ANTIGO, Wis. - Antigo police and Langlade County sheriff's deputies watched as $500,000 in marijuana went up in smoke at a local gravel pit.

The cannabis bonfire Wednesday night was the result of drug trafficking in the northwoods over the last several years.

County drug enforcement officer Dan Bauknecht says local authorities have been particularly effective in finding marijuana growing operations in recent years.

Officers burned 800 pot plants and 300 pounds of marijuana, including some already in blocks and ready for sale.

Authorities say they also tossed a half pound of cocaine, some heroin, Ecstasy tablets, methamphetamine and other drugs into the fire.

That's a mighty toxic brew of smoke that's been released in the air. I'd hate to think that anyone inhaled any of that brew.

The article fails to mention how much it will cost to clean up the toxic waste site. I'm sure they'll want to clean it, I'd hate to think that they'd allow that brew to be absorbed into the local aquifer.

I think it would make more of an impact to the local community if they changed the headline to: $25,000 in potential tax revenues goes up in smoke.
