Finally decided to do something with my pics i had laying around from the past couple months.. As of now, my babies are 2 wks in flowering, but im going to post the log from the entire project.. :rastasmoke:

I built myself a 3' x 7' x 5' grow closet out of 3/4 plywood, and 2x4s, with a 4' vortex outtake fan, and passive intake. Took about a week to build, seal, paint, and install fans, vents, and one 1000w HPS.

I decided to use a bed for my grow, instead of pots, and i also attached steel casters to the bottom to make it mobile. Several 1/4 holes drilled in the bottom to allow drainage into a drip pan placed underneath.

For this project, i used CocoBlend soil, and im fertilizing with EarthJuice the whole way through, starting with Grow and MicroBlast, ending with Catalyst, Flower, and Meta-K..

Hope you guys enjoy, and feel free to criticize, ask Qs, ect..:D

The top right plant in this shot is the only one showing any purple traits so far. The fan leaf color is really cool, but the node structure is strange. The other plants look very different, but the nodes are stacking nicely.

My method of scrogging, using a common window screen. I left it resting over the top of the canopy during the 6hr dark cycle, and then about half of the light cycle. I found that it worked really well.

I'm pretty sure that having plants in the same pot is not a negative. I personally have not had a soil based grow yet (just started some mothers in soil), most of what I've learned is hydro.

To sum it all up nice looking ladies bro, hope to see some awesome more pics soon :rasta:

Yes, that would apply to pots, mostly because theres not enough room for the roots to thrive..

Here, I am growing in a bed, and i have my plants spaced well enough so thats not really a problem, although the entire bottom is nearly a solid mass of roots :D

Basically, i'm giving them the most root space possible in the confines of a closet operation.

Batch of clones i cut off these babies right before flowering time...

Used Grodan rockwool cubes, sterilized razor, K-L-N cloning solution, and then B1 solution for watering... I got clusters of white hairy roots everywhere at 14 days.. This is my tried-and-true method..

Yeah, its easier to water and control nutes for me.. plus no drips on the floor in between pots when you water.. Usually beds are not mobile enough. I've got my entire bed on casters tho, so i can wheel it out from under the light and work on my plants from any angle, sort of the best of both worlds..

Anyhow, heres pics during dark time..

this set of pics was taken around 15 days in flowering...

the medium you are using is it just a blend of coco/soil? Can you explain how you use the nutes and do you water till runoff? ph?

looks great can't wait to see more buds

The growing medium is Black Gold CocoBlend, its my first time using it, but i was told good things about it from reliable sources.. So far, i really like it. It is basically 60% coco coir and the rest black gold soil. It doesnt drain extremely fast, seems to sort of "sponge up" the water, and then once the roots have absorbed most of it, it dries out rather quickly. Only downside is that i have to really stay on top of my watering schedule... My only other comments on the CocoBlend is that it blows away rather easily when it dries out and your fans are going too strong..

As far as nutes, i began with just EarthJuice Grow, to boost the N, and then i began foliar feeding with EJ Microblast around 3 weeks in to keep micro nutes stable. Also dosed them with EJ Catalyst around that time. I used B1 start solution with chelated iron to fix my iron def. at 5 weeks, and keep the roots healthy. About a week before i changed my lights to 12/12, i began feeding in some EJ Bloom, more Catalyst, and just a little Grow. Now that i am in full flowering, im using mostly Bloom, some Catalyst, Meta-K to keep up the potassium, and i'm also adding Grow every 3rd watering.. I'm following the direction on the bottles, and using medium strength applications on all nutes.

My watering schedule is pretty steadily once every other day. I mix up 5 gallons of water about a day and a half ahead of time, and mix in the nutes, stir it up, and let it sit and stabilize. I've been flushing with plain water every time i add a new nute into the mix, and right after my heavy feedings, just because im paranoid about overdoing it.. :stoned: haha

With a 5 gallon typical watering, i normally have less than one cup of runoff from the drain holes on my bed, and i've got a very cheap PH meter, so i dont really trust it, although it tells my my soil/runoff is around 6.8?

They are around 20 days in flower right now, and looking good! I should have more pics up in a couple days, showing their current state. I do have one concern right now: mold.

