Here is to President Barack Obama :pipe:

Congratulations to all of his supporters. I sure hope he remains true to himself, his promises and all those who voted for him.

latest electoral numbers suggest a 2:1 win. (333-155 CNN - 334-157 RCP - foxnews map is not loading any data for some reason)

and I think McCain gave the best speech of his campaign. Why couldnt have he stayed this john mccain all this time... [funny, people still bood obama's name]

I just witnessed one of the greatest moments of the American and world's history for years to come, and just this fact makes me feel really good.

But I'm really glad that this campaign is over, i for one could not take it anymore!

we can now only wait and hope, to see how he does his job.

peace out!:rastasmoke:

Well... i already had felt that it would happen, even before i posted this, exactly five months ago, at June 5th:

I believe Obama will win and will be the next usa president.
(from http://boards.cannabis.com/politics/156369-obama-clinches-nomination-plans-celebration-2.html#post1864523)

And since then ive been just waiting for the day i would bring this post back and do exactly what im doing right now.
Now the day has come. And im not glad that he won (but would be yet less glad if the winner were McCain), cause it shows the end is near...
Yes... 2008 was a strange year indeed... and its not over yet!

God can we stop talking about this already. Ive had enough. was it sen. Douchebag or sen. Turd Sandwich. who cares same feaking team! More importantly America spoke tonight. Did anyone even notice that they kept the senate and the house. Thats America speaking loudly to me saying they had enough of the Bush era and would do anything to get out of it. ANYTHING!

Wow I'm speechless.

Hell yea. I've watched the polls day after day, and even though it was clear that Obama SHOULD win (as in the clear majority of voters wanted him to win), I just haven't been able to shake the sense of dread that somehow this election would still be stolen. But it didn't happen. We won. Obama won. America won. The nightmare that we've lived under for the last eight years is nearly over, and we have a chance to build a better future. This was the single most important and historic election that any of us are ever likely to be part of in our lifetimes, and yet the shock that it has actually happened leaves me feeling numb and shocked - Maybe by tomorrow it will really sink in, but right now I'm just trying to process the fact that it's finally over.

Here's to the next eight years! :)

4 undecided seats left for senate, 56 vs 40 for dems, and if that 4 go for dems which i totally dont think they will, this will be a massive win in many years for left....

but im just happy about the 3 good news i got, one for obama and 2 for pro marijuana ballots that got a YES!

But the good news is that they and their children will still benefit from the rebuilding of our nation, even if they have to be drug along kicking and screaming the whole way.

America has Spoken very clearly

this is Rush Limbaugh's last words before tonight's outcome
Ignore the Exit Polls and Go Vote! (http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_110408/content/01125106.guest.html)

This was not by any means a 'close' win as some would have imagined

so far its near 52% - 47% and I would guess it will get more distant on popular vote once all votes are counted. more like 60-40. on electoral votes, well numbers speak of a 2 to 1 win, even a bit higher! its almost a 340 to 160

Oh "YES WE DID" and YES WE CAN
there is a shit ton of work to be done now and i hope the next admin and congress can deal with it far far better than the previous one

Yet, with that reply, you give evidence in the undertone of the statement that you, indeed, are atleast slightly racist. (Why? Because the comment you are replying to was rather light-hearted in nature, yet you still felt the urge to reply with negative energy. Even in using the term double standard, without any basis for assuming any poster here abides by so-called "standards", a guilty and defensive conscience is also implied.)

Of course, I'm not saying my words are gold, either. This is just speculation based on your general attitude displayed on a few of your posts regarding this subject. No offense if I'm way off.

Either way, the cannabis community had it's share of victory tonight, with the passing of the two bills aforementioned. I expect a number of new mmj bills to be presented soon... will they pass? Who knows. But imo, cannabis will not be rescheduled until the majority of our nation's states have decriminalization laws in place... Or if the older, less experienced with marijuana folks in congress die and get replaced with someone with a more positive attitude to the subject. We shall tread on...

