I don't know if this goes here and if it doesn't by all means delete it, but I was just wondering from you guys who you thought was worse: Hitler or Stalin? Personally, in spite of the fact that Stalin killed much more people I would still have to go with Hitler. My reasons:

The reason behind killing his victims was worse. For him killing 6 million jews was personal. He hated them and essentially wanted them offed. Now with Stalin, though he killed more people, his reasons for killing all of those people was primarily driven by the fact that he was really paranoid and basically it wasn't personal.

The way he killed his victims was worse. Hitler sent them to a concentration camp and worked the hell out of them and killed them in a slow and cruel manner whereas Stalin, at least for the most part, just had his victims shot.

Hitler's role during WWII. He was the driving force that led to the outbreak of WWII, and yes I know it was France and Britain who sowed the seeds but still....Hitler was the plant. Though Stalin was a bad person at least he helped us out so that has to count for something right?

But you know, in spite of the fact that both were terribly evil beings I would like to say something positive about each. For Stalin he at least helped modernize Russia to a certain extent and for Hitler....well he boosted Germany from economic ruins to one of the most powerful countries in the World...I'm sorry Empire. And he was also a really good artist, at least in his landscape. The reason why he never made it to art school was because at the time abstraction in art was the popular stle rather than realism which was very prominent in his work. Anyway those are my reasons. What do you guys think...Hitler or Stalin?

It's hard to say. If I had to choose, I guess Stalin. Both had a lack of respect for life, Stalin had the higher count.

Well, I have to disagree with letting [Stalin helping us out] count because it was something that was mutually beneficial to him.

But yeah, this one kind of boggles the mind. I usually just think it would have been much better if these two never existed.

Well... im assuming that most members here are some 2 generations after Stalin or Hitler... anyway, this reasoning works for any number of generations.

Think about your parents. How they met, where they lived, what was their life path until they "make" you. They traded a long path... they were adolescents, children, babies... then remember your grandparents. They also lived a lot of things until met and "make" your parents.

Now im supposing that most members grandparents lived in the Hitlers and Stalins days. Imagine that Hitler or Stalin hadnt existed. Surely the world that time wouldve been different, and maybe one of your grandparents would live somewhere else, or to do something else... and probably wouldnt tread the same life path they treaded, and probably wouldnt met the person they married, or even if they met and married, probably they wouldnt have the same children they had, and even if they had, probably this children (your parents) would have lifes completly different than they had, so probably they would never met, never marry, and so you wouldnt be here right now.

So, even if what Hitler and Stalin did was pretty bad, if they hadnt existed most of us (if not all) also wouldnt be here, thinking how the world would have been without them... :stoned:

I don't think you can call what Hitler and Stalin did a necessary evil. That is too far my friend.

Maybe it's the utilitarian in me, but I would gladly give my existence up so millions of people didn't have to die.
