Please read some of my posts about my Purple Kush w/ UVB.
In a control test at 56 days trichrome production was at least five fold more on the uvb light. Use it sparingly 2 or 3 hours per 12 it will burn your plants and you.

I had no problem with plant burningg -- kept the light 6+ inches away.

I added 3 cfl (26w ea) under my 436w of T5's. (5.5 x 3 = 16.5 sf)

when I added my first cfl bulb between two plants (I hang them at just below canopy to encourage under-canopy trichome ddev) I was in awe at the changes! I saw leaflets curl and turn away from the light.

I use the lamps with my 12x12, but I can see benefits to running it only 3-4 hours at "mid-day". Lamps will last longer.

Holy shit i never thought of that.
i have one for my lizard.

makes sense though. I believe one of the functions of trics is to protect the plant from ultraviolet rays.

i might have to try that

What kind of UVB bulbs are you guys using? I saw these online:

Pet supplies, pet products, pet supply store, pet shop — Petstore.com (http://www.petstore.com/ps_showCart.aspx?scType=add)

It's been a few years since I've been in a good situation to grow but for my last few closet grows back then I had a 600w HPS, an 8 bulb 4' T5 fixture mounted on the back wall and a UVB medical use T8 bulb. This was a killer combination. I had grown several crops without the UVB and when I added it to the grow for 5-6 hours per day the difference was stunning and sticky! Trichome production on varieties that I had grown for years was noticeably increased along with the desirable side effects of our beloved herb.

Back then I did a lot of Googling on the internet to find the bulb. It was a bulb made by Philips and I had to order it from a medical supply company somewhere in the Seattle area by mail order. The guy didn't want to sell the bulb to me because of the potential skin damage, cancer risk, etc. if anyone would be explosed. I assured him that I grew culinary herbs for area high end restaurants and I had experimented with UVB reptile lights but I had read that stronger medical UVB lighting increased the production of the various herbs essential oils and would enhance the flavour of the herbs. I also had to send a signed statement that they were not to be used for medical purposes or anywhere that people or animals could be exposed and the sales guy was kind of intrigued and sold it to me.

You do need to be careful with stronger UVB exposure. Skin and eyes can be damaged with prolonged exposure. I wired my UVB light so that I could unplug it before I opened my grow closet.

Peace!
