What is its purpose? do I need one?

1. It depends on your reflector housing. To use a lens on a 600 watt reflector housing: you would have to suck hot air out one side of the housing and blow cool air in from the other side of the housing...to cool the bulb.
The advantage being: you could get closer to the canopy.

2. You lose some lumens with a lens. I don't use one. I just keep a fan blowing cool, fresh air; between the canopy and the light bulb and try and hold the temps at 78 degrees...+ or - 5 degrees in this zone.
