View Full Version : Greenatik's Vertical Cab

I decided to make another thread because the title of my last one was no longer relevant to how I'm growing! Started off scrogging, but for multiple reasons (heat stress, unable to flush, light inefficiency) I decided to build a cabinet and hang the 400 vertical in a cooltube.

I've also switched nutes and coco. The coco I was using (sunleaves) was cheap, inconsistent, and full of salt. I just picked up a bag of Atami bcuzz, and the consistency & texture is superb. Its pre washed, presteamed, and pre buffered with calmag. Stoked to see the improvement

I was using CNS-17 but it seemed to be missing something towards the 2nd half of flower (I think I was suppose to be using CNS Ripe). But, without some kind of schedule, just going off the back of the bottle, I feel lost on how to feed my plants. I am now using Rez's weekly feeding schedule for coco with the GH Flora/koolbloom/floralicious. They look better already and i've only given them one feeding

Right now flowering I have 1 trainwreck bonsai 16 days in, 1 lavender 11 days in, and 1 lavender finishing up 74/85-90 days in.

Whats next:
4-5 Lemon Kush x GDP
1 Leda Uno (maybe, its struggling)
1 ggxbg
1 urkle
couple random bagseed

All these will be put straight into flower as they pop up.

few pictures to get the thread rolling

I'm looking forward to watching your results from the vertical cool tube. I just did that with mine and the temps went down 5 deg pulling that cool air in from down low. I like the idea of the fan blowing in also.

the cooltube was a real lifesaver. I've got an idea whirled up in my head about adding some more light. Going to try and do it 2morrow and post some pics :hippy:

Check them out:

Still checking temps... I can easily exchange the 42 watters for smaller cfls and cut the heat dramatically if needed....

my mature lavender started throwing nanners a couple days ago. I cut it down. I really hope the others didn't get pollinated. fuck. they are doing so well. it will be devastating :(

greenatik
06-25-2009, 09:21 AM
things are going good. still have my fingers crossed that nothing got pollinated. they are a little mg hungry so I added some mag and upped the sweet a little. the clones I had mentioned earlier that I was getting my hands on, well that fell through. the person went and got them from the bay and they were dead within a few days. so I went to the club today and got two strains. Casey Jones and Purple Wreck. Should be in the flower box in 7-10 days! :D

It looks like all of your ladies are enjoying the vertical orientation of your light. You've got some serious bud sites on each of them, and you'll have an incredible selection of meds shortly. Those curing buds are making me drool - talk about bag appeal? They've got it.

Glad to find your new log, and I know it will be a sweet ride!

wowzers,

Honestly, I never want to eff with trainwreck again in my life. I'm a big cougher and I hit this pipe packed with some strong as trainwreck and I almost coughed up a lung, and it was a weeny hit too. Phew, that was a chore to smoke that up! However, the up-side to that episode was the incredible body stone I got after that. Thank God for the Planet Earth TV Series is all I have to say!

I am most envious of the shape and productivity of that bush! WOW!

How long is the flowering cycle for trainwreck? Just curious.

And what kind of light did you say you were using?

greenatik

65-70 days

the light is a 400 w hps hanging vertical with about 200 watts of cfls above ;)

sick chubs! How much did that glass cool tube cost you?

greenatik
06-28-2009, 12:25 AM
for the cooltube you can either go two routes (that I know work).

1. search ebay for 'bake-a-round' and you will find a ton of them for under $20 shipped. that tube (what i'm using) will fit 400 or 600 hps but not CMH.

