View Full Version : Ethylene to produce females

If ethylene is a known plant hormone to determine sex in cannabis
couldn't I put a bunch of ethylene producing fruits near my plants and hope they all turn female (When they are from seed)
that's probably not enough Ethylene
what if you theoretically had a Ethylene spray and you sprayed your plants?

I've actually read about experiments involving "feminizing" seeds by using bananas... The idea is this: As bananas ripen, they emit ethylene gas. Exposing the seeds to this gas should, theoretically, cause the percentage of females to be increased.
Search it out in Google or some other search engine.. There are some pretty interesting reads on the subject. :)

yea exactly but its such a low amount it might not have an effect
anyone else have any experiments involving Ethylene?

So you've obviously measured the amount of ethylene given off by a banana, and you know that it's not enough to have an effect.
I guess the scientists who performed the experiments were wrong.
Please accept my apology for responding to your thread.

whoa sorry I haven't checked yet, I'm just asking for anecdotal evidence
maybe an avocado or limes work better than bananas I haven't found anything about scientists and bananas on google yet
but I found something great that measures ethylene from some common fruits
Ethylene Gas C2H4 (http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Ethylene-Gas.htm)
Turns out Apples produce more Ethylene than bananas!
maybe we need to create a sticky devoted to Ethylene hehe
once we compile some more data lol but for now :hippy::rastasmoke:

I can't speak for Revanche, but perhaps an apology wouldn't be necessary were you to present facts to support your assertion. Without even a basic tutorial on how you tested the 'fruit outgassing for cannabis seed feminization' technique, your prissy answer is laughable.
Perhaps a simple link to those you are parroting would help...?
REV: There are a few femming techniques that don't involve rotten fruit. (light poisoning, ph swing, temp swings...)
One thing for sure...I wouldn't try this indoors, or near your ladies. (stench and bugs)
The more over-complicated you make your techniques...the more like work this hobby becomes. Keep it simple.

Hey Revanche, sorry about my crankiness last night... My girlfriend just had a baby, and sleep has been lacking in my world... LOL
Sorry I was a cranky person, I was wrong to take it out on you.
Anyway, here's the site about the topic of ethylene gas and feminization of cannabis seeds that I thought you might find interesting. Here's the link:
Robert A. Nelson: Hemp Husbandry ~ Botany & Breeding (Ch 4) (http://www.rexresearch.com/hhusb/hh4bot.htm)
And here's the part in the chapter that's relevant:
"Treatment of hempseed with ethylene gas will increase the resulting number of female plants by about 50%. Ethylene is produced by certain plants (i.e., bananas, cucumbers and melons), and these can be used to treat hempseed in a simple manner. About two weeks before you plan to sprout the seeds, place them in a paper bag or envelope and put that in a plastic bag with the peels of a ripening banana or cucumber. Replace the peels after a couple of days, and change the bags to prevent mold.
Hempseed can be feminized while they are forming on the plant. Fruit peels are spread around the area for two weeks before the plants enter the flowering phase. Remove the skins when the plants begin to flower. Otherwise, treatment with Etephon will accomplish the same effect."
Check out that site, actually the whole thing is chock-full of good scientific information. :)
Hope it helps!
Peace, and good luck in your quest! :rastasmoke:
