Northeastern Dutch Passion Brainstorm and Blueberry Grow 2009

What's up guys? At the moment I have 2 Brainstorm plants that are what I believe to be about 2 1/2 weeks along. I have a blueberry seed coming in the mail which will be part of this log later. Prior to these pictures both plants were suffering from very red stems, an apparent magnesium deficiancy (brown spots), and the bottom leaves were yellow. Temperature wasn't that problem (its always around 80-84) and it was obvious they weren't being underfed. I fed them a double shot of foxfarms grow big about 5 days ago and they appear to be doing much better. The new foliage has hardly any brown spots yet some still remain on the lower parts of the plants.

Note--------I just watered them an hour ago thats why one of them is kind of limping. Before they were both up right reaching for the light.

I plan to repot both of them tomorrow and feed them again a couple days later. Soon after I'm going to be needing to take clones because I want to do more then 3 plants this grow.

if your only 2 1/2 weeks in its way too soon to be giving nutes!

they are going to get nute burned... which i could be wrong, but that looks like exactly what is happening to your lower leaves that are yellowing.

and you gave a double-shot of nutes? i;m not familiar with the fox farm line (i know its popular.. but can;t get it here) but wow that seems like a huge no-no compared with everything I have read... everybody else (non-hydro growers) seem to start nutes around the 1 month mark and only give them like 1/4 of the recomended dosage at first and work there way up to stronger strengths (which generally still doesn;t exceed the recomended dosage)...

what is your starting soil made out of? the main reason people don;t give nutes right away is because the soil contains nutes in it already... your only adding nutes to replace the nutes that get used up from the soil... if your soil contained nothing to begin with (this would really mean its not soil i think...) then this would make sense though.

Yellow leaves don't always mean over fert thats a huge missconception. It entirely depends on the way in which the leaves are yellowing. The ENTIRE leaf slowly turned yellow, it didn't have a harsh burn at the tip and move down. Also... because of the presence of red stems its impossible for there to be over fert.

All i know is that they appear to be doing great. Too be honest, it might not have been a double shot. I went braindead as i was making the solution and tried to remember exactly what i did and assumed it was a double shot it easily could have been a normal one. I know that sounds really dumb but its the reality of how I do things LOL :stoned:

i Pretty much get the same thing too people are busy and stuff but your grow looks pretty cool ill be watching. lower leaves slowly turning yellow generally means nitro deficiency. and your plants look a little older than 2.5 weeks is that from when you put the seed in the ground or once you had leaves? i say it looks like they needed the nitro to me. :thumbsup: plants look good now. well ill be stopping in all the time you should stop by mine (first grow. led) maybe we can be posting buddies lol.:wtf:

personally, i just tend to find that people only post responses when your asking questions or they see potential problems with your grow...

I work in the IT field, and we totally operate on the "no news is good news" rule... i know it can suck here when you'd like to be hearing positive feedback though :\

I think you'll also find once the grow hits the flowering stage people start getting alot more interested when you start posting some bud pics :)

I would def. agree with that statement....My first grow I didn't hear too much from people until I got to the budding phase....I mean cause a lot of times everybody likes to see a nice bushy veg. plant, but we like it more to see some bud porn with lots of calyxes and lots of trichomes. Personally, I like exotic looking buds like the purple strains :D Another reason why I've started these blueberry...Supposed to be like a pale lavender color in bud and be really fruity. That's right up my alley:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Otherwise, I will be in tuned to this grow and checking it out all the way to the end!:thumbsup: GOOD LUCK!!

