View Full Version : Difference between the dank I buy and the dank I grow

Why is it that these little nugs that you buy from people that you know weren't cured smell so rank when you pop a jar or pinch the nug and they taste so delicious, but sometimes when you grow the nug seems to lose its smell or flavor after the dry? (These are really good nugs, just not big like the clones I grow)
Anyone else experienced this and anyone know why this occurs when you are drying out the same way?
I flush for a week and grow organic in soil. I hang for 2 or 3 days and then throw into brown paper bags where they stay for another 4-6 days before being jarred, where I keep them until they are done(except for popping occasioanlly).
Note: I have always grown with a 250 and I am growing for the first time SOG with a 600 so my results could be way different. I also added some extra supplements this time around to the fox farm 3 (liquid karma, sugar daddy, pk 13/14, clearex for flush)
Any help would be appreciated, as my nugs look staight out of amsterdam covered in crystals and I yield in a little over a week at 63 days and I want it to be the best to date. I always get nervous during the dry and cure process as sometimes when your throwing them into the jars they already seem to have lost a lot of the smell.

When I cure......I trim as many leaves as possible before downing the plant....then I hang the entire plant (cut of at the base) in the dark 65-70*F until the plants feels dry....usually about a week.
I then get a 33 gallon trash bag and enclose the entire plant inside the bag and tie the top off...I leave the plant hanking up inside the bag for 2 days...it draws the moisture from the stems/stock back into the buds allowing for a slow cure.
After the 2 days I remove the trash bag and let the plant dry until the buds are nice and dry 2-3 days.
Smell has to do with strain...you want some smelly herb get some skunk #1 or a indica strain
Taste normally has to do with strain, flushing and curing....the slower the cure the better the taste

Thnsk for the response. I grow SOG though so i don't know how efficient bagging every separate plant would be.
Also about the strains, every strain I buy thogh, whether it be some kali mist, kush, mazar, sour diesel, norhtern lights, ssh...its all ranky (You know that dank smell! All plants have it that are grown right, or suppose to) Anyone know what I'm taslking about and had some buds lose there smell or flavor and know what caused it?
I just wants to avoid any downfalls and have the best nug ever...thanks in advance

i know what you mean, it doesnt lose taste just doesnt smell like the stuff you would buy. Looks great, taste's good just does not have the smell unless you squeeze it.

Iv'e seen many home grown plants turn out to smell like grass. No not grass weed, grass like backyard grass! From organic to hydro. Even seen some while growing and smelling very pugnent, then turn out to smell like backyard grass even after properly curing.
This cant just be genetic. Their was smell while growing, something must have happened to the smell but what.....?

i have a very stinky one while growing, but it hardly smells when you open a jar of it, not like it matters to me but i do like that danky smell, as stinkyattic put it "smells like 2 skunks fucking" smell lol.

Exactly! How do I get the '2 skunks fucking' smell every time? The shit smells GREAT during veg and is sticky as hell covered in trichs, I want it to keep this smell. Thanks again
Maybe Stinky Attic will pop her head in?

I had a friend who grew like 15 plants once from seeds he ordered online, were talking top quality strains here. Satori, Hash Plant, White Widow, etc. I saw them a few time while they were flowering, all their smells were so pugnent and distinguished from one another. But once they were harvested, dried and cured, they lost it all and smelled like back yard grass. Well, good smelling back yard grass but not anything like these genetics should have.
He trimmed leaves once harvested and hung in dark ventilated room for 3-4 days, then cured for 1-2 weeks. End product was mierda.
What am I not seeing here, why does this happen so often to people?

I really hope some pro's chime in as well. I would love to see what they say.
I'm scared about this right now. I don't want to loose all the hard work that I've put in for this fun yet daunting hobby.
Please Stinky, spread your wisdom.

During the first part of the cure, you will notice more of a vegetable/hay smell- Usually when you dry, first you hang, then go into a paper bag or right into a glass jar to be 'burped' for a week or so. At the end of this, your buds are dried down to weight, but they don't smell like much of anything.
Leave them in a glass jar, LOOSELY packed, checking every couple days to verify that they do not feel moist or smell like ammonia, which means you jarred them too early and they may be decaying. After 2-4 weeks, you will notice that the hay smell is fading and the pot smell is coming back.
You only get 2 skunks fucking when you grow a roadkill skunk strain. Otherwise you might just get one skunk masturbating with lemon furniture polish, which is a pretty common variation on the skunk theme, or no skunks wrestling in a pile of rotting fruit.
If two skunks fuck and no potheads are there to appreciate it, do they really stink?

My 2 cents on scent:
I don't think my homegrown smells all that much. It doesn't have a strong scent in the house, it isn't super strong when i'm in the grow room, and it doesn't smell super strong when i'm drying, curing, and enjoying it.
It DOES smell VERY STRONG when i chop em down and take them out of the ventilated room to harvest. It DOES smell VERY STRONG when friends pull it out at their homes.
Although a couple people say they have caught wiffs in different areas of my house...I have drawn 2 conclusions - 1.) You get used to the smell of your own home. Like when you go to someone else's house, their home has a distinct scent. Your home does too, but because you are there 24/7 you are used to it and can't smell it, even your weed. 2.) My odor control is improving since I started.
just a thought.

Im going to put that to the test when i cut down my silver haze in a week or so. I will cure a small amount for about a month in he jar and see what difference that does to the lady as compared to the rest..
Thanks for the info.
So when bud smells really good it means it was cured for an extended period, or do some just naturally smell dank cure or no cure?

That's what i was wondering...and I'm not entirely convinced that all the dank nugs I have had were cured? No matter what the strain, even if it wasn't a skunk such as kali mist, northern lights, alaskan thunderfuck, white widow, sour diesel, south island skunk (this is a skunk) are all REALLY stinky.
Were they just all cured, or just grown well?

I would have to say it boils down to the cure. WTF if thats what Stinky says it gets my vote!!!!

Yeah stinky knws more than all of us probably every will!
My buddy just finished his Cheese grow and has had it in jars for exactly 2 weeks and told me it is just now startng to get rid of the plant smell and take on a smell of its own.
So thi sis what I am going to try:
1. Hang dry for 2-3 days (Cutting off as much leaf as possible)
2. Then into brown paper bags until ready for jarring
3. Jar and burp for around a week (until they quit freshening back up)
4. Jar and seel (Pop once a week)
How's that sound stinky?
Also I have grown Mazar once before, has 2 phenos, a green and purple, this time I had 2 green phenos, one spicy smelling and the other a delcioius orange citrus smell. I am leaning towards the orange citrus...anyoe ever smoked mazar and have a preference towards a pheno?
I am letting it go 63 days instead of 56 cause everythign I read says to really let your mazar finish.
