Alright, so let's talk about arguably the most mind-blowing genre for the lucky toker...what are your favourite bands, songs, etc.?
I've always been partial to Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane (check out the avatar), early Pink Floyd (when they had Syd Barrett), Cream, the Doors, late Beatles, Country Joe and the Fish, Love, the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, etc.

Been meaning to listen to some Trower for awhile; thanks. Somebody to Love's a fantastic song, true enough...I just really, really wish more of their songs were in the public consciousness than just that and White Rabbit. I can pretty much guarantee a lot of the stoners on here would get a huge kick out of Good Shepherd, Wooden Ships, ReJoyce, etc. Bless Its Pointed Little Head is one of the greatest live albums I've ever heard, too...every bit as good as the Who live, I'd say.

My favorite has always been CSNY when I'm just sitting around being mellow. But I really love any of the southern rock,Allman,Lynrd,Outlaws.Blackfoot. So much good stuff from the 60's and 70's.
Listen to Dr Dog. They're a great band from philly. Their album we all belong is especially good and fate has some great songs too. Songs I suggest you check out: The old days, the ark, army of ancients, alaska, way the lazy do, worst trip, my old ways. Many more good songs too. I think they sound like the modern day beatles. â?? That's because "psychedelic rock" is so limited as a definition and is dead as a genre. No one can make true psychedelic (acid rock is a better term) anymore. Besides refering to simply acid-rock bands, you limit the replies because psychedelic music covers other genres like stoner rock, shoegaze, lo-fi, post-rock, trip-hop etc.

Grateful Dead.. Any good Soundboard tapes from 69-74.. The Darkstars and Jams from these years are varied and some incredible versions... Live Dead is the best store bought example from that era...IMO this is some of the most underappreciated psychedelic rock.. Too much of the commercial crap is what people think Psychedelic Rock(Acid Rock) is ... Two cents.. Peace .dlj

I know the genre's dead, but enough was recorded while it was alive to keep me happy forever.
By all means name your favourite post-rock, trip-hop, etc., artists. I simply named the ones I enjoy, which do not include any of that sort of thing.

As one music lover to another, I challenge you to listen to some albums that I'll list. I guarantee you one of these albums in this list will blow your mind and are psychedelic in it's own way. it all depends on your curiosity and what you like in general. I know because the majority of your most played list at one time or another, I was extremely fond of and you'll be able to appreciate an album that is conceptual and furfilling.
So here's the menu:
Freak Folk
Devandra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Lo-fi
Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Neo-psychedelia
Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
Noise Rock
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Post-Rock
Explosions In The Sky - How Strange, Innocence
Psytrance
Shpongle - Tales Of The Inexpressible
Space Rock
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump
Trip-hop
Massive Attack - Mezzanine

Alright, "In An Airplane Over the Sea" blew my mind quite nicely--I can see how the rest would, too, but it's just not to my taste so much--although The Soft Bulletin was pretty great.

the genre's not dead, I gave you a perfectly good example of modern psychedelic rock. You just gotta stop living in the past and wise up to the underground music scene. Most of those bands you listed as psychedelic rock bands are also pop music from prior decades. You wont find much psychedelic rock in the pop music category any more.
Im telling you, check out Dr. Dog...also if you have time and are not afraid of new things check out My Morning Jacket...their album "Z" is great.

When I said it was dead I meant that it is dead as a respected genre that reaches the people and enjoys the popularity that it used to...I like quite a bit of modern underground/indie stuff, but for the most part, musically I live in the past because that's when quality music actually affected the cultural landscape, instead of being relegated to arcane status while the masses dine on mindless assembly-line pop. I get a lot of shit for living mostly in the past, but I say who does it hurt? I'll listen to what I want to and other people can enjoy the same liberty.
And no, I'm not inherently afraid of new things...that was a little offensive. I've heard some Dr. Dog, and they're pretty great.

Dr Dog isn't true psychedelic in my opinion, they have a neo-psychedelic style. The pureness of acid rock, not many bands are doing it anymore.
But I completely agree with 40oz in regards that there's so much good, psychedelic-like, 60s based music coming out these days:
Delta Spirit - Ode To Sunshine
War On Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues
Two amazing albums that are complete throwbacks of the 60s, but pushing musical limits, Delta Spirit with their perfect blend of northern and southern rock, War on Drugs pushing the limits towards ambient rock while sounding bob dylanesque. In my opinion, those are the two best albums of 2008.

Yeah, true psychedelic/acid rock is indeed rare nowadays, hence my avid listening of pre-1970 gems. I live in the past and I'm proud of it.

for some reason i take personal offence to that statement. Dont hate on electronica. Theres alot of electronica thats way more psychedelic than your deffinition of psychedelic or acid rock. Before i saw that post i thought you were just a new wave hippy and i was cool with that but then you had to go bashin defenceless music. I feel its my duty to pull you up on your ignorance.

