I always have a bet with my dad about some random (usually scientific) fact that he claims to be true, or if he doesn't believe me about something I mention... There are the ones that have come up since I was like seven...
There is no such thing as the Antarctic Ocean- Won
I HAVE seen in recent years on some maps, a "southern ocean" labeled, but not sure if it's official?
There is an animal called a vole- Won
He kept asuming I got it confused with a mole. Nope!
Polecats are not the same animal as ferrets- Won
They are said to share a common ancestor, but they are NOT genetically the same animal.
Gregg Allman's name has two gs at the end of it- Won
He should know this! He's as big of a fan if I am, but he insisted it was only one.
The closest European country to the US is Greenland- Won
He kept trying to convince me it was Russia because the western part of Russia is considered part of Europe... Eastern Russia, which connects to Alaska via the Bering Strait is officially part of Asia.
Female Alpha wolves suppress the other pack members' ovulation cycles- Won
This has been documented, especially in the case of Arctic wolves, who cannot afford to have unchecked mating, as resources are very scarce. The Alpha female would also pass along the most resilient DNA to the new cubs with the Alpha male.
Elephants are matriarchal- Won
My dad thinks all animal hierarchies are patriarchal... Nope!
Mountain lions and Cougars and Pumas are all the same animal- Won
We had to Google this one a few times before he believed me...
He always doubts me, but I'm a trivia freak- if something interesting pops up, it will remain etched in my brain for a long time.
Our current bet has to do with the whole December 12, 2012 deal. I bet him a million bucks the world won't end... If it doesn't, I get a million bucks, and if it DOES, then well, I don't have to pay him :)
What are some of the more funnier bets you've made, won, or lost in the past? :stoned:
