My boss announced this morning that he is closing the lab and moving it to another state. Id' have a job at his new location but it's 1000 mi away and I can't sell my house in this economy, and wouldn't move for that crappy pay anyway. That's on top of all the crap I already had going on.
What. The. Fuck.
I NEED to vent. And I intend to spend the next month scouring Craigslist for something perfect for a chemist-hydro tech-bar manager- graphic designer- agriculture instructor-stringed instrumenet repair person-line cook- tutor- substitute teacher- commercial fisherman- lab tech- lab equipment maintenance specialist- landscape technician- FUCK, someone with a resume like mine should have no problems finding a job but the newspapers are just FULL of accounting, nursing, and AVON sales ads... I'm SO fucked. So, SOOO, SOOOOO fucked.

Wow man sorry about your job loss, ironic tho i just quit like 30 mins ago.

Some girl with a big mouth got on my last nerve.

Worst part about loosing your job is a potential drug test for new one.

Stinky, that sucks. Sorry.

I bet everyone you've helped will keep their eyes and ears open, and find you new position.

You would be wonderful addition to any employer's roster. You can always come stay with me. I could use your expertise. What are your thoughts on KY?

I know this doesn't help, but keep your chin up.

It sucks not having a job. I've had too many already and I'm not even out of college yet!! Luckily Iowa has a seemingly unlimited supply of hog confinments, so if someone really needs a job....

But I have went from making $1600 a month with a part time hog barn last year to doing work study and making a grand a sem. + extra loan money for rent so I'm getting by for now. Grad in the spring.

Hey Stinky sorry that no shave thread got out of hand, i was actually going to ask to have it deleted. Peace out homies.

Sorry to hear it. I'm collecting unemployment myself, and my wife will be jobless soon as well because her workplace is closing down early 2009.

The recession is in full swing, and it's going to be a rough one.

Good luck in your job search.

Wow guys. Thank you. I didn't expect this outpouring of good wishes at all.

I found something perfect since I posted, that actually seems like a job made just for me. It's sustainable food production related and requires water chemistry skills... But my area is already filled with people with Masters' degrees working as waitresses... it's going to take some doing.
Who here has a bald head I can rub for good luck!!?

Sorry to hear about the bad news, but it sounds like a good lead on a new gig. Good luck with that. You are smart, talented and have a very wide ranging skill set, so you should do OK, whether it it this opportunity or something else.

It's interesting you mentioned an opportunity in sustainable food production, becasue I'm looking at doing something in sustainable food production myself. I heard about this guy in San Francisco who started a business in which he will go to a client's house and put in a backyard organic vegetable garden for them for a fee. Then he'll come back once a week to maintain and harvest for them, again for a fee. It's for people who want to HAVE a garden but don't want to BE a gardener, and for people who want to EAT homegrown food, but not GROW it themselves. He also has an agreement to collect excess harvests and sell it on sort of a CSA basis. I'm going to look into doing this kind of thing myself.

If this economy goes deeper into the dumper, a lot of us may need to look at making our own opportunities rather than looking for jobs. You are smart enough that I can see you making a good go at your own business of some kind.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I'm SO fucked. So, SOOO, SOOOOO fucked.

Congratulations!
And I mean that!
Why?
Because you now have options.
Now, you are available.
The best way to get a huge raise, is to change jobs.
Opportunities abound!
Even/especially in this economy.

Best advice I ever got was from an old guy who was about to retire from the machine shop where I worked as a youngster.
He was the smartest guy there, so I petitioned for advice. Really had to push for it too.
Can't fault him for that. Advising a 20 year old is usually a waste of time.:)

I asked him what he would do now post-retirement.
He said; "I will probably die very soon. All my friends that worked one job for 40 years died in less than 2 years. "
Their job WAS their identity, their life, their "safe" rut.

I begged him to tell me what he'd do if he could start over.