I spotted some hairs on the buds that have a tiny brownish tinge on the ends. I will post pics later on, they are sleeping right now, but has anyone seen this before? some buds dont have it, but the ones that do, look as if they'd been singed with a flame.. I just put a digi temp/humidity readout in the closet, so im hoping maybe i just need to raise the light or something.

so YOU mix the coco and soil together.? iv been thinking of runnin #4 peat in the bed and top it with ocean forst.

week 4 i usually start to see some tinge but when i harvested the other day a couple of nugs here and ther had some burn and were kinda crunchy

make sure its not a light leak or other stressor, cause hermies

greenatik

the brown hairs can be an indicator of multiple things. heat stress, hermie (light leaks), but IME, touching and squeezing the buds!

thanks for the info. do you keep a steady PH? if i mix my nutes up ahead of time my ph fluctuates like crazy. do you bubble the mix?

No, sorry i wasnt clearer, i'm buying Black Gold brand soil, but its a new type called CocoBlend, it comes pre-mixed.. But the peat thing sounds interesting too!

Snap, now im worred about light leaks in my little closet.. :( gonna go lightproof more when they wake up now..

Thanks, both of you guys for the info on the brown tinge, i'd never heard this before... Right now im hoping its heat stress, and i'm about to purchase a blower for my intake to try and get temps down... If its light leaks, im going to find out tonight and fix that too..

As far as the PH, i really only have a crappy wand-type meter, and i measure with some "mud" from my water solutuion, and soil, and it seems to always read between 6.5 and 7.0 but i really dont trust the meter at all... Its one of those deals that allegedly tells you: Light Strength, Soil Fertility, PH, Soil Moisture, and with only three metal probes, and no battery..

I dont bubble the water, i just fill a barrel and then measure out the nutes, add them in, stir up real good, let sit overnight, stir again, and commence feeding.

I used lemon juice from fresh lemons to get the PH down a little in the soil when i first started because it was reading above 7.0 on my meter, and i was afraid it was too high.. I'm not very experienced with PH control, but it seems im doing ok so far?

i just saw the black gold stuff today but i just went with #4 cause im behind schedule and i get a bail for 30$ about 7 cft. anything else would cost me double.

i did pretty much the same nute prep as you, then i bought a meter and now i have ph prob :D

got my stuff and now am gonna build my bed. i think im gonna go 2'x 2'1/2 x 10'' and make two, or do you think just a single 4x4. with two i can alternate harvests. have you had any probs with root space

My bed is 4.5ft x 2.5ft and i squeezed 6 in there... The roots are a nice solid mass at the bottom of the bed, but i dont notice any problems from rootlock.

FME, the more space for your roots, the bigger your plant will grow, the less rootspace, the smaller plant you have.. For my space, i have the right amount of roots... for a bigger space, i would want bigger beds/pots tho.

Ok now we are finally caught up to date on this grow log. These pics were taken earlier today, at around day 22 of flowering... Most of them show small examples of the brown tinges on the hairs i mentioned before. I'm pretty sure its heat stress now, my temps when i got home today were in the low 90s  I hope i can install a blower on the intake, and push the temps down to low 80s at least....

I vegged this time for basically 3 months, partly because i was experimenting with scrogging methods, and also in order to cut a nice batch of clones...

The bed i'm using is 12 inches deep, but im only using around 7-8 inches of soil... Next time i'm going to fill the bed right up to the top, and try to go even BIGGER :D

they are only 4 weeks into flowering, and i am already getting VERY impatient...

As you can see, Trichs EVERYWHERE!! :rastasmoke:

Cant get enough magnification with my cam to see milkiness or not tho..

My other main issue right now, is my girl's longhair cat who lives in the same space as my closet project.... Hasn't been an issue until those flowers started getting sticky.. and the warmer weather made her start shedding..... as you can see, theres literally hundreds of little hairs plastering onto the buds....

I've been picking them off with tweezers, and keeping my fans turned up seems to help a little.. Also, since im only growing for personal use.. (heavy personal use) so i guess i dont mind smoking a little kitty fur.. its just annoying to see happening :(

bonedaddy420
07-18-2009, 05:56 AM
something easy you could do is just cut a bit of foam to fit over your intake and that should keep the cat hair on the outside, but you'll have to make sure you clean it to keep the flow.

greenatik
07-19-2009, 12:41 AM
you definitely don't want to be smoking kitty fur. although i'm sure we all have. but since we are growin our own it should be as clean as possible  definitely need to put a filter on the intake. cut down on dust, pests, hair ;)

what size intake and out take are you using in this grow in about a month i am going to start a 1000w 6 plant grow and ill be sure to log it

I have a passive intake, basically just a 10" square of 3/4" holes drilled in the wall of my closet about 3" from the floor, with a heating vent grille on the outside, and a hepa filter on the inside... Filter is to try and control the cat hair and dust getting inside, and it works for the INTAKE.