2. something called a 'hurricane' lamp shade. I think you can find them at your local hobby store and maybe walmart. This is cheaper and will fit larger bulbs but needs extra modification to hook up to the ducting because it is flared at the ends

here's a link to a tutorial from zandor on this site using option 1:
http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs/59042-diy-pyrex-bake-round-cool-tube.html

I didn't follow procedure and kind of just rigged it together with what I had. I took the mounting brackets that come on the socket (they are used to mount the light to the hood) and bent them to wrap around the edges of the tube. I then used foam weather stripping and placed a ring of that around the glass and brackets. Then I put the ducting over it with a clamp and sealed it all together with some aluminum ducting tape and viola

Well... Trainwreck was a bonsai mother that I had been continuously topping since February-ish. Thats why that one is super bushy. Also the vertical lighting and a additive, 'stimul8r,' which produces more nodes and generally less stretch. Lavender was topped about 5 times, trainwreck probably 50+

Also on the lavender pic you can see the middle of the plant - thats light bleaching from the vertical cooltube. I pulled down the nodes to spread out the colas and kind of wrap around the light

A SOG around the light would be the most efficient (yield wise) method for this lighting

cant wait to see how big those lavender buds get!!!

I got a question for ya.....how do you keep your plants soooo straight? I mean usually with Vertical grows, i see the plants leaning toward the light. how often do you have to rotate? but anyways awesome grow brotha.....the TW looks amazing....keep it up and stay safe.....see ya soon!

Well my only guess would be that they have no room to lean. Its pretty tight in there and the light is within 5 inches of the closest buds. I don't rotate either, I read that its not a good idea because the plants like being moved as little as possible. I just train the nodes to try and expose as much of the plant as possible. Thanks for stopping in killa!

My trainwreck clone after two weeks decided to die. Poor parenting... so I'll have to try and revegg the bonsai because I don't want to lose the cut. Probably wouldn't be too hard to find another one around here though.

no the casey isn't flowerin yet. just topped both of them to get cuts. soon as they recover from the top and start growin i'll be throwin them into flower. they stink already in veg! the stretch reminds me of trainwreck, probably a lil more

super silver or ssh? why not keep both? do you know the flowerin time of casey? did you start casey from seed or clone?

Super silver haze she is. i got my casey from oaksterdam about 2 months ago with 707 headband and purple erkle (not oakster) which idont really care for buzz wise but it works wonders for nausea so i grow her out and take as needed. and some vaniluna from seed which im searching for a mother and some flo and trin beans waiting to crack but im in no hurry with those. i wanted to do the flo outdoors so prb next year.

but my long standing mother and still fave goes no where hahaha. so im just testing different strains i like, lookin for keepers. if casey gets popular ill probly drop her cause then they come round all the time. like erkle

Dunno what kind of PW it is. I honestly don't even know if its really PW. I got it from a dispensary in norcal and the cup it was in had two labels on it. The guy there said its either Purple Wreck or Nightshade for sure. But the leaves look real indica like and looks identical to my trainwreck as far as stretch goes. I have read that purple wreck is a low yielder but the smoke is top notch. Got any pics of your pw? thanks for poppin in killa

lucky.... ssh... :stoned: thanks for the casey pic. suprising your erkle doesn't do it for you in the buzz section. i've got a grip of urkle seeds and there seems to be 3 diff phenotypes. one skunky/fuely real orange pheno, one grapey purple pheno, and one I call the strawberry pheno. smells like chocolate covered strawberries during flowering then goes real grapey after the cure. the skunky/fuel pheno is super strong. but like you probably I enjoy the sativa buzz; the couchlock purple has gotten quite boring (being in cali)

just picked up advanced nutrients 3 part (micro, bloom, grow) and plan on trying it on a couple plants for comparison against the gh flora 3 part. not that i'm complaining at all, the flora is working great. but it is a bit salty and I think the advanced might come out ahead. the new plants, (lkxgdp, casey jones, purple wreck) will be getting the advanced and the older plants will continue with the GH

edit... also picked up snowstorm ultra, only 11 bucks, so i'm going to give it a whirl see if it frosts them up nice. a real low dosage though

what do yall think?

phatsesh101
07-09-2009, 10:38 PM
i was wondering about advanced after the thc expo they had a nice presentation about overnuting and stuff.

let us know ho the ssu turns out, i thought it was a strain lol

greenatik
07-09-2009, 10:43 PM
:D would be a good name for a strain huh?

phatsesh101
07-10-2009, 12:07 AM
i thought it was snow cap and mk ultra or something

greenatik
07-12-2009, 12:24 AM
so far no adverse effects from the snowstorm ultra.. or noticeable improvements with the advanced 3 part. BUT, I calculated everything out and...