He said;
"Retire now! Get the hell out of here with their carrot-on-a-string raises and vague promises of future training, etc.
1. No-one pays a young man/woman what they are worth.
Play! Find out what you love to do. Odds are, someone will come along and screw it up by paying you to do it.

2. Here, if they train you to be, say, a lathe operator, lathes will be automated before you can blink twice and you'll end up doing something you don't love and calling that a living.:(
3. If you manage to last 40 years, retirement sucks, everything hurts, and the end of 2/3rds of your life will leave you feeling lost and miserable.

What about a pension?

"Take a job at age 40, (entrance pay will be a lot higher), work 15 or 20 years and re-retire if you need a pension.

Go and see the world now, while it's still fun."

But what will I live on I asked?

"All the opportunities that you missed by being in harness 8 hours a day.!!"
He answered.

He was dead right on all counts!
I bagged my tools, cleaned my bench and said polite goodbyes to the other drones.

First year was rough.
Had car payments and rent to cover.:upsidedow
Then, gradually, I plugged in.
Had time to learn, had freedom to exploit what I learned.
Found that electronics was fascinating.
Reproducible magic. Easy as pie and people were eager to overpay me for it.
I love to solve problems and was available to do just that. During the day when everyone else was "busy making a living":)

Bought a house, never missed a mortgage payment and had a permanent smile for the next 20 years.
When I turned 45, I bluffed my way into a troubleshooting contract with the biggest network in the world.

Because of my freedom, I still know how to think "outside the box" that made me look good as a troubleshooter.

Of course, one does need a work record for social security, so after a year this, highschool "throwout", accepted a position that required a bachelor's degree. Held that position for 13 months.
Pay was great, bennies were great, the people were brilliant and stimulating.

Longest year of my life.
God, I hated going to work every damn day!:(:(:(:D

So, cheer-up!
You have traded "security" for opportunity.

I've read all your posts.
You are smarter than me and you have multiple skills.
Had you charged a reasonable fee for all the guidance you donated here, you would be doing just fine without a "realjob".

No gotta suffer another Mass. winter now, if you don't want to.:)
Sure the R.E. market is in a slump.
Selling is not advised.
But, rents are still high.
Wanna really shake up your life.
Rent your home to a grower. (saves a lot of clean-up;)).
Find a place in the sun. (Hint, you'd make a great neighbor:thumbsup:).
Use your rental income to service a mortgage while you freelance for bigger bucks than a "lab rats" pay.

Just my 43 cents. I realize that out-of-harness is too scary for most folks to even contemplate.
The opportunity take still applies, though.
You have time to network.
Good jobs seldom hit the want ads.
Every one of my friends with good positions found them by networking with friends and being available at the right time.

At the very least, you can do as my lab rat friend did in N. Ca.
Just walked into Seaton Hospital and knocked on a few doors, with her resume in hand.
Now she makes double he private lab salary.

No worry, Ms. Attic
"Every little thing gonna be alright"

If anyone EVER gets a lesson in life....it should be from Weezards post. He's absolutely right too......life IS what you make of it. Getting fired as a medical assistant (for being drunk on the job....ahem....lovely reason don't you think?) opened the door for the opportunity to do exactly what I love.......working with animals. One door closes; another ALWAYS opens but you have to be paying attention.

Right on Weezard.

Option A)

Find a new job and keep struggling to make it in this economy

Option B)

Learn what you can about the Republic Of Lakotah movement and help to bring freedom and equality into the picture.

I say screw option A, it's only detrimental to our freedom and even our personal responsibilities.

I'm moving to south dakota with some friends and we're going to establish a self sufficient community of several families, and be free, by our own power.

there are no liberties or privileges when you are truly free. because... you're free!

when your only job is to help people survive, in exchange for that same assistance, you can never lose your job, or your place in the community.

Help us help you help us help you.... :D

there are no liberties or privileges when you are truly free. because... you're free!

What is your definition of freedom? I think you have a pretty skewed vision of reality if you think you'll be free in your self-sustaining community. You'll just be slaves to each other instead of slaves to the man.