BUT every time i open the door, the negative pressure inside sucks in cat hair thats floating around in the room.. nothing i can do about that really :( other than stay out of my closet as much as possible and keep it closed.

As soon as this round is over, i am going to add an intake fan to increase my airflow.. i had some heat issues on this first round.. I will update with pics and details on the construction when the time comes..

My outtake is a 6" Vortex fan, pushing about 450 cfm, (Probably a lot less CFMs in actuality because my intake issues) I am stuck with the 6" ducting size because im splitting it into my dryer vent at the wall, but its worked like a charm so far.. :stoned:

TheVegOfEden
07-23-2009, 05:32 AM
Have you tried opening the door at the top to equalize the pressure of the room first before pulling the door all the way open. Or turn the exhaust fan off from the outside b4 going in there.

AssassinDJ

Have you tried opening the door at the top to equalize the pressure of the room first before pulling the door all the way open. Or turn the exhaust fan off from the outside b4 going in there.

Yeah, im trying different things to keep it under control.. I'm turning off the circ fans when im working in there with the door off, and ive been sweeping and wiping down the surrounding area as much as possible too..

I went to the local hydro shop for an intake fan, and was told that the squirrel cage style fans were "outdated" and they no longer carry that type :( I need something to mount to a flat wall easily.. time to scour CraigsList..

My colas look beautiful, I will try to post new pics here soon. Most of my leaves are a bright yellow on the tips and are really N deficient but i'm 6 weeks into flowering, so its nothing but water and molasses from here on in.. I'm so tempted to cut early its almost unbearable :D

Cheers, i'm a little far from Sac tho, probably just use an oversized comp case fan..

Anyhow, Based on my last pic posted, (This is around 6 wks into flowering) Should i be getting ready to harvest?

I was expecting/hoping to go a full 8 wks or more in flowering, but the N is sucking out of all my leaves and the buds are looking nice... cant get enough magnification to see trich color tho..

I'm thinking time to cut soon- i must have a quick-flowering strain.. This is supposedly Urkel, and i have no experience with this strain, so its a bit of guesswork on this first round..

Yeah, my first time indoor in coco, so its all a learning experience... Anyhow, i just finished cutting and wet-trimming everything. I cut at 52 days of flowering.

During the retrofitting of my closet, i found some electrical problems: a splitter for my fans overheated and melted a little bit, so i had to re-wire the fans to a different outlet.. bit worrisome, but glad i found the issue early.

Got everything replaced and tested the loads on my breakers last night, and started round number 2  Got some interesting new clones the other day too.. My selection this time around consists of (2) of the indica dominant purple from my last round, (2) alleged bubblegum kush, and (2) random purple crosses.. should make for a colorful little closet of joy.

Anyhow, not sure of the protocol on making new grow logs, but i'll keep this log going if its not too confusing for people... Heres a pic of Day One, Round Two

Still a runt, but its showing signs of catching up

I made the mistake of buying a gallon of EJ Grow, and apparently they dont sell gallons very often, because this one must have been bottled in the 70's considering how much its dried out. I can hardly get it out of the bottle with a long handled spoon.. its the consistancy of poo...

Anyhow, in dealing with this, i accidentally dosed my plants with too much N and that set them back about a week due to leaf burn :(

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1215/cimg1409h.jpg
This is right after they recovered from the burn, mostly new foilage, as i pruned away all the yellow and curled leaves...

Heres the most current pic:

Tomorrow will be flowering day One :D

Ooh look, even a video, to give you an idea of the amount of air exchange i have going on.

Another update, 4 days into flowering, and WTF!??!

They jumped probably 8 inches in the past week, biggest jump i have ever witnessed indoors.. Gonna have to raise my lights a LOT more this time around..

I am also going to start pruning fan leaves like madness once the flowers kick into full gear... the light penetration is horrible..