[gh flora] - 6ml micro / 9ml bloom

N-P-K-Mg
91 â?? 60 â?? 107 - 41

[advanced] - 6ml micro / 10 ml bloom

N-P-K-Mg
90 â?? 52 â?? 92 - 36

So not MUCH of a difference but I like the advanced numbers better for less P and K. Lighter feeds on the off weeks and better ratios when I add in the supplements (koolbloom/snowstorm/sweet)

.......................................

On another note, the Lemon Kush x GDP... well I find out today from my buddy that he was mistaken and its not lemon kush, its supergirl (?) x GDP. Usually I'd be pretty pissed cuz I like to know what I'm growin but the plants are really lookin good and very consistent as well. It must of stretched 3 inches over night :D

phatsesh101
07-12-2009, 01:01 AM
the lower #s was part of their presentation saying that other nutes overfert it seemed to be theri selling point.

i was thinking of using them if or when i run hydro

greenatik
07-12-2009, 02:33 AM
it would make sense cause I thought the #'s were a little high with the flora especially for coco. here's a quote from the grower behind H3ad's seeds (caseyjones)

"The target numbers I shoot for are 100 - 100 - 200 - 60 for N-P-K-Mg, normally... but for the coco I think the lower P and K are needed...
Also, although a wide range of ratios in the K-Ca-Mg relationship will provide optimum growth, it is generally accepted that there should be a bit more K than Ca, and a bit more Ca than Mg..."

advanced is more in tune with this statement so maybe I might see some improvement

they seem cleaner too, the micro is less gunky. also not really more expensive than the flora series so i'd give em a try if you go hydro

so things are going well. had a few incidents in the growbox... and they both happened at the same time.. my oscillating fan went out and the older supergirlxgdp fell into the light somehow. It was just cooking on the cooltube. but I cut off the leaves and I think everything will be alright. Purple wreck is going to be some fire. so sticky already.. im scared:stoned: casey jones has ran out of room. i've been supercropping it daily...

I harvested trainwreck at day 58 I just wanted to give the others more room. but it can be harvested anywhere from 43-65. its almost dry 1 more day, current weight is 59.6 gr. all stems clipped out and manicured pretty well. i'm happy, it didnt have the greatest start with half its nodes missing so it could of been more

so somehow... my stopper on my timer popped itself out of place and my plants missed 7 hours of their dark cycle :mad: I don't get it. the timer is behind my cabinet away from everything so it had to have popped out by itself. I hope it doesn't mess em up too much.

well i've been picking nanners daily. mainly from casey jones/purple wreck. but the last couple days I havent seen any new nanners. that purple wreck must hold a record for low yield or something:wtf: should be potent but I couldnt grow enough plants to make it last me over. thinking about scrapping all the plants in 10 or so days when the supergirl x gdp and lavender finish. i'll just make treats/tincture out of the early stuff.

I just cut down godsgiftxbluegoo. not much of a yield either, but not bad for throwing it into flower as SOON as it rooted. no vegg whatsoever

decided not to cut them all down just yet. going to setup a drip system tomorrow to 'get my feet wet' before the next run. plus, I dont wanna miss out on the yield to come. so this was a decision I made today and I had been flushing them for 3 or 4 days already, hence why they are a bit yellow

SGxGDP is a keeper plant for sure. best yielding plant i've grown to date (from the looks of it) because of the vert light and the topheavy-ness it has leaned too far towards the light and fell onto the cooltube. both plants haha. ive staked up the buds now

maybe one day i'll harvest enough to do some tradin ;). been wanting to go to clearlake though for a while now.

casey smells good. not nearly as strong as I thought it would, judging by its smell in veg. but a nice unique musk/skunk to it. im about 25 days from harvest so just behind you. we will have to continue to compare :D

thanks jake! surprisingly enough I have barely taken advantage of all that's around me. i've only been to a dispensary maybe 6 or so times - to get clones and a super dank eighth for a day trip or something. I've got to check out some of the stuff around me soon though

In this tiny space, is your vertical set-up more conducive to growth then an overhead set-up? I am aware of the benefits of going vertical but i have never seen it in a small space.
I am working on a cab (4T x 4L x 3.5w) and have a Fresca sol 600 w water jacket cooled light going in there. Have you ever thought of using the water cooled lights on a vertical grow?