Of course not, but that statement can be accepted as truth by me (in terms of the celebration). Sure, it's slightly racist, but segregation wasn't that long ago. I mean, it's only been a matter of hours since this country has breached that race barrier, so of course many black citizens will be in good spirits, knowing how much less race matters now. How could a white person fathom what a black person could be feeling tonight? Said caucasian wouldn't be able to fully understand, as they wouldn't have been exposed to the same type of discrimination in their lives.

It sure was one hell of a ride, and even though I think he's been bought off by the banking interests that run the country, I hope President Barack Obama will have the guts to tell them to go fuck themselves.

I humbly suggest you guys stop complaining about how the election went down. The American people have spoken, and the majority wants Barack Obama.

Instead of tearing him down, you should hope what he does as president is as historically amazing as his election was.

I'm really happy about this win. I think Obama is going to be a good president, and I think he has the potential to be a GREAT president. I think he has the right priorities, and the judgemnt, temperment, character and charisma to carry them out.

Obama gave a great acceptance speach tonight. As some of the commentators mentioned, it wasn't all about himself as they so often are, "I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. I, I, I...." It was about what WE as a country are going to do, and it was realistic about the challenges WE face. I think he is the right leader for this time and he is going to lead US in what WE need to do.

And I thought that McCain's concession speach was one of the best speaches he has given all year. When I saw it, I thought, Now THAT is the McCain a person could VOTE for. Where has he been for the election? I used to like him, but he turned into a hatemongering, xenophobe for the past several months, and I was actually disgusted by him and his campaign. Then as soon as he lost, it was like the old McCain I used to admire was back to concede the race. Wierd. If he had been true to himself the whole way through, he might have won it.

Don't bother, the hardcore's who hated on Obama for the race will just hate him even more now, especially since it was a 2:1 win. No one likes getting beat that badly, lol. Although in McCain's defense, the popular vote was pretty much razor close; he just didn't do nearly the work he needed to do in the bigger states.

What is this? the who is racist spanish inquisition?

This election is a demonstration of the raw power of the main stream media. Obama was a mere 2 year senator with just a few months of being on the job, if you subtracted all the vacations and time-off they have. Well he wouldn't have been shown the time of day if he was white.

There are going to be some hard feelings for awhile, but hopefully people will come around to the idea of at least giving the guy a chance. We have some very serious problems in this country, and instead of just fighting over who is going to get credit and blame, and who will be SEEN as right or wrong, we need to work together and IMMEDIATELY get down to business.

And Republicans who are angry about losing the Presidency and even more seats in the House and Senate need to take a good look inside at their own party and not try to look for blame outside it. Forget lashing out and laying blame. Forget calling names and sabotaging progress. Do a little soul searching. Figure out why it is that their party lost touch with the mainstream to such a degree that the voters have completely stripped them of all power. Republicans held the presidency and both houses only 8 years ago, and now they have lost all of that in a complete reversal. They need to figure out why, fix it, and then come back when they are ready. In the meantime, they need to accept that the voters have spoken.

Well congratulations to the winner, I am glad it's all over and TV here in the Scotland can get back to normal, the amount of coverage given to the US election over here has been staggering perhaps now we can get coverage of an extremely important by election that is happening in Scotland this week.
I don't suppose anyone over on your side has heard of Glenrothes or its election but hopefully the result will be another step towards Scottish independence.
Good luck to your new president although I have a feeling that buying him a Christmas present might be a waste of money.

Next, a big congrads to Obama. I didn't think that he would win but what the hell. NOW my friends from the left the question is this: how long till we get free health care, college funding and marijuana laws changed?

I hope I am never sick or never get injured, this new healthcare is going to SUCK!!!

Is that because your current system is so great? Because it will take years to get socialised healthcare into place and even then, no one is forcing you to use it. I am sure that if you have such fantastic private coverage you can feel free to keep it. For the 40-50 million Americans with no healthcare coverage, I am sure they will take the SUCK healthcare over nothing. It will be an imperfect system, like it is everywhere else in the world, but I for one very much appreciate having the the National Health Service in Britain. I hope it works out in the US. A civilised nation shouldn't have people carrying on without basic health care. I think it's a fantastic step forward for the US.

But this is veering off the topic a ways.