I'm sorry; I just tend to prefer my music created by human hands playing strings or hitting percussion, not technological tinkering. Yeah, I'm aware that there is great skill involved, but it can't really be compared to creating it by hand. It's like comparing pushing some buttons to detonate a bomb (however complex) to defeating a rival sword to sword.
I seem to recall your finding Zeppelin to be overrated? Forgive me, but I think we're just on very different wavelengths.

Not necessarily, a trance band like Wild Marmalade does all their stuff with hands, a couple of drummers and a didgeridoo. but if there's anyone to recommend psychedelic music, it's Metaphor, dude listens to some extremely trippy shit and he'd be a dude to recommend some real blow-your-mind psychedelic music since I tend to like a more poppy style than he prefers. He always got good shit to offer, speaking of which, Metaphor, you come back but don't name-drop. Bleh.

If they play their own instruments, kudos. I'm just really, really not into post-rock or shoegaze or any of that, and I'm of the belief that a Zeppelin hater is unlikely to recommend anything I'd like, since for me they're the epitome of music and all that is great about it. I also disliked the reference made to my "ignorance", which I take to here mean a differing opinion that can't be accepted.

I kinda hate Led Zeppelin too, not for any they done musically because 3 of the members Jimmy, John Paul Jones and John Bohman are great at what they do. It's simply because of a bad experience on another drug which I won't mention. If some guy put black dog for the first 7 seconds, then repeat it again and again all night long in that state of mind, I think you'd hate them too! Up to that day I listened to Led Zeppelin everyday. After that day, everytime I hear one of their songs, I cringe at the screams of Robert Plant, to me he sounds like the devil getting castrated.
I agree with much which what Metaphors feels, not all but much. it isn't about being an elitiest and not accepting other peoples taste. It's about expanding what's beyond your comfort zone and accepting more than just what I refer to as a introductory bands, basic bread and butter, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. They're amazing for a reason, but that's something I felt it's been overplayed far too many times in my lifetime and out there, there's so much more and I crave for it. I love different music too much to solely stick to bread and butter, it's always great to fall back upon, but I don't think music exploration should end there.

Good points (but Plant rocks), but it's really not for anyone to tell anybody else what to listen to. I agree that musical exploration is a good idea, but it's none of my business if somebody only wants to listen to a single band. It does no harm to anybody else. I'd love to see everybody read Rimbaud's poetry, but most people just don't want to and I have no right to force them. I adhere to my tastes and if I don't like something, for whatever reason (justification is not required), I'm not going to listen to it for the sake of expansion. And please, I don't just listen to "bread and butter." I mean, who's heard of Country Joe and the Fish nowadays, let alone has heard all their albums?
And if instruments aren't being played, I'm not having any of it. Some call that narrow-mindedness; I call it obeying one's tastes, for one's own reasons.

Good points as well. I heard of Country Joe and the Fish but I realized I never heard one of their songs or at least recognize them. So I'm d/ling some of their stuff. I can't say anything haha.
You can't force anyone, some people are set in their ways and nothing anyone says can change that. In my case, if someone is like hey, this album is goddamn amazing you should listen to it, I most likely will because if it truly impacted them in some emotional way, surely you want to hear what it is all about.
Nor am I suggesting you only listening to bread and butter bands. IMO, you are open-minded about music and I'd never suggest to be any kind of snob when it comes to music. There's simply so many different styles that provoke different emotions, so many choices that you can't possibly digest it all and have protectionism over the choices you do digest. It's completely natural.
it's simply that most of the music that ended up being my favorites were suggested by other people. If their tastes match mine in some way, I'm going to highly value their input. Music exploration has to go at your own pace, centered around yourself, one genre of music provoke different emotions from person to person.

Yeah man Country Joe and The Fish is pretty good, listening to the album I Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die.
The first song, The Fish Cheer, I couldn't help to think of Les Claypool, the style of the voice and delivery of the lyrics. It's a trippy song. I like how their style has these diverse variations from song to song, and it's quite dreamy, drew from a variety of southern influences and mixed it together perfectly with the acid rock movement of the time. The delivery is like a pendilum swinging between sweetness and powerful, optimism and melancholy and it's quite beautiful. Rock Coast Blues is such a sweet track as well as Thursday. I'm a sucker for those wispy guitars.
Touche. It sounds like a deep, beautiful concept album, an enlightening listen.

THE classic psychedelic album of the 60's, released in 1967, is Electric Music For the Mind and Body, the first album by Country Joe and the Fish. It was recorded and "tested" under the correct conditions by the band, and guaranteed to bring about the desired results.
I do not have the CD, released 1990, which is currently available, because the sound quality is mediocre. I have a decent vinyl reissue. Hopefully, they'll get around to doing a better remastering job for a fresh digital release of the album.