I've always been intimidated by water cooled lights......I hate fire if something were to magically go wrong...Then again, I don't claim to know a lot about water cooled lights. Some detailed info would be sweet. Maybe that would suppress my fear of that technology.

Also

Fresca Sol Water Cooled Light (http://www.growlightexpress.com/water-cooled-lights-8/fresca-sol-water-cooled-light-451.html)

I have went with the Fresca Sol. The makers have perfected these lights and would not make them available for consumers unless they were safe. No heat, no fans (no noise) better CO2 use, and can be put 5 inches from the plants.

eh, if you already have it then go for it. i've read that they work well. but if i were to put a 600 in my box I would just run the cooltube with separate ventilation. I can touch my cooltube and its warm to the touch nowhere near hot. I have my plants within 5 inches as well.

And as far as vertical being conducive to growth.. overall, probably not because theres a lot of lumens / sq foot in such a small area. but what vertical IS going to do is get you tighter nodes and reduce stretch = bigger buds.

all I know is that I am smashing my previous yields :rasta:

No doubt that they are cool to the touch. I was thinking that the water jackets would reduce energy and noise taking away the fan. Using CO2 and Gravity?

greenatik
08-19-2009, 06:46 PM
yup no doubt it would save energy I was just on a budget and went with the 20$ tube option.

are you asking me if I use co2 or gravity? nope, neither, just my beloved coco.:) I do use koolbloom 3 weeks out of the flowering cycle for a small pk shot though. thinking about co2 on my next project

greenatik
08-19-2009, 06:53 PM
after reading that link you posted, don't you think two glass tubes and water running around the light would filter more lumens? also, can it easily be done vertically ?

do the plants get watered every day in flowering or every other day??

bluntpasser, thanks for wanting to wander into the great world of coco! I'll try and answer your questions and more...

the atami bcuzz is the best coco I have used thus far. either that or canna bagged coco would be what I'd go with. bricked coco is really full of salt and takes a lot of preparation. the bcuzz is lightly fertilized so the seedlings don't need anything for a couple days above ground.

but remember soil and coco are nothing alike. I water every day full strength until runoff and flush once a week(nuting immediately after). its best to treat it like hydro and keep the coco moist, not super wet, and NEVER dry (which is why I decided to set up a drip, once a day wasn't cutting it in my small pots). I would advise you not to attempt coco if you're not willing to get the right nutes. the best i've found this far is the advanced basic 3 part line(cheap!). you only need the Micro and Bloom. 6ml micro / 10ml bloom. its not coco specific so don't go off the label, the 6/10 ratio is perfect for coco. PH should be 5.7ish in veg and 6.2ish in flower

you'll also want to pick up either a product like maxi-cal, sweet, or epsom salts. coco requires more magnesium. if you are using tap water you only need to add it maybe 4-5 times throughout the plants life. but if you use osmosis you will want to use it every day. I use 5 ml sweet / gallon (also adds flavour/resin). you can use epsom at 1 gram / gallon. another great thing to boost plant growth in coco is adding beneficial fungi. I also use a p/k boost, liquid koolbloom, 3 weeks outta the flower period @ 3 ml /gallon

seedlings will start to yellow in 4-5 days above ground and I start feeding right away. you can start 2 ml micro / 3ml bloom. before long you can bump it up to full strength. the best advice I can give for coco is not to use too big of a pot, especially for young plants. once a plant has established a good root ball in the coco, it is IMPOSSIBLE to overwater. but at a young age continuously saturating the coco could kill the plant

i know all this might sound overwhelming but its really quite easy and i'd be willing to say you could achieve close-to-hydro results. i'll help you with any questions to make it go smooth. one last thing, here's my schedule

