SOG - What's your opinion on plants per pot?

I'm intending to do a SOG in soil. I have 48 plants available. My room is just under 4'x4' with a 600w HPS. Here is what I'm considering:

1 plant per pot - 36 plants in 36 1 gallon pots
2 plants per pot - 40 plants in 20 3 gallon pots
3 plants per pot - 48 plants in 16 3 gallon pots

I don't think this will fit in my room, but if does -

3 plants per pot - 48 plants in 16 5 gallon pots

I realize I could also use a combination of different size pots. I just want to know peoples experiences and opinions on multiple plants in a pot. Thank you.

On another note, if you are growing from seed, you should start small on the pots and work your way up to bigger ones on the way up to flowering. I would recommend being in a 5 gal. pot by the time your in flower. The more room for roots, the better the yield (including other factors of course).

Also, that is a LOT of pots in a 4X4 (16 sq ft.) space I'm thinking maybe it might be overcrowded and create problems. That's just me though! :D

It's not just the tangling.
It's the competition as well.
Most plant roots produce chemical inhibitors at their root tips that impede the growth of their siblings and interlopers in an attempt to prevail.

There's a chemical fight going on underground.
It's one of the reasons we need to pull weeds in the garden.
There's a lot more going on than simple competition for nutes and moisture.

Single pots make quarentine and disease treatment viable as well.

I recently switched from multi-plant hydro to one plant per bucket DWC.
I was amazed and very pleased with the difference in speed, size, and health.

So, that's 4 cents for single occupant.

i would use a tray 4x4x8 and plant them all equidistant

but if other wise i would run them in one gals or 1 1/2 gals and go for deeper over wider youll get better bud production

but in one gals i get more bud from a 400 than a geezie (1000w) cause there is not enough root space

the 3 in 3 could work also each plant still gets a gallon+ and if your going clone to flower sog you have time b4 the roots entangle just remeber to feed each plant individualy and dont soak your soil about a cup every other day unless needed and keep them single cola