Recipe for pleasing everyone:

Tribalism/Community Nationality/Village governance

If every community were free to their own local absolute law, there would be infinite possibilities.

a community where it is illegal to grow hemp could be neighbors with a community where it is manditory.

THAT IS FREEDOM.

We cannot have freedom in a system such as that which is established in america.

Haha, the bitterness is palpable. Obama is a centrist, not a communist. He will return taxes to where they were during the Clinton years. Stop listening to Hannity and Rush.

Congrats America. The world is on your side again. Have a great party! :D:D:D

YAY AMERICA! there was way more excitement about the US election in vancouver than the canadian federal election a few weeks ago...there is a general feeling that america will be turning a corner or two...BUT it wasn't really a landslide for obama...i don't know exactly what the popular vote was but i think votes for mccain were pretty close to votes for obama (48% voted for mccain? that's amazing!)

to the poster who questioned obama's foreign policy plans:

obama is going to *gradually* pull troops out of iraq...iraq's government congratulated obama, and said that they were optimistic that obama was someone with whom they could form a partnership (which they apparently don't have with the current president)

obama is going to double the troops in afghanistan...the taliban have suggested that obama is someone with whom they could negotiate...WOW! imagine a president that could end a war with words...i hope that is possible

he's got to close guantanamo and it's kangaroo court...everyday that shithole remains open is a stain on america...he's also got to close the US concentration camp in iraq ASAP, and recriminalize torture/kidnapping...there is so much for obama to undo before he can even start doing things...he woke up this morning with the responsibility to change the world on his shoulders...that's a hard task (not made any easier by the current guy in the white house)

Right on Reap, the election is over, but now our job as concerned citizens is to write our new congresspeople and tell them EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT!

If there is an issue that you care about, now is the time to focus on it and educate your elected officials, EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T VOTE FOR THEM, on what the right thing to do is. Leave the partisanship for the next round of elections and focus on cooperation until then. That's how shit gets accomplished!

Very well said sir. sadly I couldn't, but u need a positive rep 4 this
I wish all of us could think and act this way, choice is not what matters, how it's made is the main thing. on what basis.

and the re-action to the opposite choice which has one is another important matter. i'm totally with u on a group of people (I wouldn't say all dems or libs, there are always the good folks among both parties) who kept finger pointing. i just hate that, no matter who does it. no matter how factual they might have been, blaming wont do any good in reality

It would be absurd to say all who didnt vote for Obama are "haters".
all of this said, i still think there are a tiny group of "haters" out there.
Those who will now talk divisive, those who will now defy even their own defeated candidate's words and his call for unity and acceptance and cooperation for an even greater America.

there is always a tiny minority in both sides that just cant to think any further than extremist party loyalty, extremist self-centrism.

I truly hope obama can reach across the isle and do what he has promised, which is to unite this country and kill the divisive politics that we've seen for too long. Difference shouldn't mean division, hell that way, no marriage should take place, cuz no two people in the world are found to have no differences of ideas at all.

I'm very excited to see where our country will go from here. McCain had a very respectfull speach, I just wish more of his supporters could act the same way. If he would have been that way through his entire campaign, I might have even supported him.

hells yeah Obama! Even if we ignore the milestone of America putting aside their racial differences and voting in (well...letting the electoral college vote in for us, but that's a whole other annoyance) our first African American president i have to say: Hells yeah!
And here's why, assuming he keeps his campaign promises;
-Universal healthcare: fuck ya-yeah, 'bout time we caught up with some of the other "civilized" countries...and i need health insurance damnit! hahaha
-Putting taxes back where they were before Bush decided to gives all his buddies a break: the rich are rich enough, they don't need coupons i can't get ("coupons" is an analogy, keep up with me here, hahaha)
-Withdrawing from Iraq: finally we can focus on getting the terrorist douchebags that attacked us 6 years ago instead of "nobody beats up my dad and gets away with it!"
- Aaaaaaanannd (if he'll finally give a straight answer on this now that he doesn't have to worry about offending one side or the other) marijuana decriminalization! do i really need to say anything more about that in a place like this?

