Elcellent information Dutch.
I saw you post it last nite on the other thread, but had no time to comment. It shows the difference between magnetic and electronic ballast to be even less then I thought.
Also thought that the power usage of the electronic ballast was higher then I thought but I took the opportunity to check a Lumatek 600w ballast last night, and was surprised. It was clocking 634 watts total usage to drive a 600w HPS bulb. As eye's example of a 600w magnetic showed a 690 watt use the savings is less the 60 watts.
Between what I know of the 1kw mags I'm using and seeing thier 600w numbers it is pretty safe to say an old fashioned iron core ballast uses abt 15% over bulb wattage. And that most electronic ballasts are not 99% efficent as I once thought.
Considering your older then dirt, not a bad find at all.

Hortilux is probably tired of peeps blaming their lamp failures, on their lamps...instead of fucked up Chinese digital/electronic ballasts!
this could have only happened on the internet

Makes a pretty good stand for magnetic ballasts. The little money saved in efficiency is lost in early lamp failure

So What is Better?
from what I read the new electronic ballasts are more efficient and are better for long bulb life.
I am thinking on getting a Lumatek 400w Digital Ballast to fire up a Mh and HPS(no not at the same time). But if I hear that the old magnetics are better then I wont go digital.
Help me out folks this old dog is tryin a new hobby. and I want to do it right.:)

Lumateks have a shakey history. Some work great, some don't. Keep extra bulbs on hand, when using Lumateks...IMO.

I know a few years ago I heard of a quality and control issue with them but as of late have heard nothing but good on the the new digital ballasts. not just lumatek but others.
If anyone has any knowledgeable input please que in. cant seem to find any input on the the new digital ballasts.
