Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and have been introduced to the novelty of the strips that are available from the dispensaries in CA.
I'm interested in creating them myself because i'm nowhere near CA and they're pretty costly ($10 per strip)
Does anyone have any ideas of how they do it?
I've been playing with various extraction techniques that I've found on various forums (BHO, cannabutter, and ethanol extraction). I know that BHO is regarded as the most efficient and concentrated method, but for my purposes (I'm working with ~1oz at a time) the yields are too low and the end material is too difficult to work with.
I've come into possession of the material that is used in making the strips (pullulan) and have a recipe for regular strips(will happily share if anyone's interested)
My question is what they think is what do you think is used as the active ingredient? BHO? a concentrated tincture?
The strips claim to have 625mg of THC in them, but if you've seen these strips there's no way the finished product weighs half a gram themselves.
Thanks for your responses. I hope that we can work this out!!

Hello again,
here's a recipe for edible film (w/o thc)
Formulation (for example, in JP Publication No: JP H5-236885)
Ingredient Weight (g)
Pullulan 22.4
Carageenan 1.0
Xanthan gum 0.15
Locust bean gum 0.15
Sorbitol 0.8
Water 71.85
Emulsified mint oil 2.6
Herb extract 0.5
Aspartame 0.3
Citric acid 0.25
Total 100.00
Directions
1. Mix Pullulan, carrageenan, xanthan gum, locust bean gum, sorbitol aspartame and citric acid.
2. Add water with further mixing to provide a gel phase.
3. Mix emulsified mint oil and herb extract with mixing and store overnight (degassing).
4. Pour on a mold such as a glass plate, PET film, etc. and cast to a film of a desired thickness with applicator such as TLC applicator, film applicator, etc. (See photos).
5. The film is dried in an oven at 60-80C until its moisture is about 3-8%.
Since the pullulan, water, mint oil, carageenan and "herb extract" constitute 97.85% of the recipe, I'm thinking that the other ingredients may not be as essential, also because I'm too lazy to find them. I think that for a "prototype" version we can just work with the water, mint oil, and "herb extract"
if you read some posts that have been made about the Medi-Strips

they claim that there's 625mg of THC in them. I just can't see how the math works...unless they're talking about 625mg of starting plant material per dose, which would make more sense.
I really think that a strong tincture using the Master Wu recipe is where I need to start

I just don't have the bulk of plant material needed to make a BHO extraction worth it. If someone out there can argue otherwise, please do.
Thanks for your reply!

I would be amazed if there was more than 1/2 gram of thc there. The problem with working with extract is just try tasting some. Its very very bitter. You would really have to put a lot of sugar or something with it to get a decent taste. I still prefer brownies. With mine I end up with maybe 1/10 of a gram of shake in each one. They taste fine and one is enough to kick you right back for a nice relaxed evening.

I started this whole path with making butter and brownies, but (don't laugh) I'm trying to find ways that are less rich and have less calories. Also I kind of like the challenge of this project since there's zero information on the web about how to make strips.
I recently made some hard candies using a combination of tincture (not the master wu recipe, it was just steeped for 3 weeks in everclear) and about 2g of BHO. They turned out decent.
I did taste the pure extract I made and threw up a little in my mouth afterwards, so I know where you're coming from. I'm thinking that if you can further reduce the tincture then you can concentrate it and then just blast the whole mixture with sweetener/mint oils etc.
Thanks, man

bho is real pure and i use to use it to make canna caps, and needed much less whoa i think i couldve O.D.
the tincture taste better a week or so after its been made, more floral
cooking grade glycerin extractwould probly be best, i use coconut oil for the caps maybe you could just infuse the thc in the mint oil then stick to recipe although it needs to be polyunsaturated i think, a lil research in cooking with cannabis will get u an answer
maybe someone with more cooking experiance will chime in,
isnt there a cooking section

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to check out the glycerin method now!

Just FYI - a lot of people, myself included, have had disappointing results trying to make glycerin tincture. It's a far less efficient solvent than ethanol.

I have a feeling that the oil extraction is one of the most, if not the most foolproof.
any thoughts on how to get this oil to bind to the gelatin?

i belive you should be able to use this emulsified cod liver mint oil in place of the coconut oil and just extract it directly into the mint oil with the same recipe jence the digestive capabilities and contents

Thanks a ton for your suggestions. Isn't mint oil actually alcohol based though? so maybe I do need to make a batch of the green dragon....
*edit* sorry. replied too fast before I saw that you wrote "cod liver" oil.
so now my question is how to I make this oil super concentrated so that 2.6 grams of the oil will be enough so that one dose will be enough?
Has anyone ever performed an experiment to find the saturation point of thc in oil?

from what i understand mint oil is a mixture of cod oil and glycerin with mint flavor

What is BHO and how do I buy the products used to make the Breath Strips?
They are way too expensive.
