Hey I'm new at all of this. Ive only got 3 seeds germinating. Planted one. I dont have any lights or anything. How long do you think it will take for it to sprout? Ive got it under just a normal light for a bit of warmth as its winter here (Australia). What sort of lights should I purchase. Im not really trying to set up a big setup jsut something as a hobby for the mean time. And if all goes well then maybe will look at purchasing a bigger setup. Any advice on what I shud plant the germinated seeds in would be grand. Cheers:rasta::rasta:

Disposable plastic or styrafoam cups work well for sprouting, larger planters keep the soil too damp, you can get root rot, paper towels dry out quickly, killing the new sprout.

Cut small holes on the bottom of the cups for drainage. Put plastic plates or saucers under the cups to collect excess water.

Seedlings love inexpensive 4 foot fluorescent shoplights about a foot away from the soil surface. Cool white is a good inexpensive tube that has good results with cannabis.

You can stay with cool white and a timer to go 12 on 12 off for flowering, you can get better results by switching to inexpensive warm white tubes.

You can get even better results from HID lights, but if you're just seeing if you can do it, there is no need for that expense. Keep a small fan on the area to keep fresh air from causing mold or rot, and to keep the heat from burning leaves that may grow into the tubes and touch them.

Be sure to check out the FAQs for more info on nutrients, even canopy for higher yield, light options and such.

Good luck!

You should on average expect your seeds to sprout anywhere from 3-7 days.
Be patient..be gentle...believe!!!!!!

Was curious if anyone has any photos of what a sprout coming out of the ground should look like..my planted seed is coming out of the ground with the seed still on top is this what should be happening?

Thats normal...leave it be...the seed coating will drop off on its own.

Hey guys what sort of light should I be giving my newly planted seed.
None. Does no good till the seedling breaks-ground and sheds the seed cover.

Room temp is fine, as long as the room is somewhere between 70ish and 85ish.

haha good shit. so woke up this morning and its grown a little. the outer shell has mostly cracked off. still hanging on by a thread. ive moved it into some sun light and hope that she'll start growing.

Im thinking of going to the store today and buy a beginners light system. Any that I should ask them for. Kinda on a budget so not looking for the best light system but somethign that will last and do the job. Also what do I tell them the lights are for??haha

If they ask, tell 'em your wife went 'green', and insists on replacing all the bulbs in your house with CFL's.

buy T12 or T5 flourescent shoplights, or you can go with regular old CFLs. it would be wise to buy fixtures with reflectors on them, but you can make homemade ones out of tin foil or mylar.

Technically, you have to count the distance from the bulb to the reflective surface, then add the distance back to the plant. :(
Basically, reflectivity makes no real difference when the effective light range is around 4 to 6 inches. Definitely not enough of a difference to spend extra cash on Mylar or Panda film and such.

hey guys plant has sprouted up nicely. got a little light set up going now aswell. just curious on when I should plant the sprout into soil. its still in the little root starter thingy. pleet pod or whatever its called. Also should I be giving it 24hour light? Thats what ive been doing. One more thing. How often do I water it. I hear its very easy to drown the plant. Cheers

When the roots start showing through the sides or bottom of the peat puck, ok to transplant.

18 to 24 hours of light, but on a steady schedule. Don't switch back-n-forth. I use 18/6 from seedling to flower, but some don't.

Do not let the seedling dry-out, but don't let it sit in water, either. A happy in-between will do. Don't forget 'em. They dry quickly.

The sprout's looking good so far...

You got a small oscillating fan you can fit in that box? You'll definitely need some air circulation in that box.

I can go and purchase one. That will help it? I hear it helps strengthen the stems??

Mustelid

It will strengthen the stems, keep mold and rot from killing your plants, and also keep them from burning if they should grow up into the tubes.

Alright got a fan set up. Should it only be only while the lights are on?im setting them to 18/6 tonight. also I heard of chopping the stem or something and itll grow back with 2?true or false?if true please let me know what to do.

Cheers for all the help. Its been a life saver!!

you can cut the newest growth once its about 2 weeks old or when its grows its 5th set of leaves.

Mustelid

DO NOT chop of anything. If you have no leaves, the plant is dead. When the plant is way way bigger, you can cut the top off to promote lower growth, but not at seedling stage.

Back off the fan a bit in distance, just to make sure that too much air doesn't burn the leaves.

Keep the fan on 24 hours a day, because mold and rot don't take a break just because the light is off.

ok so I repotted the small plant into a small pot and kinda snapped the tip off the small plant. (2days ago). Also added a bit of fertilizer. In both plants. Came home today after being out and the small plant had topeled over its self. The bigger plant was fine though. I think the small plant is toast. Bigger one is going good.

***Tip of the root. didnt come off. I think maybe repotting has stressed the plant is that possible?

purplekush989

why are you adding fertilizer? the plant is still too young and will be burned by it.

mazman1989
08-05-2009, 08:00 PM
wait till the plant is above 12 inchs then you can top it. cutting it on the top where it keeps make new leaves if you do it will branch out with two top wait a couple of weeks and top those then you will have two new branches on one of the stems. I Dont do this but some people do.

OK so its been a little while since I posted up on here. The plants looks like its going well. 2 leaves look a little burnt tho. Also a couple leaves look like they have yellowish spots on them. Not sure I'm supposed to repot yet? Looks like its doing ok. Here are a few pics. Let me know what you think. Also. Its on 18/6 how long usually will this cycle last for?

Cheers

looks good n healthy, should be a couple more weeks at least until you repot. keep it on 18/6 until you decide to flower, in which case you will have to switch to 12/12. You should probably just repot when you put it into flower.
