Hey all! I just made an impulsive buy for a 250w HPS bulb off ebay. I trying to switch from CFL's to HID for optimal yield. I know I need a ballast now to provide power to the bulb.

My question - Can I take apart this HPS commercial light fixture(see below pic), which has a built-in 250w ballast, and steal its ballast? Is it going to be difficult for someone w/ little electrical background? Somebody in my area is selling these light fixtures on Craigslist for $20, a great way to save on cash if I can.

Thanks for any help on this topic

Yes!

Find out if those security lights are 110-120v.

The rigid box looking thing mounted on top of the bowl shaped reflector, just so happens to be the ballast.

Should just have to remove the reflector, add an extension to the cord between the socket and ballast, put the ballast somewhere safe up high, and hang your bulb.

Yes, it won't be that hard to wire it up, but like the other guy said, you have to make sure you wire for the right voltage. It might be set up for 240v or something like that. Not hard, everything is labeled, just gotta make sure you use the right screw nuts.
