hey guys,.

Well, this is my first shot at trying to get away from paying retail prices for one of mother nature's most fantastic gifts.

I started them out as bagseed seedlings under a small flourescent. I looked around at a few setups and i think mine is going to work fine for now.

So far ive got 4 plants under 2 6500k CFLS 24/7, im planning on replacing them with 100 watt CFLS in a couple weeks.

But any advice, or ideas on how i can make this work better for myself i'd really appreciate it.

get more light ASAP! two bulbs is not nearly enough. i've got 18x 23W, 1700 lumen, 2700K bulbs in a box that size for flowering.

your plants are stretching badly.

agreed. More lights.

I played around with CFLs for months before going with an HPS. What a pain in the ass.

well i have no idea how i'd be able to hook up 18 lights in my box. If i could get 4 big CFLS would that work?

And i noticed that they are tall for their age and leaf size...but would getting the lights closer to them help?

thanks for the advice

yes, you need to keep CFLs within 3-4" for maximum effectivness. yes, higher wattage CFLs would work. you want 5,000 lumens/sq ft. minimum.

not trying to pimp my own stuff, but check out my "vote headshake the king of cardboard" thread.

thats deffinetly a badass setup you made there. Im thinking i want to line my box with that too.

Do you think i should rig up a light setup for CFLS or get an HPS sun system?

Its day 12 for my babies and im thinking getting the light setup right, and some good nutes is crucial at this point.

so i went ahead and bought 2 42w cfls, that are basically 150 regular watts and 2700 lumens each. They are gonna have to work for now.

I took a few pictures of them at days 12 and 13

tell me what you guys think

Hey all great stuff i am about to try to grow my first plant do you think you could explain how you hung the lights in the grow-box please?

tyrone420

i just looped them over the bar at the top of the box.

well i realized that my new cfls are the wrong light spectrum. (thanks to no labeling on the package). So now i setup 4 100W daylight CFLS in my box. The combo is only putting out 6800 lumens to 4 plants, but it seems like it;ll work descent. Especially since at least 2 of the 4 are going to be males and wont be growing the entire time.

Ordering some FF nutes asap.

So my babies are on day 17 now, and im not sure if they're doing as well as i'd hoped.

they are way taller than most peoples plants at 17 days and ive been keeping the lights as close as i can.

heres a few pictures though, im keeping my hopes up that i'll have a couple pretty ladies by the end of next month.

tell me what you guys think

Whatsup fellas :rasta:

Alright so my babies are on day 21, and they're looking pretty nice id have to say. Ive ordered some Fox Farm nutes for them that should be here in a couple days.

I have a soil PH/Moisture/Light tester, but im not sure if it works well or not. If so, then my soil PH is at about 7.5.

Im having a little problem with some of the leaves getting brown spots on the tips. Ive tried using a little ph down but it hasnt helped.

Heres a few pictures so you guys can tell me what you think. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hola my fellow stoners!

I decided to make a few changes to my box today that i think will be for the better.

im still wondering exactly how i'll get my box sealed off enough for me to eliminate odors...im contemplating making a DIY carbon filter...but idk where id put it. febreeze will have to work for now i guess.

the only other thing i need to do is cover up the rest of the inside with foil (i ran out) and get my fan setup partially inside my box and seal it with duct tape to help my airflow.

I realized today that the pot for my runt plant is alot heavier than the other, larger, plants so that leads me to believe that im having drainage problems with it.

Also, as you can see from the pictures, im still having problems with the lower leaves and even some of the main fan leaves starting to brown on the tips...

Nutes should be here tommorow, im crossin my fingers. :stoned:

Let me know what you guys are thinking

Ok, your plants are acutally looking pretty good dude. They are going to quickly OVERGROW your space though and your light is basically just enough to keep them growing decent at this point. You need to buy some "Y" socket splitters and double up on the bulbs. If you goto home depot they have a full spectrum 100 watt equivelant CFL by the other regular ones that has a pretty box, that's the one you want for right now. As far as nutes go, make sure that you only use the FF nutes at like 1/4 strength to begin with..strong stuff and the label directions are almost always too strong even for plants under HPS when they are small and in soil. Being under CFL you need to keep them as short and bushy as humanly possible so at the 4th or 5th set of leaves you need to immediately clip off or "top" the upper growth tip..just snip it right of or pinch and twist gently being careful not to damage the little side shoots that will grow in and replace the original top growth shoot. This will make your plants wider and bushier as opposed to tall and side branches will grow in quite quickly once topped as the plant sends hormonal signals to the lower branch shoots that it's time to fully grow out because it thinks it's been attacked or eaten at the top by a predator, etc. Double up on that light, make sure your temps are no more than 85F max and you should be good...then as soon as they grow in the new top shoots and look like a "Y" at the top and side branches come in and it starts growing really vigorously then it's time to set the cycle to 12/12 and flower.