Based on 63 day 12/12 Flower Cycle:

Day 1-14
6ml micro
10ml bloom

Day 15-21
6ml micro
9ml bloom
3ml Kool-Bloom Liquid (0-10-10)

Day 22-28
6ml micro
10ml Bloom

Day 29-35
3ml micro
9ml Bloom
3ml Kool-Bloom Liquid (0-10-10)

Sorry I could not reply faster. You lose less then 5% of your Lumens through the water with the Fresca Sol. The fact that you have better CO2 use, can put the bulb 5 inches from the plant, and have better temps would negate that 5% loss.
I believe you can use it in a vertical grow. I don't think anyone has done it yet but I know it can be done. You don't need a very large pump because you want the water to flow slowly thus gathering the heat around the bulb. I have been told that you want just a bit over 100 gph to flow through your light system. I would say you can run the water jacket downwards or if you need to slow the rate of water, run the flow up through the bulb and out the top.
I would imagine you would be the first to try this application.

BTW nice plants!

the 316 grams is a nice few months of smoke....shit ive need to get my gpw up in the tent as well bro...i only got 368 grams from my 600 which is only .61 gpw but i have gotten 336 grams from 350 watts of CFL's so i think i need to work on the HPS yields a bit!

what up killa! that purple wreck was some frosty shizz. had to clean the shears twice to finish the plant off :D I also have had great results with cfls, but nothing to complain about with the hps either :rasta:

hehe 316 gr is wayy too much for me I barely smoke an 1/8th every two weeks!

sorry to hear about the early chop chop. i hate, yet love when that happens!

that's a huge bud you got on pheno #1! everthing look amazing!

thnks for followin along shake! that strain really puts off some large colas, cant wait to run it again and find the best phenotype. i hope everything is going well on your end!!

Good luck with the cure and finished product. How far along was it and how far had ypu planned on going with it? Many people like 50% amber or more yet a verry good finish crop can be 100% cloudy, depending on strain and stuff.

well i don't really harvest on trichs. was told a method that has been pretty foolproof. once the hairs start to turn over and suck back into the calyx its almost ripe. casey jones according to the breeder goes 65-70 days so it had two weeks left. they were all 1-2 weeks early. which isn't all that bad :)

good to know can't wait to give it a try :D

1 at a time though...

purple wreck

taste: hashy with that trainwreck lemon kick. still has a lot of curing to do but already tastes well
appearance: one of a kind
high: the high is very paralyzing making it hard to do this review. at first it is a very racy head high with the body completely numb. the head high mellows out but it is a very strong body high leaving you inable to do anything but think. it is comparable to supersilverhaze in strength because of the trainwreck and that body stone from the urkle. top 5 for me :stoned:

Casey Jones

taste: still needs more curing. smell is sort of musky/skunky at the moment
appearance: exceptional for being early!
high: long and very stoney. left me and a buddy stoned from a bong rip for hours. kind of euphoric in the beginning maybe a little overwhelming but the 4-5 hour come down is very nice.

SuperGirlxGrandDaddyPurp pheno #1

taste: has a real rich flavor almost like caramel with a apple or some kind of fruity aftertaste. still needs more curing though
appearance: decent appearance. nice sized nugs
high: perfect daytime smoke. leaves you clearheaded to do things but you definitely know your stoned

SuperGirlxGrandDaddyPurp pheno #2

taste: sickening fruity. almost too much. smell is the same way. green apples
appearance: little more dense then pheno 1. tighter buds, this pheno is more indica leaning.
high: stronger then pheno 1. makes me want to nap or eat lol. preferably both.

lol..

little sneak preview of what i'm up to. trying to get the room finished and underway. 1000w vertical (hopefully)

veg box (casey mother, 5 casey clones, and the seeds are supergirlxgdp)

and the attempt to reproduce a tent (4x4x5h).. cost like $50.. still have a lot to do.. could of been better but its actually quite sturdy. the hemp doubles as 1)preventing the poly from sucking in and 2)low stress training :)
