Hi all, 1st post i have been reading these forums for the past few weeks waiting on income tax check to start some things up.
Got a few questions before i start growing(going to get supplies within the next few days)
*Growing in Closet*
Strand White Russian(Anyone know the yield on it i read reviews but rather find a little more feedback on it)
I am going to be growing 7 plants 6 clones 1 mother. I was wondering how many watt lights to use and how many lights.
What kind of soil people would recommend(i already have some in mind just want to have some feedback)
And any other feedback would be great tips and just stuff in general you think i should know(If i think of anymore questions ill post)

pretty much all of these questions are answered already in several different areas of the growing sections of the forums...

more or less all of those questions are impossible to answer with more details though...


soil - depends on where you live and what is available... most 'potting soils' will do, but you'll probably want to add perlite to it (even if it already has some)... possibly some other things like vermiculite too. Some also swear by avoiding any soils with time-released nutrients in them (like many miracle grow soils), but others also grow with them perfectly fine.

lights - depends on your budget, as well as the square footage of your grow area and height of your grow area (Flouros and CFLs are good for smaller spaces since they don;t run nearly as hot as MH & HPS light)

As for the strain you are growing... couldn't tell ya, but I'd just google for it personally ;) peoples yields will vary greatly on alot of different factors... and with this being your first grow, expect smaller yields than what others might brag about... you will probably make mistakes along the way... and some people with really good yields are insanely good growers that can recognize plant problems before the plant even realizes it!


ps. don't forget about proper ventaliation for your closet... it is often overlooked, but just as important as your lighting, especially if your using MH/HPS lights that produce alot of heat

The closet is 15 square ft. I read on review on the seeds that one person had about 3oz per plant. I am going to have like 2 small rotating fans in it on top part and 1 big rotating fan in there probably do more for ventalation but atm idk.
And i have been reading the plant sickness section a little ima look more into it cause i dont want them getting sick :thumbsup:

Question about nutrients im sure once i buy it, it will probably answer this question if i read the directions but to be on safe side.
The nutrients will tell you when to add it right, and should you be adding it like right after sprout?

Most people won't give nutes for at least 4 weeks from sprout as you could severely burn them up....Also when you do start to feed them, start off with 1/4 strength to see how they respond to the nutes and then gradually build up to full strength doses!

I'd wait atleast 2 weeks before you feed them. and always start with 1/4 to a 1/2 of what the directions say. this way you can see how they react, plus that eases them into it.

What kind of veg light should i get?

depends on your route... theres probably nothing better than an MH for veg. For a 15 square foot grow space you'll probably want a 400 or 600watt... 600 would be best, 400 might be a tad on the low side...

i think 400watt MH puts out around 35,000 lumens, so that'd be just under 2500 lumens per sq foot which is about the minimum you'd want. assuming you';d then switch to a HPS for flower, a 400w HPS would put out around 55,000 lumens or 3600 lumens per sq. foot which is kind of... ok... but not ideal

i would do 600watt if its in your budget and your grow space is tall enough to keep the light at a safe distance.

if you are dealing with a shorter grow space, you might want to go the CFL / Flouro route...

if you are going the CFL route, you'll want a mix of 2700K and 6500K colour temperature bulbs (they say on the packaging somewhere most of the time). You'd want to go heavy on the 6500K bulbs for veg, then heavy on the 2700K bulbs for flower.

Flouros are more or less the same story as CFLs... you want to look for "T5" high output grow bulbs

I am getting a 400 MH/HPS Super Wing 1 light :P.
I ordered strand violator kush(femanized) and i got a bunch of other seeds that were just free.

I would love to see a violator kush grow as I myself almost ordered them, but then decided to get something cheaper as I didn't want to spend all that money and get nothing! :wtf:

I got femanized and i will make a grow log. Originally i was going to get White Russian cause i wanted top of the line bud. And it said 22%thc likely to be one of the strongest or the strongest bud. Well i found violator kush cheaper same thc % and got femanized with extra seeds so :P.
Anyways i will make a grow log when i get everything hopefully within this week i ordered lights, nuts, rooting solut, etc online.
For now though i have a big osiclating fan for bottom part of closet and a top mini like 9 inch i think fan. Is this decent ventilation for now? If i feel it is too, hot i will get another fan.

It should be good enough to keep everything circulating. No really way to tell if it will suffice till you got the grow room set up. When you do get ready to start, do a dry run with just the lights on a couple of days and look at the temperature throughout the day for those two days. The dry run will save you from starting and not being able to control the heat issues first. Temperature is VERY important in my opinion throughout the grow. You want to stay in a range of 75-78 if possible. Anything hotter than that usually slows growth. Plus you said you are getting a 400W HPS/MH so that part will be essential before starting. If it is too hot, maybe you should look into cool tubes or a portable ac unit.

Yeah, i am putting a thermostat in it, but as for now if those fans arent enough i may drill a few holes in walls, and get another fan. Personally, I do not think it will get too hot, thanks for advice m8 bout dry run :rastasmoke:

Quick, question. Why is it that my friend has been growing for like 6-7months on his widow plant but he only has 1 light he says 400 watt but he has no nutes.
Also any other tips/instructions(what to do and not to) for growin. I ordered everything now just waiting...

Wait at LEAST a month, but you can go longer up to years.....It's all on your really. Also, depending on your grow space you want to make sure that you are going to have the room for your plants as to when you get to flowering they are going to stretch and double to triple in size. So KEEP THAT IN MIND

My mother plant wants it gets big enough to make another 5-6 clones will it affect the light schedule on both if mother plant is ahead?

The light i ordered that i thought i ordered turned out to just be a huge metal thing(ballast or w.e).400 Watt - Metal Halide Ballast - F Can - Sola E-MCAOFT400F Light Bulb (http://www.1000bulbs.com/400-Watt-Metal-Halide-F-Can-Ballast/34245/) Thought it actually was a light etc.

I'd be careful mentioning street sales around here. For one thing, it's against site rules.

If you haven't recieved the seeds already, I'd start some bagseeds to see what problems you come up against. Plus, you won't be killing expensive seeds trying to learn how to grow.

I'd recommend you start small, and build as your experience grows. Many setbacks are likely, and over-exuberance can destroy your chances for success.

Figure-out the growspace before worrying about the indicators of your ladies being sick. It can take years of gardening before you become proficient at self-diagnosing.

A newbie is lucky to get an ounce from a 3 gallon plant. 3 oz. per plant, (post dry-n-cure) is highly unlikely.

Instead of hanging-out in the plant problems section, you might want to check-out some of the grow logs for ideas and tips.

Fans are great for air circulation, but ventilation is just as important. Passive intake low in the closet...fan-forced exhaust up top.

What soil and nutrients are you planning on using?

I see you've got lots of good answers here. I agree with reading (lots of) threads on this site that are like the grow you're doing. Also check out the websites for internet grow stores and check all all the stuff available and compare thngs in general. There are threads where folks have recommended a few good vendors. Try HTG Supply's website (http://www.htgsupply.com/) to see all the soils, lights, nutes, etc.

Looking forward to seeing your plants tearing it up.

I have my seeds i am just trying to find some good lights.. When i ordered the ballast i thought it was a built 2ft light ballast with bulb and everyrthing(was tokin)
I can't wait to start, i love bud.

I found a light that im going to be ordering from today and saturday 50,000 lumens.
Already have seeds and everything.