I think thats also why you tend to see alot of grow logs that people don't even start until they are very close to entering the flowering stage, or have already been in it for a week or 2...

i started mine right from seed germination though... as a first-time grower, i REALLY appreciate the other grow logs that started right from the very begining.. its a little daunting doing your first grow and not having any kind of frame of reference as to what to expect... thats why i started mine early on and try and post pic updates every few days... so other new people coming along that might be growing in a similiar fashion to me can have something to look at and have some reference points...

but lets also face it... grows in a veg stage that have no problems at all and are going normally are not exactly the most exciting things to look at in the world... its when something odd happens or you start to see the final product (buds) that peoples intrests start getting perked up :)

Correct my friend.....I too on my first grow was looking for advice from everyone but got it from a few that were a real help to my grow...It's funny though because on my first grow I never tested the ph of my water, never had anything to check humidity or anything that I'm supposed to have, but I never really had a big problem so I was lucky! So long as the questions keep coming someone will be there to answer!

Quarteroy----- I'll definatly check at your grow soon. Thanks for the advice about the yellowing leaves.

Its pretty much obvious at this point the first internode of leaves on both plants are going to die but whatever everything else looks great. I checked them today and they reaching up for the light looking very happy.

I plan to repot them at some point today and I'll post more picture soon after.

the plants are looking healthy for two weeks. Give or take. :thumbsup: Also a very good deal on the FF nutes. I was wondering if you have any air circulation? since you don't have dirt up the rim of the pot, stagnant air could build up and its not good for the plants at all. At seedling stage, if the stagnant air was an issue, could easily give your babies stem rot. normally turning a darker pale brown green and becoming squishy. After that, she dries up and nothing is connected to the root. :wtf: Just saying that air circulation helps the plants breath. also, pluck out those little useless yard weeds in the pots. They'll easily suck up your nutes and water.

In the first pictures you can obviously see the three fans pulling out from the top (one is directly above the lights, I'm SURE this has a lot to do why my box has been staying so cool). In the fourth picture you can a rectangular object next to the closest plant: thats another computer fan.

All the fans are wired to a single 12 volt adapter

But I'm now cleared up on the extra fan next to the plants as well. another thing. computer fans can operate at up to 13.6v, and you having four on one 12 volt output might not be running the fans at optimum performance. also, any drainage in the containers? roots like airflow as well. :hippy:

The reason they're all wired to one is because I was pretty sure it would support them all at a pretty good speed and it made wiring a great deal less annoying. Theirs holes at the bottom of those cups and I pick them up many times a day so that moves around I guess.

what color temp cfl's you running? from the pics they almost look like soft white 2700k if so you may want to make a trip to the store for veg and buy some daylight cfl's other wise you will get some major stretch.

I think he;s doing a 50/50 mix of cool and soft white's in the 6th picture of the first post.

not bad to give em a bit of a mix, but i'd probably go all out 2700Ks for flowering personally.

the lower leaves are more than likely turning yellow due to lack of light. CFLs aren't very "potent" at penetrating very deep into a canopy (however small that canopy might be).

as long as the new growth is healthy there is nothing to worry about.

voltage is additive in series and the same accross each component. so as long as they are in parallel they should be fine.

current is additive in parallel.


I think he;s doing a 50/50 mix of cool and soft white's in the 6th picture of the first post.

not bad to give em a bit of a mix, but i'd probably go all out 2700Ks for flowering personally.

a mix of 75%, 2700K, 25%, 6500K is your best bet for flower. plants still like the blue end of the spectrum, just not as much.

I'm not flowering any of these plants inside this box. Sorry for the misunderstanding but there was a reason I entitled it "Northeastern". These plants will only be in here for another couple of weeks and then they're going outside and the log will continue like that. I'll have two more brainstorm and a blue berry soon though which will go out a few weeks after the first two.

Those red spots are definite nute/low Ph burn. I had the same symptoms once when I "F"ed up mixing nutes and used a gallon strength mix in a half gallon bottle. I used fox farm nutes also.

You need to do a flush of plane Ph adjusted water to 7 and let her sit and recover " very slow but she will.

Too tell you the truth I wasn't gonna be feeding them for awhile anyway so I would have fed them ph neutral water anyway lol. Yeah I haven't really been sure about whether or not I'm feeding them nutes correctly but I figure I obviously am alright at it.