But for all the McCain supporters still sulking and crying foul out there, let me drop my favorite analogy about this election thus far:
If Bush was a happy meal, then McCain's a big mac. The big mac may be a step up, but it's still fast food. Order a steak, support Obama.

The McCain campaign and the right-wing media, like Rush and Hannity, made a lot of the idea that Obama is a radical leftist. I never got that from him myself, and it will be interesting to see how he governs. Will he go to the left or be more of a centrist? Will he claim a leftist mandate?

Bush made a lot of his imaginary "mandate," and it turned out he was not a "uniter, not a divider," like he said he was. He had power, but not a real mandate. His idea of bipartisanship was to invite the other side to vote for his bills exactly the way he wanted them, not to compromise, and if they didn't like it, he shoved them down their throats with his majorities in Congress. I think that attitude is partly how Bush destroyed the Republican party.

I have a feeling Obama will be a lot more of a centrist than people think, certainly a lot more centrist than Bush was. This was a pretty decisive Democratic victory, but a lot of the Democratic gains in the House and Senate came from conservative areas of the country, and unless the Democrats want to experience the same backlash the Republicans just experienced, they are going to have to have some discipline and govern as centrists.

Most of the people of this country are centrists. The Republicans lost sight of what the people want, and they used their power to govern too far to the right on many issues, despite having no mandate to do so. I think Obama is smart enough and also charismatic enough to keep the Democrats from abusing their power the way the Republicans did.

The other thing for Democrats is that they are now going to have to put up or shut up with solutions that really do work, or they will get tossed out next round. Ideology is one thing, but it doesn't always really WORK in the real world. With the kinds of problems we have right now, if you don't offer real solutions that work, people are not going to take it, no matter how ideologically "pure" your programs are.

One thing I expect to happen, and it's something I really look forward to, is that I think Obama is really going to call on people to SERVE in the national interest. I think people are ready for that. I think people want to be called to do more than just shop and spend and keep the economy moving. Obama's opponents made a lot of fun of his record as a community organizer, but I really think that his community organizing experience is what won him the election. I had registerd at his website and made a donation, and you would not imagine the opportunities offered to be involved. It is a very sophistcated organization and network that communicates and organizes through a lot of different channels, and that is not going away just becasue the election is over. Reagan had similar networks of motivated supporters in the days of snail mail and landline telephones. Imagine that same network in this era of email, cell phones, and text messages. This is going to be very interesting. I think he will be able to get popular support behind any agenda he wants to push, and I also expect he will call people to serve outside of that kind of role as well --- direct service to communities and to the nation to get things done.

JakeMartinez

I agree. He leans a little left, but he's not a full-blown socialist and definitely not a communist so I think he'll end up leading around the center, though with a few leftist leans.

And to everyone complaining about socialism and ruining the country...Neo-conservativism has been in power since Ronald Reagan took office, with only a couple of short breaks.

The fact that we're not completely crippled as a nation is due mostly to globalization of corporations, methinks (ugh).

This election proves the ideas of trickle-down economics, expanding government while lowering taxes, and other neo-con ideas are outdated and no longer desired by the majority.

Just give the liberals a chance, just one.

If only so you can reform your party :)

"I think he will be able to get popular support behind any agenda he wants to push, and I also expect he will call people to serve outside of that kind of role as well."

- that's a good definition of leadership, and something that has been sorely lacking in the current administration...obama is smart, so smart people will be attracted to him, and he will choose smart advisors...obama is articulate, so he will be able to explain his policies and plans to americans and the rest of the world...obama is inspiring, so people will be inspired to put their effort behind his policies...this is especially important now because americans are facing some difficult choices, and effective leadership will help them make the right choices, even if it means making sacrifices...bush's leadership was more like "it's my way or the highway, and if that bothers you, here are some tax cuts and stimulus checks to take your mind off things"...now the money is all gone, and americans must be asking themselves how they let things go so wrong

i remember how america was so excited about change when bill clinton took office...it didn't go as well as hoped, but clinton didn't have the same *immediate* easy choices or the same majorities in both houses that obama will have in his first 100 days...it should be one of the most momentous 100 days of any new presidency in history...after that, i don't know how well he will do...the challenges america faces are daunting

god bless america!!