I know its been a while since the past few updates, and this round may indeed be my last logged run on here. I'm just too incredibly busy to get on here daily to post photos lately :(

Anyways, thanks to all who are following along so far, im always happy to help people out and answer questions, give advice, ect..

Now on to the plants... :D

The kush has exceeded every other strain in terms of height, bushiness, and stalk size.. The Erkle is trying to keep up, but between those two strains, they have suffocated the tiny random strains that are in the middle..

They are 14 days into flowering now, and really starting to look tasty! I'm really looking forward to comparing yeilds when this is over.. I started with an extra bag of soil, which contributed to the larger plants. I'm also pruning a LOT more of the excess fan leaves this time.. The only other difference is the addition of a little EJ Grow with every other watering- hopefully this will fix the early yellowing i had last time during flowering..

Right now they are getting full strength EJ Flower, with half strength Catalyst, a dash of Meta K, and a dash of EJ Grow every other watering. In addition, i'm flushing with plain water in between each feeding, plus allowing a day of dry time for them..

watering schedule looks like this, day by day:

- feed - dry - plain water - dry - feed - dry - plain water+Grow - dry - feed - dry -

Oh and i have transplanted my clones to dirt containers now.. had some bugs in the roots, but neemed and isolated and we will see how they do..

Thanks for following along !

Hey man,

I'm still watching and appreciating this wonderful Soil Bed grow.

Thanks for putting in the effort you can on updating us!

Keep up the stellar work my friend and i hope you can work around your canopy penetration problem!

Might I suggest reading into supercropping.

Hasta luego amigo,

Hey thats cool, glad to see someones following along..

was starting to think i was logging this for my own records, and thats easier for me to do on paper rather than digital, but its entertaining for me as long as others are benefiting from my effort.. haha :rastasmoke:

I have done supercropping in the past, with outdoor actually, and it can have good results, but right now ive got clones already nearly rootbound for my next round (pics coming soon) so i dont really have the extra month or so it would take to properly supercrop...

My alternative is to go medevial on the lower branches and really open things up for more light and airflow to swell the lows, and keep away mold.

I'm going to get in there this weekend once my light comes on.. i'll have a pics update probably tomorrow.

Hey man, keep them updates coming, this batch has been looking awesome! You'll have had 2 harvests by the time I even get my 1 pathetic outdoor. All the more reason to take mother nature out of the equation!

Yeah, playing god is fun with indoor. :D

This will be quick, but heres a few bud porn pics from yesterday before my light was lit... I cant stop salivating every time i look in my closet.. this has got to be my prize harvest so far..

You can see a little hair on one of the pics... stupid kitty... The problem is much less severe than last round though, the new filter on my intake is doing its job.

Also, no yellowing leaves as of yet either.. My main problem is keeping branches from snapping under the weight for the next month. :stoned:

Thanks to everyone reading... feel free to ask Q's about any step of my method if you're interested in building your own 1k closet.. Also, sorry if im posting too many pictures and slowing down the loading on this thread..

wow, i love the look of ur bud. So colourfull, and I bet will taste amazing. At first I thought ur bed looked a little small but I can see now, wow you are doing a great job. I find its gotta be a do and learn situation, cutting off fan leaves. Some say do it, the plant will focus on the other stuff fine, if u need the space go for it, a few here and there wont hurt. Some dont, the fan leaves are the panels for light directly to that arm or whatnot. I read somewhere someone did a study, they cut the fan leaf off on side of the brang where the bud grew and not the other, where the fan leave was kept it grew substantally better. Now for mine I used cfls and had to trim fan leaves and was told by an older experienced grower to trim away fan leaves as necessary, and I did. I can say, where I left the fan leaves, the buds where 40% bigger. I guess tho for a sog grow ur fucussing on top colas and bud density. Im rambelling. Im jelouse. haha, hopefully this new light I just got will get me some tasties.

Yeah its a small space, only 2ft x 4ft bed, but 7ft tall, minus lights and bed, so i can let them reach up.. This round really got away from me in height..

I have also heard conflicting advice on the fan leaf thing.. i have stripped a lot of them so far, to expose light, and it seems to have no real effect.. they just grow back in abundance.. haha :rastasmoke:

I'm so stoked for this strain of Kush.. bubblegum, cotton candy, or whatever.. it has a super fruity odor while growing... smells JUST like Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum tastes... only way to describe it..

Thanks for stopping in!

Ok guys, my fault. I'm sorry.
