View Full Version : coconut oil extract didn't work at all

Here are the steps I took, akin to that of the cannabis capsule recipe:
I powdered my weed (1 gram) in a coffee grinder (although it wasn't any finer grain than it would have been if I just used a hand grinder, the weed is too sticky).
I preheated my crock-pot to its "high" setting, and the thermometer in it said it was at 255*F, although this was with the thermometer poking out of the lid, because it didn't quite fit, so it might be a little under the actual temperature.
I melted 2 teaspoons of coconut oil (more than the recipe calls for, just to be sure) in an empty aluminum altoids tin.
Once the coconut oil melted, I dumped in the ground 1 gram of weed and stirred it around until it was all nice and oily, and then covered this tin with the lid, and then placed it back in the crock pot on 'high'.
Every 30 minutes I would take the tin out, stir it around with a toothpick, and then gently shake it to evenly disperse its contents about its surface.
After 2.5 hours, I turned the crock pot off, and then fell asleep with the tin in a cooling crock pot.
In the morning, I put the tin in the freezer to solidify the oil
Once the oil was solid, i broke it into chunks and consumed the entire mass, all 1 gram of weed. I also consumed a cookie, to tell my stomach to digest things.
After 3 hours of wating, there were no noticeable effects at all, so I decided to finally eat a meal. This very same weed gets me pretty stoned when I smoke a tenth of a gram, so I'm wondering, what the hell did I do wrong? I've made firecrackers with that same amount of weed (although I think at 320F not 250F), and they worked MUCH better. I figured the coconut oil would be more efficient.

I've never tried the coconut recipe. But it looks like you might of cooked it too long and cooked the thc out of it. I don't cook mine in oil for more than 20 minutes on a very low simmer.

I dont understand, how can I "cook the thc out of it" if I never go above vaporization temperature? Am I to understand there is some other chemical reaction that occurs to THC below 390*F?
Even if I did manage to vaporize the THC, I had all the weed in a small, closed altoids tin, so it would simply circulate around until it condensed back onto the walls of the tin.
Also, I am using a slow cooker, so I can't get it hot enough to make the oil simmer.
Thank you for your reply~:hippy:

I've read where during cooking the thc starts to degrade at temps above 250. Particularly if its cooked for a long time. There's no reason to have a high temp during oil cooking a low simmering cook will do just as well. All you really need is get it warm enough to mix well with the oil and then its ready. Cooking it longer doesn't help anything and justs results in less potency.

So what temp, and how long?

Moeburn there seems to be a crowd that just does NOT get high off this kind of thing. It seems to include Opie Yutts who has tried EVERYTHING but the kitchen sink in his recipes. If you are interested, search for both Flame on's and our Cannabis capsule thread......they both tell you how to go about it and I can honestly say I"VE TRIED a HUNDRED WAYS TO COOK THIS stuff. This was the best way I found....but not the ONLY way.
And ps......I've cooked the stuff up to 350-375 and still gotten a good buzz off things

Have you tried the old fashioned method of just frying it in a pan? I used to do this and got a pretty good buzz.......but honeslty NOTHING like the capsules we make now at lower temps.
And I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the post that says cooking it longer, even at lower temps, does not help. I've tried ALL SORTS of different times in cooking and I like at least four hours in the crockpot at 225-250F although I won't sob if gets above 250.....but would keep in under 300F for sure......unless you are frying it

I never know if these things get me high or not. I always make them, eat them, smoke like 8gs of some weed with a few buddies, drink, play poker and become so smashed i never can tell if they worked in the first place. I simmer it on a stove top for 20 min on low heat like its said but idk...i made brownies on 420 and THOSE WORKED. I was high for 2 days straight and it was amazing so i guess i'm just bummed its not working THAT well...w/e lol.

I've used the exact same amount of weed in a firecracker and it got me stoned, so why didn't the oil? weird. what do you suggest i do? My slow cooker doesn't get hot enough to cook the firecrackers.

you are not trying to vaporize the THC, it is an extraction and has to do with chemical attractions at a molecular level. The THC will be freed from its plant-prison and attracted to the oil you are using, heat simply acts as a catalyst for this reaction, so don't make it too hot or you will destroy the THC completely.
p.s. i am so high right now!!!

when the hell did I say I was trying to vaporize the THC? i'm not that retarded! someone said that i was vaporizing it by accident while trying to extract it. sheesh.
dont post while high!

Man... i think its asking too much... here is cannabis.com! lol! :stoned:
Anyway... the weed you used in this (failed) extraction was pre-cooked?
If it wasnt, maybe thats why it didnt work.
