how young is too young???

hey im growing a plant and i want keep it pretty small cuse ive got limited space. its a good strain and i want to get some bud out of it and i was wondering just how young is too young to begin the 12/12 light schedule. the plant is about 3 weeks old but i want to bud soon.

With clones retaining the sexual maturity of the mother you can clone as early as you want. this is what people doing SOG do. Just wait till youve got roots then go for it.

its from seed though not a clone.

Age isn't as important as its size. Depending on strain you can count on it growing 2-3x its size when put to flower. I would go by that rather than age.

Well to refrase this question for both this individual's and my own edification, aproxamatly how many leaf sets is reqiured, what would be the ramifications of initiating short light cycles too early beyond the expeted reduced yeilds? From seed of course...

After it pops out of the soil and you get the next set of leaves past the first round ones.... give it 2 weeks of veg cycle 18/24 hrs light....then cut your lights 12/12.....during the next 10-14 days your plant will double in size until your in flower then it will still grow alttle taller because of the colas

To rephrase my answer for your edification, it depends on many factors, not the least of which is what you expect out of your yields. Sure, you will get something if you start to flower at the 5th or 6th node but it's going to be a small yield and probably not worth all the time and money spent. It may help for you to tell us how much space you have to work with and what kind of lights you plan to use on what strain.

If you want some ideas with photos and details, look in the grow logs. Your question does not have such a cut and dried answer.

im growing under 3 100 watt cfls, 2 blue spectrum and one red. dont know the strain for sure, it was from a bag i got and it was supposibly OG Kush. thank you for all the replies people, it helps alot.

I am growing a hash-indica, thing, a couple of ~skunk style crosses, an African sativa sort of chic, and a lanky asian sativa plant under the glorious glow of a 400w hps. I am trying to determine the vibe of artificial enviroments, and have no expectations of yeild-mearly hope. Is there any chance of sexual confusion due to unusualy short vegatative growth cycles?
