Noob here! With one really quick question. I have already searched for the answer with no results. I'm a pretty resourceful guy and have done a lot of homework, but can't seem to find the answer to this question. I can go to the local grow shop to ask, but I'm bored at work and thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any insight. So....

We are going to start growing in a Homebox XS. Here it is if you want to see. (http://www.4hydro.com/growroom/homeboxXS.asp) The dims are 2x2x4.

This (http://www.4hydroponics.com/lighting/sunSystemHPS150.asp) is the light I would like to use. It has a built in magnetic ballast, 150w hps lamp, with a 16k lumen output.

My question...with a built in ballust, will there be too much heat for my babies. I do plan on an exhaust fan and maybe an intake fan if necessary. The other (obvious) alternative would be an external electronic ballast or any other suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks in advance for the help!

you'll probably be fine.. i don;t know what kind of heat output a 150w hps has, but i can;t imagine its all that bad.

just make sure you have exhaust fans - don';t bother with in-take fans, just use passive intake holes, the exhaust fans will pull the air through fine

Perfect. Thank you very much. Now that I've done a little research I think I'm going to go with a Lumatek ballast, reflector, etc. The energy efficiency rating of the one I had mentioned before was only 35%, meaning I pay for the 65% of electricity not being used. Not cool. Plus it's a magnetic, clunky, noisy ballast.

The lumatek has a rating of 95%, a little easier to pay for a loss of 5%. Plus with the added wattage, I have more of a chance of a successful grow. More cash upfront, but better in the long run. Not to mention the added bonus of an electronic ballast, dual mode lamp supply, etc.

Thanks for the insight everyone!

Crazy ain't it!? Ya I like to live on the edge like that. Thanks tinytoon.

Well I got my lighting, exhaust, and medium last night. Just waiting for the tent to show up, should be here Friday. I'm just going to set everything up and monitor the temp before I stick one plant in there. Althought I know having the plants will have an effect on the temp, humidity, etc. At least I'll have an idea before I put one of my kids in there.

Lighting: Lumatek 250w along with a MH and HPS lamp, small econo wing relflector.
Exhaust: 131 cfm Dayton Blower(for 16cft. of airspace LOL). I was told that was the smallest air mover I could get that wouldn't bog down if I put a can on later. I still need to research on the purpose, size, and necessity of the carbondioxide cans I see some using and talking about. But I'll get there.