Fat Mike once said..

The sad truth is
you'd rather follow the school into the net
'cause swimming alone at sea
is not the kind of freedom that you actually want.

I think many peoples' idea of freedom is a care free environment where everything you want and need is available. Sorry to burst your bubble but that wont happen, not even in your own perfect little society.

which would YOU rather be? a slave without a choice, or a slave BY YOUR CHOICE.

i am free, because i CHOOSE to be a slave to a natural community.

i am a slave, because i did not choose to be a slave to the american nightmare.

Freedom, to me, is the freedom to choose your lifeways. my choice is to move out with my friends and be dependent on them as much as they will be on me, cutting out the middle man completely (money).

My choice of lifeways to live off the land and contribute to a tight knit community, nay a family, is not a choice available in the city.

It's not easy to get out of the city either, it STILL costs money.

Frankly, freedom is not to say carefree living. freedom takes responsibility. however many personal responsibilities are part of law, therefore taking the responsibility away from the person, and granting it to a badge.

No, i am not willing to authorize anyone to hold any responsibility over me. that is not a freedom, that is a prison.

Completely classless. Good thing another mod got to you first. Go piss up a rope, you weird spammer. Have fun with your planned community... my crystal ball sez: Community struggles along until a) its founding members' trust funds run out, or b) its members get sick of the clever little insults sniped at them by its Charismatic Leader. Infighting ensues. A poorly-filmed documentary may or may not be made. It may or may not then be entered in a film festival or be spoofed on South Park.
You ever been to South Dakota? Hope you got a good water source, and bring several dump truck loads of manure, because the soil ain't all that... but what do you care, you're FREE, including FREEEEE to insult people you have never interacted with! Yay!

Weezard, I saw your post right when it went up but didn't have time to reply, and have been thinking about it all weekend. Actually I am putting together a portfolio of my technical writing to hand around at interviews. As for the total life overhaul, actually it is interesting you brought it up. This week I quit my other job too. I walked in and asked for a $2 an hour raise to put me in line with what other bar managers in the area make as base pay, and then when the owner said the economy is too bad for raises, I put in my notice.

I then raised my consulting fee (gas ain't free) and asked my best friend to move into my apartment building to help get some renovations finished, FINALLY. I want to take this time to end projects that have seemed never-ending, and tie up loose ends in my lifestyle. I want my calendar to be less cluttered, and my house too! I want to have time to USE that greenhouse I built in the build-a-long thread last summer~ lol, it sits empty, because I don't have the time to fill it!

I'm glad you guys are along for the ride! Your support is helping so much. I have not been feeling mopey at all!

Yay!

Gold.

hey stinky. just saw/read this thread and my thoughts are mutual with the others. With all the knowledge you possess, I know your new job will present itself soon. But like you said, "I want to take this time to end projects that have seemed never-ending, and tie up loose ends in my lifestyle. I want my calendar to be less cluttered" this would be a perfect opportunity to take a break from an actual job and get things finished! That greenhouse is being very neglected lol. If all else fails, you apply for unemployment and relax for a few months growing with extra tlc and getting all the shit that's piled up done and over with

My mother had a similar situation and was without work for 7 months, but she has no masters or resume that comes close to your's. She's happy at her new job now and never looked better really. SO keep that head up, keep your eyes open. Things will be well again shortly. No worries beautiful. I'm not a faithful man but if he's up there, God Speed :)

mgm

Aww Stinky I think I know how you feel a little bit.. I didnt have a good job and I dont have any of the job-experience that you have and I wish I had, but I lost my job a few months ago then my friend got me kicked out of the place I was living at. All of my stuff, my clothes, all my important documents needed to get a job, every sentimental thing that meant the world to me was either sold or trashed by the crazy lady whos house I was staying at. I was lucky it was still warm when I was living out of my car for a month or two :P But I finally got enough of a job for a few months working out of state to get me a bit caught up. Then as soon as I came back to Columbus, I crashed my car on a wonderful patch of black ice hahaha serendipity eh? At least I have a place to stay, but I hear ya on that damned Craigslist! Every damn job I want and would probably be successful as hell at requires experience I can't prove that I have. My saving grace is that I don't have a mortgage or car payments to worry about (and now I dont even have to worry about insurance haha :P) so that is why my situation isnt so bad. But finding a job is a pain in the ass!

