Lookin to start in an attic.

Here's some more info

-Space is short (light would hang to about 4-1/2 ft from ground).
-6x7 (can be bigger or smaller)
-Want to soil grow (apprx. 8-12 plants)
-Clone/veg chamber is already functioning
-Lookin at 600-1000 hps (scared 1000 in such a short space will cause burnage!)
-Considering SOG, SCROG, and/or LST experimentation
-Temperature and Ventilation taken care of

What ideas do you guys have for the space?

How many plants could I grow (max)?

Should I be too worried about the height?

Any attic problems I should be aware of? Solutions?

Thx for the knowledge
pics to come after construction complete

when i tryed an attic grow the only things came to mind was the need for an air conditioner up there and that u gotto keep the spiders off them

My veg room is 6x7x7 and it has 2 1000w MH with air cooled hoods heat is not a problem unless it's the middle of summer and over 90 outside. For me I have an 8000-btu window AC unit so the extra heat in no big deal. If you have good air in and air out. Use air-cooled hoods with glass you should be fine. I run 12 to 20 at all times in the veg room so your number should be good to.

Peace

thx spec and zandor.

The ac is run through the attic so I'm thinking about venting off that. There are 2 vents going out the top, so I can circulate heat/smell out the roof with some help from fans. Plus another oscilating fan inside to keep their leaves movin'

(I'd rather be in a basement...)

Spiders... not a problem; friend of an exterminator (he'll take care of that)

Keeping height in mind. what's the best way to keep these bitches short?

FLower early and grow more plants... use one gallon pots if you insist on using soil.. Keep a fan blowing between your lights and your plants (important).. Don't let the plants go over 12 inches tall in veg state.... they will double to triple in size when you flower...

good luck and post PICS!!!

Build a carbon scrubber to vent your exhaust through or if you have room use it as a whole room scrubber. 6 pounds of active charcoal and 4 furnace filters in a box with just a fart fan is all you need.

Garden Knowm - What if I wasn't insisting on soil? I've never used hydro in my grows; is there a simple "Start-up" hydro method?

I've looked around at hydro systems, but there are so many different types! I research for a while then give up because I can't decide.

Anybody out there know the best hydro system for a hydro-newbie?

Zandor -- That's crazy, you described a carbon scrubber this guy i know uses in his room! He swears by it.
thanks again guys

I would say the DWC buckets are the easy ones to build and make. You could even just use a rubbermaid tub and put some nest pots in the lid. There are a few down sides to those.

How many plants do want to grow?

Hoping to grow 8-12. But could be more or less depending on set up. (hoping to get on a continuous rotation of a .5-1 lb/month or two)

Any sites to get more info on DWC buckets?

DWC is the way to go, Here is a pic of a clone in a DWC bucket, 2 weeks after it sprouted roots.

The rubbermaid tub style works great too, I have some 10 gal. tubs that I put 3 plants in. Use 3" net cups and a 2 7/8 hole saw to make a perfect fit in the lid. 1 air pump from wallmart for $9.95 and two 5" air stones. That's all you need, besides the plants, and nutes...

Be sure to keep the PH under control, begining ppm~350, and you MUST light proof the tub. I use aluminum foil and duct tape to light proof, dull side out, duct tape must be 3 layers thick, failure to light proof will end up killing your plants, it is VERY important.

Well I guess I rambled on a bit more than I intended, but that's my advice on running a sucessful DWC grow.

Hope this helps...

With a light hanging at 4-1/2 ft, should I grow an indica or sativa strain?
I'm seeing the strain "lowrider" mentioned quite often on this forum for small setups, but can't find a pic to check it out. Anyone got a pic of this strain?

How difficult is it to maintain a DWC setup?

Well for something like that you should consider how you time the grow cycle. You will need a vegetation room a flower room and a cloning area.

Timetable to use for all the strains you can grow like this, some are shorter but this is the max (with in a few dayâ??s either way)

Flower â?? 45 â?? 60 dayâ??s total
Clones â?? 21 dayâ??s
Vegetation â?? 30 â?? 45 dayâ??s

You take clones a day or so before you move from Vegetation to flower.
Use an aero-clone that can hold up to plenty of clones. Most of the time you can sell or trade the ones you donâ??t use.
The best 16 clones make it into the vegetation room. Of those 16 the best 12 make it into the flower room (again trade or sell the others you donâ??t use)

Everything is done in KBS style of growing with 10,000-btu AC unit each room, co2 each room; A CAP controller to watch everything, top & bottom lighting (well mid lighting anyway) in the flower room, top air-cooled MH in the vegetation room and a fogger for the flower room to keep the RH high.

Room sizeâ?¦.Flower 7x7x7 Mylar on all walls, ceiling and the door. White plastic wallboard on the floor to keep everything clean. The Vegetation room is 6x7x7 with Mylar and wallboard on the floor. You can clone in a closet lined with Mylar. Use duel flourex lights under one batwing will provide plenty of light and keep temperatures down so the leafs donâ??t dry out before they get a chance to root.

It takeâ??s about one year and ½ to get everything up and balanced out and get a good cycle going. You could even have time for a good cleaning after each cycle too.

The 12 finished flowering plants each will produce 1.5 pounds, sometime more (Kush is great grown like this) so every 66 dayâ??s there is a crop around 18 pounds to enjoy.

All it takes in money, time and lots of work for a grow like thisâ?¦.but it does work.

Yup, what he said DWC is incredibly easy. All you have to have is a few 5 gal buckets some air stones, aquarium compressor, and tubing, a little hydroton and some net pots. and of course nutes and plants.
the only thing you might want to consider is hauling H20 up to the attic, you'll be surprised at how fast the plants suck up the water.
Good luck,
NH
There are some old farmers out here who started growing MJ when they couldn't make the farm work with conventional crops. For stealth they would bend the plant completely over and stake chicken wire over it (a modified version of scrog) the plant would esentially grow horizontally along the ground I haven't tried it but it seemed to be pretty successful. If height is limited you might try something like this.

Thx nosehit.... I like the redneck version of scrogging. I have a redneck buddy that will probably find that useful and sort of relieving.
