I think copper gives off toxins by itself when heated but if you notice most are made of brass. If you can find a brass bowl section I would switch.

I believe copper is a pretty safe metal to smoke from.

Really? Maybe I was wrong, I'm no metalologist, but I thought I'd seen copper pipes before. Maybe they were just brass. Still, if it's just for short-term use I don't think you have much to worry about since the human body is generally good about filtering out the small amounts of toxins we ingest every day.

Copper does release toxins that build up over time, effecte won't be noticed for many years of constant exposure.

I used to clean the sludge out of waste paint thinner tanks and we used brass shovels because they wouldn't spark. Something about brass being less "reactive" or something.Higher flash point maybe.

Brass is a copper alloy in which tin is mixed with copper (I think). This produces a metal stronger than copper or tin alone, but still quite malleable. Perhapse brass doesn't spark because it doesn't chip, but rather will deform.

That was mercury, not copper.
But you still should not ever, ever smoke with a copper peice. The gas it makes when heated is fatal.
