I know people either use those rocky things or those spongy things, or both, but i can't remember the names of them.

Rockwool is the spongy thing and Hydrotron is the clay rocks.

Use the rocky things ( hydrotron ). Rockwool can hold too much water.
If you can't get that use lava rock for gas grills. Just bust it up some with a hammer and wash it out good.

If you use Rockwool soak it in the correct PH water overnight then let the water drain out before use.
I used water at a PH of 5.5 to 5.8 for NFT.

I posted this weight thing in another thread somewhere, it has been totally useful to me. the 'proper' weight for rockwool what moist is about 30 or 35g. any heavier than that i just soaked and will cause rot...UNLESS you are in a dwc with an air pump and stones. if the water is highly oxygenated the rockwool can technically sit right in it.

Weedhound , I remember the read till your eyes bleed days and then you know what to ask for help with or you get not much. LOL

I did hydro much light anything else, research and please don't listen to some old pot head that said he used to do it. Get it from some one who has the money shot of thier goods. I followed grow threads for 3 months to see how it turned out before I started.
