 12-12....

I will replace the G13 Pineapple in the veg cab with one of my seedsman WHITE WIDOW Ladies...I may start a new thread for the white widow.... so I can see the results from the very first time she bursts through the soil until the chop 12 weeks later.....

i think it will bulk out more.. my plants are bulking up every day and seem to be on fire now that i have the setup kinda dialed in..

looks like those plants are startin to snow.....mine started doing it and it has been the longest wait ive ever had....but that will all end n about 10 - 15 days....good luck on not lookin at them 10 times a day

5 years and i just have learnt now not to check them every 5 seconds lmao
they look good but your pots realy need to be wider next time start them in a 6 litere pot square pot and they can be kept in them throughout, my grows have always started in 6 litres and finished with a high yield in these same pots for five years now and the low light intensity is prob a factor in not bulking up enough to me they look like cfl flowers i know you are using a hps but you can also get them 3 inches from this light i have a 250 and a 600 the 600 needs to be 12 inches but the 250 can be like 5 inches away for optimal results so id get the light about three inches also have you put enough holes in that ice cream tub or the water will go nowhere its needs drainage this is the key and if you cant afford mylar use black and white its the next highest reflective material down from mylar but is way cheaper

The pots they are in now are around about 8 Litres for no 1 afghan and 6ish Litres for no2....

They are pretty close to the light...(I will need to measure)...but they are just close enough that the light does'nt burn the back of my hand....

i think that the closer you can get 'em without burning the better.

Hey keep up the work and putting up pics but a word of advice, next time you're gonna want to trim the LOWER leaves and buds. The point is to trim the small shit that doesnt get much light, not tear off your cola and focus on itty bitty buds down below. Light can go 3 inches from the TOP of your plants =D

I'm thinking when I can get the money together.... I'll sort something out... probably CFL'S..... A lot of the American guys here seem to have those attachments that you can clip multiple CFL'S into..... cant seem to find them in the UK though??? any ideas???

Afghan Girls - 1st day of Canna PK

Well I've just mixed some nutes up for the girls.... I'm starting them on Canna PK today.... Canna A (5ml) & B (5ml) & Canna PK (3ml....full strength)

Once mixed the P.H is around 6.5

hopefully this really fattens them out a bit... fingers crossed... (although they are looking well) and I'll get some new pics up for you guys so we can compare the difference...

I'm also a st timer but i spent £550, nearly $800 on two tents two lights and one extraction system. with the first crop we got back all of the money we out in but i had 7 plants, 5 skunk No, and 4 white rhino. the skunk grew very tall and quickly.
the next crop is cheese, a strain thats very strong. although i only have 5 seeds.
do u think topping these would increase yield? or what.

Its hard to say mate.... as you'll know... there are lots of factors which will increase the amount your plants will yield.... like good ventilation, balanced nutrients, lumen output of your lamps etc.......

but I would think the more leads you can get... and the closer to the light you can get them... as long as you have everything else dialed in.... then your on to a winner.... :thumbsup:

absolutely mate.... If you take the top clean off... all the plants energy will go into the growth of the side shoots.... on my grow here though I (fimmed...I think is the technical term) cut through the main growing tip maybe 75% to produce 4 main leads on one.... and 2 on the other...

Hope that kinda helps you.... Its probably what you already know though.. :thumbsup:

The Afghans have had one dose of canna pk so for.... (had to wait until they dryed out a bit) and will get another dose when they dry out again.....

Its Absolutely Freeeezing here!.... and with the low ambient temperatures... I have managed to get the girls really close to the lamp without burning.... '1' Inch is the closest!

The cola's on my favourite Afghan are looking real nice.... 2 of the cola's are 10cm of dense bud in height and the other 2 are around 8cm.....

On that note.... Has anyone used that black & white stuff... or mylar?... I was wondering If I'd be able to stick it to the door poncho.... or do they crease easily?.... maybe I'll go to the hydro shop and see....

you look on the selector on the camera.. choose the one that looks like a flower.. that will let you get a close pic with out it getting all fuzzy and shit..

Ok Guys... Just a quick update....

The girls so far have had only 2 doses of canna PK...(it's taking them a day or so to soak it up and dry out)... But I can definately see results already!

I'm gonna give them 3 more feeds with the Cann PK before I begin the flush for harvest.

