Just a quick google search yields such a variation in price for a 400watt hps light setup.

What criteria should one look for when buying his first 400watt hps light? I'm just wondering if the extra price of some is justified or not in a few brands and prices over others. Thanks

Personally; I prefer one that is UL rated/made in USA/Canada. Most magnetic ballasts are UL rated....most digital/electronic ballasts are not UL rated. Ballasts made in China are usually digital and have a history of short bulb life, unless you find a bulb that is compatible.

The 240 volt digital models have a better history, than the 120 volt digital models.

I second the magnetic core design for the ballast. One downer w/ mine is that the cords are fixed in the ballast, they do not unplug, but I get by. Also consider whether or not you want an enclosed AC hood, also pay attention when buying, some come w/ bulbs some don't, which may account for price differences, also keep in mind shipping if buying on line.

I would buy a package deal...bulb, ballast, reflector ...together.

Buying online is usually cheaper than buying locally....BUT!...if something fails in the middle of the grow?...returning something, from online?...is SLOW at best.

You can mitigate your damage greatly by having at least one back up. Yeah, yeah, I know. Takes a little money. But if you're serious about your crop and hard work, you'll maintain a backup available. When a problem does arise, no sweat- you go into replacement mode and go online or whatever it is you need to do.