Oddly enough, your resume would get you about every job I wanted here in C-bus :P. Oh well.. I have faith in ya! Good luck and kick ass!

StinkyAttic: Sorry to hear that the bad news continues. I will try to be more helpful reporting things in the future. Hope everything works out well for you. It sounds like you have your hands full. I appreciate reading your posts. I have learned a lot. Thanks.:hippy:

Yeah I've been a mess. I killed the interview and have another tomorrow. I expect an offer by the end of the week, but that it will be low, as it IS in agriculture. Oh well, at least it's a job in these hard times. Now about that pre-employment drug screen I have to take... *sigh...

Here's a pre-employment trick I've used, maybe it will help. Hide clean urine in bottle, cover with big wad of kleenex. As you are entering lab cough and snot on the big wad of kleenex alot. No one has ever asked me to hand them the wad of tissues........:)

You must be new to the boards. We have a drug testing section. You should read the substitution sticky. ;) If you don't have any clean friends, and I doubt you do :D, then buy some QF. I'm sure your attic brings 'em to the good side. If not they're probably depriving themselves. Be something like being good friends with the CEO of Mercedes Benz and turn him down his offer to use the SL for the weekend.

Yeah FBR, I was planning to sub. I don't have any clean friends- ANY, lol- except one guy on probation who takes an antispasmodic that would raise a flag. So I may be asking my dad for a sample, or buying that whizzinator packaged stuff.
My second interview was yesterday and I am expecting a formal offer Monday. Woo hoo! Gonna be a farmer again, baby!

the whizzinator is discontinued due to a lawsuit but if you or someone you know owns one or you can get one on ebay your golden =D

Linear in Stinksters case I doubt she would want to be using the Whizzinator at all.

Yeah just the pee.
Although someone DID suggest I show up with a whizzinator and freak out the observer lady, as well as another who suggested borrowing some pee from a friend who has a script for an amphetamine medication AND smokes pot like a chimney, and then pitching a fit and insisting that the samples got mixed up to buy time. Lol! That's what friends are for... :wtf:
I think I'll stick with plain ol' pee...

Damn its a supervised UA? That sucks.. they dont usually do that for pre-employment screens unless you give up a cold-spec. I paid 40 bucks for synthetic the last job I had and it worked great. I got another batch for whenever I can get a job (hopefully soon! :P)

Glad things are looking up Stinky.

Weezard said it right. I got this from an episode of the simpsons: "Did you know that the Chinese use the same word for 'crisis' as they do for 'opportunity'?" It looks like you're already taking advantage of this by finishing unfinished projects and what not. If there's ever anything you've wanted to do, but couldn't because of your job, consider maybe doing it now.

One thing I learned to do a few years ago has really kept me in high spirits. When something like losing your job happens, I don't let it get me pissed. There are certain things that just happen, you have no control over them and they can't always be undone. So just accept it and move on. The best thing you can do is take action to remedy the situation to get to where you were before. It's also a chance to go in a different direction if you'd prefer.

Also, it's not always worth it to get worked up over some things. I lost an expensive calculator one time. I didn't let it get to me, just figured it means I lost some money, no big deal, I'll have to buy a new one when I can afford it. A couple of my classmates at the time were really confused on why I didn't seem to care. So I told them why I didn't let things like that get me stressed. Well, later that day my friend said he borrowed it but forgot to tell me and gave it back. I could have been in a bad mood all day, but looking back I'm glad I wasn't.