Thanks alot for the reply.

I figured i'd need more light, but the space might be an issue.

As far as the CFLs go, i bought these 42w (150w equivalent) warm light 2700k bulbs. They are putting out 2700 lumens each. If i just use 4 of those...would it work well enough for flowering? or should i get the socket splitters still?

Id really like to just use the bulbs i have now, i have a couple 75w equivalent cfls that i could use w/ my 100w ones with the y splitters for the rest of veg couldnt I?

tyrone420

So heres a little update on how my adventure is going:

The plants are doing alright i would say. I hooked up the Y splitters and put 4 more 75w (equivalent) CFLS to go along with my other 4 100w (equivalent) CFLS and im liking the setup alot. (pics below)

Leaves are turning yellow and brown so im thinking i still have a PH problem.
I have aquarium ph down, but i dont know how much i should use....anyone know?

Aslo Im having a small problem with my fan setup. i had a square walmart plastic fan and it was quiet. but i wanted to put the fan halfway inside the box and seal it off. So i went out and got a round 8 inch fan from home depot, but its way too powerful even on the lowest setting.

So now i have this huge hole in my box for a fan and too much airflow on my plants. The leaves of the plant in front of the fan get pushed up or down pretty badly.

I also have 3 holes in the back of the box at the top that are for ventilation. But im thinking i want to find somthing i can put over them that lets the air out but not so much odor and light. I just dont know what would work best.

Sorry if im rambling...i just got my first vape and im zonin....:D

and the temp on my gauge cant possibly be right by the way, im guessing its so high because its right next to the lights.

Is there a better place for me to put it? or should i just get a better digital one?

FreeDaHerb

Cool dude, glad to see you added more light..they do need it. I would get the small digital temp gauge with the humidity gauge on it as well..think you can find those at wally world for like $20 pr $30 bucks, very important to know the correct info. Place it at canopy level maybe clipped on one of the pots.

For airflow you can always put the fan pointing out of your box to exhaust the air and it will bring in cool air from your air intake holes provided they are big enough...maybe put an activated charcoal a/c filter from home depot over the front of the fan blowing out of it to help cut down on the smell if you can't obtain a small 4" can fan set-up...that's really what you need ideally and they are not that expensive. I think they have them on hydro wholesale here Hydro Wholesale offers Wholesale Hydroponics, HPS and MH Grow Lights, HydroWholesale hydroponic Supp: 4? Can Filter/TD Series Fan COMBO (http://www.hydrowholesale.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=hydro&Product_Code=0CC2600&Category_Code=FFC)

Can you mount the fan you bought in the back, only facing in a direction in which its not blowin your plants all over and beating them up? Sounds like its got a lot of kick, so pointing it in a corner will still move your plants and give fresh air to them:thumbsup: good luck man they look nice:thumbsup::rasta:

so i decided to stick my original fan inside the box blowing out, and its working great. I kinda had to rig it up with duct tape, but it'll work. The plants have a good breeze now.

Thanks for the replys fellas

Whatsup fellas!

heres a little update on my herb garden.

I decided to start flowering them today, so i changed the light setup to 8 150watt equivalent soft light CFLS and im going to start feeding them FF's Big Bloom when i water them tommorow.

cant wait to see how they like only working half days now.

So far the lower leaves that turned yellow and brown when i was feeding them distilled water are crumbling away pretty much.

my babies look much better from a top view thats for sure.

Let me know what you guys think.:rastasmoke:

It looks like you have everything figured out and running well. your trying to be stealthy with the box but without a direct vent outside your whole room/house will smell of cannabis=-(.

yeah i started realizing this already...but there isnt anyway for me to set up something like that in my place.

cant i get some ventilation tubing w/ an inline fan and a carbon filter to work well enough?

any advice would be highly appreciated!

well im not going to have to worry about transplanting anymore, a couple days ago i was blazed and decided to move my box into a different closet and after 4 hours my plants were dead from the massive amount of heat trapped in there.

oh well...now i have time to get the right equipment i need and some badass seeds as well.

I was looking on hydrowholesale.com at their grow tents and id like to know if anyone has any experience with them. they seem to be a good deal
