Opium-stuffed grill lands 2 Fairfax men in custody

Two Fairfax men are being held in federal prison without bail after British customs officials intercepted a package containing 33 pounds of opium stuffed into the legs of a barbecue grill, federal officials said in court records.

The package was sent from Iran to ??Mikhaila Seidow,? later identified as Mikhail Seidov, who is now behind bars with Khiabani Eskanddani, records show.

The two were arrested by federal agents when they arrived to pick up the package at Dulles International Airport??s British Airways loading dock on Oct. 15. Judge Thomas Rawles Jones of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia ordered the two be held without bail Tuesday.

The package was intercepted Oct. 10 when its Iranian origin raised the eyebrows of British customs agents in London, according to court records. The package weighed 110 pounds, and when the agents closely inspected it, they discovered the 33 pounds of opium in the grill??s legs. The opium has a $750,000 street value, a federal agent said in a sworn statement.

British officials notified the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the two agencies coordinated shipping the package to the United States Once on U.S. soil, British Airways employees and DEA agents moved the package to the suspects?? pickup location.

While they waited for the package to arrive, DEA agents staked out Seidov??s Fairfax home after finding his address in a criminal database. Seidov, 24, an Azerbaijan native, had been convicted of petty larceny in Fairfax in August. The conviction stemmed from a Dec. 13 incident in which he was charged with narcotics possession and possessing stolen property.

An agent surveying a Burke home connected to the phone number listed on the package??s delivery slip found that the two cars parked there were registered to Eskanddani. When the agent later arrested Eskanddani in connection with the opium shipment, Eskanddani reportedly said he has been smoking opium for 20 years.

During that time he has repeatedly gone to Iran to buy and bring back nearly two-ounce quantities of opium, he reportedly added. Eskanddani also reportedly said he didn??t know what was in the package when he went with Seidov to pick it up at Dulles.