Well anyways, Good luck with the job! I hope you get it. In the case that you don't get it (God forbid), please do me a favor and just get a job. What I mean by that is, if you have bills that need to be paid (and living costs and the like), get something that pays you for work, even if it's being a grocery bagger. You can always search for a more appropriate job while you're doing that. I have a handful of friends who can't get that through their heads. They complain about not having money because they don't have a job. They live with their parents and complain about being bored all day just sitting on their asses. They blame this on the fact that the job market sucks, yet they refuse to go find something, even if it is, or is close to, minimum wage. Something just to get them by while they wait for appropriate job opportunities. ...Well, I probably didn't have to tell you that, and even more probable is that it won't come down to that. I guess I just had to rant about my deadbeat friends lol.

Best of luck Stinky, keep us posted.

Thanks ar15, and nice to see you around. /i agree that the number one priority is staying confident enough to go on with your life as normal, even if you have to pretend it's all falling apart- like the cocky guy getting all the girls at the club, while the sweet perfect smart trekkie guy who happens to be an awesome bassist and a gourmet cook gets no girls because he acts unconifdent. lol. And yeah, having a job at all and especially getting a new one in this economy is super awesome/1
/i can't type much because /i damaged my finger in a gardening accident and part of it is sorta duct-taped together making typing difficult... but I wanted to announce I got an offer! woo hoo! it's low, but still great for teh industry!
/okay I gotta run... see yall soon/1

I missed this when it was first posted. Congratulations on finding something. I think it would be hella fun to work in agriculture. I hate dealing with resumes and interviews and having people move in and out of the house. :( One of my jobs got cut in half back in October and my housemate moved out a week ago. I can really feel for ya. Where can I find this pic of the buds?
Lol, I think you're hot just from your posts on here and the activities you enjoy. Hopefully you will enjoy your new work more than your old. I assume that you will be doing fieldwork and labwork both. That would be great, analyzing samples indoors, checking the effects on the phenotypes out in the fresh air. Just hope you are never asked to put the genes from a porcupine into a tomato. It will be a real killer tomato. Imagine a Critter but with a tomato face. :)

I'm not sure which pic of the buds you are looking for but check in the growing info section, in the general area, there's a 'some cannabis strains' thread that shows part of my collection.
I want a pet tomatomonster. I would never create one though... there are SO MANY adoptable young tomatomonsters, some already house trained, in shelters around the country, *sniff... spay or neuter your pet tomatomonsters!!!!!

How about this one, from the cover of a truly great album? :D

Sorry about the pay--who knows, you will most likely be running that company! Who knows more about growing than you. I wouldn't mind a mini-tomatomonster-cute picture and happy to see you have your genuine sense of humor back. Best of luck to you. It is my hope you are in the same business that we all know you best for! And I hope you don't have to piss for anyone! With any luck, you will make #1 in HT next year!

Is the finger any better? Duct tape, figures-too busy to go to a Dr. Next time, try super glue! Or call the Byrds. Had your tetanus already by now, I hope, if you needed it!

New places, new opportunities and I know you'll keep your eyes open for a better job if this is not the one for you. Obviously, you know more about the industry of agriculture than most in the field. I know a gal that counts water turtles for the Agriculture Dept. and made really good money at it. No doubt, you will wherever you go--they will recognize you great skills!

If you do need some clean pee, don't take it from one of those boxes at the hospital you place you piss in for UTI's-the person before you could have more content than you! I heard of a desperate person that did it. If I could be so lucky to have ALL my friends piss THC!!! You are a lucky woman, no matter what! Just keep the positive in mind! And vent a little more, it is nice to know we aren't alone, especially since, most of us admire your ethics! PR

Thanks painretreat! Good advice all around.
My FINGER is better and I just sliced the everlovin SHIT out of the base of my thumb on the cooling fins on the back of a centrifuge- like radiator fins but smaller and razor-sharp. So now I have two deep gashes that are, of course, duct taped together. HElls yeah, it's like the Force- has a dark side, and a light side, and holds the universe together.
