Could it be true!? Could it actually happen?

San Francisco - The Snitch - Legalize It: Ammiano to Introduce Legislation Monday to Allow Pot -- and Tax It (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2009/02/legalize_it_ammiano_to_introdu.php)

The story SF Weekly broke on Friday is true: Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will announce legislation on Monday to legalize marijuana and earn perhaps $1 billion annually by taxing it.

Quintin Mecke, Ammiano's press secretary, confirmed to SF Weekly that the assemblyman's 10 a.m. Monday press conference regarding "new legislation related to the state's fiscal crisis" will broach the subject of reaping untold -- and much-needed -- wealth from the state's No. 1 cash crop.

Mecke said Ammiano's proposed bill "would remove all penalties in California law on cultivation, transportation, sale, purchase, possession, or use of marijuana, natural THC, or paraphernalia for persons over the age of 21."

The bill would additionally prohibit state and local law officials from enforcing federal marijuana laws. As for Step Two -- profit -- Ammiano's bill calls for "establishing a fee on the sale of marijuana at a rate of $50 per ounce." Mecke said that would bring in roughly $1 billion for the state, according to estimates made by marijuana advocacy organizations.

If this happens, I hope the rest of the states stop being fuck n' stupid and follow suit. Funny how a bunch of stoners with reefer madness are smarter than 9 of 10 pollitical figs.

Commenters were bitching about the $50 tax, but shit, the prices would ultimately go down from competition. Lower the price of an oz by $50 and just take the loss, not losing that much. And an oz would still cost the same.

Plus electric companies would profit from increased electricity consumption. More water used, nutes, hydro systems, etc. Everyone will make more money except for co ops, but they would have more customers i'd imagine so.....

With the surge in consumption with legalizatation, $50 is far too high per ounce. It should be taxed no different then alcohol and cigarettes which are far more harmful. :twocents: And this should aplly on the federal level just as well.

Not much chance of it being passed but it would be great if it did. Maybe help pull Cali out of the mess its in. And if they were the only state to do it, it would generate alot more money than it is now. People would come from all over the country and the world to partake.

They said they wanted to lower the price of the weed (street value) by 50% to increase the consumption by an estimated 40%..... then adding the weed tax of $50 a oz would lower it by 10% ......So your $500 oz would cost you $300 with tax....Shit I'm 1000% for that:thumbsup:

Betty Yee, the chairwoman of the Board of Equalization, called Ammiano's proposal "a responsible measure on how to work out the regulatory framework of the legalization of marijuana." Her board's research indicated $1.3 billion in tax dollars could immediately head into the state's coffers from the fee on marijuana and the sales tax on medical pot. She figured the halving of marijuana's street price would cause a consumption increase of 40 percent, but the $50 per ounce levy would cut use by 11 percent.

Now the paper and tree companies wont like their business being taken over by hemp....everyone can write on hemp paper