Another Adjustment I have made which I really wish I had done a lonnnnng time ago is that I have tied all the girls stems with picture wire and adjusted them so that they are all around about the same height (had to prop up the pot on no2 bitch with books for same height)....

This way I have now got nearly all the 'leads' around about '1'-'1.5' Inches from the lamp....

Anyway... Here are some pics of the girls (before I tied them) :)

its is supposed to be good for around 5-10 cm.. idk how far in inches.. maybe 3-5?
and i use at about 10 inches and zoom in a bunch.. i only have a cheap 2.1 MP cam with a 3X zoom though so if you have a nicer one you should be able to get nice trich shots.. i think..
keep playing with it and you should have SOME luck i would think..

I was pretty sure my nosy neighbour 'directly' across the street from me might have seen me in at my plants! (never had the blind fully closed! (uh..oh)

Saw him up at the window...looking directly across....on the phone....(no shit!)....(Isure fuckin hope he had a bad signal on his mobile phone!)

then I was picking my girl up from work, and on the way home we passed a police minibus with guys who looked like they were about to go on a drugs raid...just around the corner from my house.. (I was nervous....and definately not just paranoid!)

I sure hope I was just being paranoid and he never saw a thing!

(The police werent for me luckily!)

Light leakage Is only visible from the outside If the door to the cab is open.... I should've shut the curtains ''all the way'' before I opened the door and went in and fucked around with my plants!

Those close-ups are horrible, monny. Just like mine. :(

I've tried to different cameras with tripods, flash/no flash, good side lighting, etc. and my close-ups are frigging useless to read trics at all. I do use the Radio Shack microscope. It's ok but a pain in the ass for me as I have to wear glasses to see what I'm doing and then have to take them off to focus and see through the microscope. I try not to bother too often. I could use something much better. Maybe I'll try my new webcam. Anybody have suggestions for using that?

Oh! nearly forgot.....

I've made some adjustments to the grow room!

I've introduced another 70w HPS to complement the 150w!.... getting around about 21,000 Lumens now.... temps are sitting at a steady 25 celcius...

managed to do this by having the inline fan set on a timer (on 15mins off 15 mins)

oh! and I've managed to tweak my set-up so it's almost silent running now!

what I did was hang the small oscillating clip fan on bungees suspended from the ceiling... and with my inline fan I have it resting on some cloth... to buffer the vibrations....... which was giving me a kind of hummmmm....

and I was paranoid about my neighbours being suspicious..... I'm probably just being over cautious though.... but you can never be too careful!

The only thing I have left to combat is this fuckin smell man! :D

The place reeks!....

i know cost is useally an issue but for the smell you could make a charcoal filter, been a few threads in the past about makeing them, maybe worth haveing a little search:thumbsup:

just look in the DIY link in my sig..
has a couple plans for DIY carbon filters.. and i think they are about $75 end cost.. but that is just a guess really. i have yet to make one

Hi guys,

Its harvest time! So I decided to cut the girls down 3 days early and I now have them hanging to dry....

Total weight wet after the chop was 172g

Plant no1 was 103g & plant no2 was 69g

estimated final weight for no1 is around about 28g dry

And around about 14g for no2 as its quite stemmy.....

The biggest nuggets off of no1 girl were 37g & 35g wet....so i'm thinking these are gonna be good 1/4 oz dry nuggets :thumbsup:

I'll post some pictures up for you guys in around 2 weeks...along with my final weights.... and some photos :rastasmoke:

....the girls seem to be drying out fine, those big buds will take a while longer though I reckon!

They smell 'REALLY STRONG!'... I cant wait to try them!

I guess I'll just have to wait! ...I know its uncommon but.... I dont have a microwave! :)

For those who are interested:

I have no1 girl hanging upside down in an empty chest of drawers...temps are 15-20 celcius

And no2 girl is hanging in a cardboard box in my wardrobe... temps are 20ish degrees

As I decided to smoke some more of those dry little frostie buds, the big ones are nearly ready.... and I'll get you guys some photo's up when the big ones are finally done... its like they've been dipped in crystals....

I've just smoked a good few bowls of those little crystalised frosite buds now and 'I SWEAR TO GOD' I have 'NEVER' been this high before!

This is like a fuckin mild acid trip....It's either that or.....I'm in psychosis!

Seriously, this is the strongest weed I've 'ever' smoked!
