I've searched everywhere for this answer and come up with nothing every time, which is surprising considering how important the question is.
Can males only release pollen after being put on 12/12? Or can the preflowers themselves release pollen?

Well, here's a different way of putting it. If you were to leave your plants in veg for a significantly long time, how far would the male preflowers develop if you didn't chop them down?

Has anybody ever tried growing a male plant out for a very long time entirely in veg without switching to 12/12?

I am surprised no one has answered this for you....
I have never tried it... so I cannot say... I have never left males after they were sexed and I have never had one show sex (or grow balls) until after put into flower (12/12)..... if you are getting balls before they are put to flower I would guess they are either auto flowering (like low rider is) or they have been majorly stressed. When normal flowering occurs they are not supposed to bust open until they are fully developed and this can be just a matter of days after development. So if they are developing now in preflowering (vegetative) status, then I would expect they could pop open and do what they are supposed to do....

Thanks a lot, that was very helpful. They actually haven't even begun to show preflowers yet. It was just a question I had always wondered about. So to rephrase your answer, I don't have to worry about pollen release until after 12/12?
