View Full Version : Hold your hits?

I haven't seen any discussion in a long time about whether or not you should hold you hits, so I think I'll start one. What do you guys think? To hold your hit or not to hold your hit. That is the question.
Personally, I don't usually, but I think it will get you higher, faster. If you have a small amount that your smoking, if you take a hit and hold it you'll get more out of it than if you blow it out quickly. But I also think it's less healthy to hold a hit in for a long time, so as a general matter, I usually don't unless I'm running out.

well ive always been told to hold your hits. it make more sense, if you hold is your lungs get all the smoke and longer. also you can take 2nd hits when someone breathe the smoke into your mouth so it just shows that some of the smoke your breathing out can still get you high

I mean, yeah, of course. From my experience I found at least holding the hit in seven seconds gets you the most, how should I put this, "bang for buck".

I usually just hold it for about 5 seconds or so.

i always try to hold for quite a while, though i find in practice i only hold for 3-5 at any given time anyways. though i feel at times that when i exhale there is still a fresh taste to the hits which leads me to believe that the hits have more goodies in them. i should hold longer, especially on my vape.

i agree with the OP on this one... hold it longer it makes the weed last longer but im sure its a lot less healthy for the lungs....i personally hold for a good 10 - 15 seconds on most hits...

If I had a vape I would make it a point to always hold my hits. That way your not damaging your lungs any further from prolonged exposure to smoke, and you have plenty of time to absorb the large concentration of thc in the vapor, into your blood stream.

Holding is worse for your lungs by far. Think about it your holding in a lot of smoke that has bad things for your lungs in it. 95% of thc is absorbed the second you inhale the smoke...that is good enough for me.

I've always held as long as I could.
In the past I coughed some on some hits but no big thang.
These days the bud is by far more potent and expands alot more once inhaled so I can cough too hard and get a heavy red face from all the blood rushing.
Aside from a shotgun blast in blood pressure during a too harsh cough, doing do is not all that good for the eyes.
Yes...the eyes.
The eyes have pressure in them and the tear ducks move fluids so a hard cough can and does spike the internal pressure for a few moments.
Having had serious and involved eye surgery on both eyes...torn retinas stitched/gassed and buckles installed/lens replacements, etc etc I have to pay close attention and care to save my eye sight.
After every surgery there are weeks in recovery and during this time there is NO bending over, lifting more than 10 #s or deep heavy coughing and no sneezing as well.
Doing any of these things can tear the retina by increasing the fluid pressure inside the eyes and this inturn expands the eye ball and causes the now stretched retina to tear and even detach from the wall.
A healthy eye does not have the higher risk as does an eye after such extensive surgery but none the less can cause a retina to tear and/or detach.
Generally the damage does not show for months to come and times even in years.
I simply take hits small enough to hold in for a moment and not cough and gag.
The way things are now it is not cool to cough with friends smoking and seems considered pretty stupid.
WHY I dunno.
But then I see so many who take a hit and blow it out like a half ass drag off a cigarette.
Why inhale a good hit and in less than a second let it go?
The more time inhaled the more time for more THC to be absorbed by the lungs.
Three crappy fast inhales make for one good toke held in for a good 10 to 15 seconds in my math guessimate.
Friends say so what and why bother as the bud per hit is cheap enuff not to labor over holding hits in.
Well I just don't agree and while I cannot hold a hit like I used to, I do anyway and all the while I do take good care not to cough out my eye balls.
I just went from a spoon pipe to a small Pyrex flask kind of water pipe.
The bowl is small but holds far more than I alone can smoke up in one session with 2 hit high bud.
Here's the simple reasons why a water pipe cooling the smoke helps when inhaling.....
Lighting up the bud makes the weed go from an organic solid to an expanding hot gas.
The hot gas rapidly expands into the chamber and once bubbled thru water the gas is slightly cooled.
This cooling process reverts the expansion of the gas and in turn causes the expanded gases to condense.
Thus when inhaled the gases will not expand as much nor at as fast a rate had it not been cooled down.
What also takes place is condesation to some extent depending on the chamber size and just how cool to iced cold the water and glass is.
The colder the water the more condesation there will be in the gas/smoke.
Condesation is the rapid cooling of a vapor/gas partially back to a liquid state and this means moisture.
Moist air intake into the lungs can and does cause a cough now and again.
Take a person living in a dry climate and fly them to a very humid place and the air seems impossible to breath without taking a knife and cutting a bite of air to chew on.
Side by side a cooled hit will have more high in it than a hot hit for the only reason the hit is more condensed and not as expanded.
As for me.....I'll hold my smaller hits and have more hits inhaled rather than many hits puffed up and let go to smoke a room out.
Where the clowns get off taking mega hits out of a 3 foot bong is beyond me.
The bragging rights are the biggest hit and that only means more up in smoke and less up on the highs.
My most enjoyable hits to blazed comes from the literal body and head rush hits I get from the very first two and even a third hit by passing the flame over the bud and just barely burning the bud.
I mean just barely burned the bud in the bowl and has hardly any burnt coloring on the top surface.
This vaporizes the crystals and the taste is awesome and then some.
As soon as the hit is inhaled there is an unmistakable head and body rush almost as if chemically induced.
Unbelievable flavor and head rush turns into a glossy nice velvet smoooooth high.
So much so I tend to put as little into the bowl so I can flash burn the top and by the time a second hit is done the last hit will be to burn up the last of the bud and add more to do the same thing all over again.
No hassle having to load a bowl really and the extra benefit of the super head and body rush is worth it many times over.
The vaporized couple of first hits are soooo much easier to hold as well so there's far more high per gram.
Sure beats packing a bowl and taking hits like a kid with a cigar IMHO.
After the first two hits done like this then it's lite up the bud as always and away ya go.

iv been holding mine in recently, due to practicing what i refer to as "scentless smoking". it helps with the whole not-getting-caught part of living in an anti-drug household. but smoking out of an apple in the shower seems to get me by, and holding in my hits ensures that very little smell escapes.

so ive been making a conscience effort to hold my hits longer, ive noticed ive become noticeably higher. good choice, only for the vape though, the pipes still get a short shot.
