Hello cannabis.com:

I'm looking to grow a few plants as an experiment. I'm not looking for high yields or top medicinal quality, but just for fun to see if I can grow some weed. I want small compact plants. So here is what I'm thinking:

I can't say that I have done alot of reading, but who does? :P

Space:
- A small 1x1 meter area
- 1x1x <0.5 meter tub for maybe about ~4 plants?
- a tinfoil dome-shaped like structure above the lights for reflection
- a small fan to keep air moving?

Lights:
- 2 standard 40w CFL which is about ~5k lumens?

Soil:
- I'll use regular potting soil from the store
- Water with regular tap water that I'll let sit for a few days
- I'll use small amount of nutrients, maybe the 10:10:10 type for when they start growing bigger

Process:

1. I'll germinate about 20 seeds and plant 10 of the best ones in my small area
2. I'll let them grow until they are about 0.4 m tall with the 16:8 light cycle
3. I'll switch to 12:12 light cycle for flowers
4. Remove the males
5. If there are too many plants in a small area, I'll remove the less healthier ones and plant them outside or something
6. What is flushing?
7. When they look good to me, white-brownish trichomes, I'll take them out and hang them in a closet for about a week
8. I don't feel like curing :(
9. Smoking time? :)

So do you have any advice for me? Do you see any flaws with my plan?
Thanks for reading.

Hello cannabis.com:...

Seems you have been reading some. All except the part where it mentions that this is a medical cannabis site, I guess.

However, were I you, I'd read much more. Especially the Grow Logs. Guranteed there is a grow there somewhere that is akin to what you're looking to do. But reading your post, specifically look at space requirements, equipment needs, ph'ing, veg and flowering nutrients, air intake(s) lightproofing...and about the different needs for veg and flowering. One growbox for the entire grow, or one for veg, one for flower...?
Googling and watching the Marijuana Man's cannabis video's is a great way to learn, too. (Utube has 'em I think)

Once you figure-out what direction you want to go, let us know.

What do you mean this is a medical cannabis site? I see no legality issues with my discussing of cannabis growing and I fully follow the law and am not intending to do anything illegal in my country.

What I'm looking to do is a very cheap care-free experimental cannabis growing. That means I don't want to bother with PH and will just trust that the potting soil will have the acidity as advertised on the bag. I also don't want to bother too much with proper nutrients and only looking to maybe enhance the already balanced soil with 10:10:10. And I'm not planning seperating flowering plants from the veg'ing plants.

If anything goes wrong with the nutrients, I will wash out all of the soil and put in some fresh soil.

1x1 meter space : 5k lumens seems like a pretty good environment for the plants.

I was looking through some logs, but what impressed me the most was this one:

Almost care free and looks somewhat effective.

The way you want to grow my friend sounds like you know nothing about plant stress...

If you intend to shock the hell out of your plants then by all means don't put any effort into it.

Plants have feelings too haha. Trust me, even a little effort is better than none at all

how do you figure 5000 lumens is good for a square meter?

you want a minimum of 5000 lumens per square foot.

I'm not sure I'm following. ysername, are you planning to grow 4 plants in a single big-ass (.5 cubic meter) tub? No individual pots?

Regardless...in giveng a half-assed effort, you'll be lucky to get a half-assed result. Kinda insulting. You don't want to be bothered with attending to the basics like ph and proper nutes...but you do want to bother us with with your desire to get something for nothing. With cannabis, it doesn't work like that. It takes a fair ammount of effort to get more than a couple of leaves on a stick.

However, I would love to see you complete your stated experiment using the approach you've outlined. Could be a lesson to us all.

I say go for it. Of course if it's an epic fail, and it easily could be, you won't have any clue which area of negligence contributed to the downfall, so if you try again you will be forced to do everything as best you can with the budget you have. I don't know about everyone on this board, maybe most of you have done everything right the first time, but for me it usually takes a good ass kicking to persuade me that I am being a fuckup and even then I sometimes find myself thinking that if this factor and that factor hadn't been put upon me... blah blah you get the point.

So, by all means go for it, put as much effort into it as you want, and if you get some decent bud you know that you can get much better and higher quantity smoke. And above all, have fun. I think some people acting like you have to take it all serious and put your elbow grease all the time cause people to not want to get started. Granted, if you totally suck in this endeavor you might not try again, but if you hear a bunch of naysaying you may not try the first time.

The only hard and fast rule in growing is to always know that anyone who knows about it will rat on you if they ever get arrested. Especially if they're related to you. Don't know why that is, maybe jealousy or wanting to not be in jail for ten years.

you might wanna start em in seedling starter soil in solo cups until they're about two weeks old (or when they reach 5 nodes) then transfer em to another pot (i think i used 6 inch diam pots) with regular potting soil and the 10-10-10 nutrients. then when you want to start flower, transfer then to gallon buckets and use nutes that are heavier in phosphorus (the second number, so a good example would be 5-15-5 or some such ratio so that the second number is much higher). Also, you need more lights. when they are wee lasses, a couple of desk lights will do, but once they get bigger you should add more CFLs. once they are about a week old you can put a fan on them. keep in mind that having a fan directly on the plants will not only make their stems stronger, but it will dry out the soil faster, so you might have to water more frequently.

i recommend keeping the plants on a 24/0 light schedule just because its a lot easier and it wont suck up too much juice b/c you are using CFLs.

Thanks for the replies,

I did some more reading and research and I think it might be worth putting a bit more effort. PHing doesn't seem like to much trouble. And I'm planning to maybe have 7 40w CFLs for more light, and have the plants in sperate pots. But since this is an experiment, I'm going to do different things to different plants to see the results. I'm thinking I'll have a few plants growing with proper care and I'll experiment with the rest and maybe have a few shitty plants with very little care.

But I still have a few things I'm unsure of:

If I'm planning of having 7*40w CFLs, would it be better to just buy a HPS? I'm not sure where to get a cheap one and it requires a ballast which maybe a pain in the ass.

What is a good place to buy seeds? I don't think I ever had seeded weed, and I'm not sure how to get schwag in my area for seeds, so I'm going to rely on a internet seed store. How stealth are they? I hope they don't work with the police. And what is a good strain that is compact and easy to grow for a beginner? Is it possible to buy a mix of seeds?

And what is a good cheap store bought soil for growing? Maybe it's worth mixing your own soil?

Virtually, yes that is the way to go, but seeing as your doing an experiment CFL's are perfect as you can adjust them in your canopy so as you can get to the lower bud sites. But if you decide to go with the HPS, just be sure to do a dry run in your grow room so you know what the temperature is like in there during the day and night hours. Trust me, if you get the HPS and then just try and start, you will more than likely run into heating issues, which then leads to stretched plants, then possibly to diseases, bugs, etc. Basically a lot of problems can/may come if conditions aren't met. Anywho, I'm aboard when you get all your materials together and started!

Seed Banks, Good and Bad (http://boards.cannabis.com/basic-growing/155744-seed-banks-good-bad.html)

^^^^ to your question about where to get seeds! Go with an more INDICA dominant plant for the more "compact" plants.

Also, I ordered from PeakSeedBC (http://peakseedsbc.com/seeds.htm) and they sent really stealth. Only $40 a 10 pack and they do send mixed packs. Check it out!!!

:D Good luck and be safe.
