View Full Version : Germinating - Where did I go wrong?

Seeds are N. Lights, from a friend's outdoor grow. Picked 7 of the largest, darkest, mottled seeds that didn't crack when squeezed. Dropped in a shot glass full of water. After 3 days, nothing. Moved them to a tupperware and used the paper towel method. At the same time, picked out 7 more choice seeds and put them in the paper towel as well. Stashed the tupperware under a bunch of clothes (insulation to keep them warm, that was my thought) and after 3 more days, nada. The paper towel is still wet - but it feels cold, maybe this has something to do? What am I doing wrong?? :(

sometimes it takes up to a week (or two?) depending on temperature and other factors I am unaware about

So I've read. I haven't disturbed them yet, but from the threads I found, it seems most see germination within 72 hours?

Try scuffing em up a lil with a nail file around the edges of the bean. Helps em break open.

did you leave the seed sunk in the water?
i think they need oxygen to germinate so if they sank in the cup of water they would be starved of oxygen. maybe thats why it didnt work
i always opt for the paper towel method from the start its always worked for me
i just place the seeds on a damp papertowel an put another paper towel over it place that in a ziplock bag and leave it somewhere warm. they normaly crack within about 30-40 hours

I did this with the ones that didn't sink within the first couple of hours of being in the water. I guess I can try with all of them

Yes, for a couple of days. I read some other threads were people swore by the glass of water method, so I don't know. I've got your preferred setup now, just with tupperware instread of ziplock. And I assume it would be warm under a big pile of socks?

Part # 1
Hi DasPachy ;
You probably MAY have drowned the seeds that you left in water 3 days ; I believe that's a NO NO ; I guess unless SEEDS are very HARD .
Try this: Advisable to SOAK SEEDS 24 hours only ...........
FIRST : Boil enough water on stove top & (let cool); to fill a bevarage bottle 70% full. ( I use a WASHED 12 o;z. Coke-Cola plastic bottle )
I then drop seeds that I want to germinate into the bottle; HELL I flip it over SEVERAL times, WITHIN that 24 HOURS ; that way I know SEEDS are thoroughtly WET to get started; RIGHT ? OKAY.... I then put the bottle in a DARK place , so the SEEDS know that it is time to wake up & GROW.
This is Important; at least I think so................
Part # 2
I use 2 CERAMIC BOWLS :
The BOWLS are only about 7 inchs around & maybe 1 inch deep, and then I use 3-4 a PLAIN Paper Towels ( NO Ink) ; that are saturated to WARM to HOT then MOISTENED; wring out TO MEDIUM to touch .
Part # 3
Then set on top of your DRYER ROOM shelves; or the top of DRYER itself & make sure that you run the DRYER for a half hour or so. Rcomend; CHECK for sprouting every few hours ?`
Okay; time to go to bed ; and probably by the next morning you can check carefully the Paper Towels; to see if the SEEDS have SPLIT & a white sprout has come out of EITHER end of SEED ???
Part # 4
Where the WHITE part of seed has SPROUTED; plant this END DOWN ; and plant 2 times the WIDTH of origional seed.
If the seed is GOOD ; I have SPROUTED IN 8 hours ; around 80-90 PERCENT.
Good Luck HELL maybe we will BURN a BOWL or two together ; SOMETIME ..................

My favorite way to germinate is as follows-
Step#1-Float the seeds in a shot glass of bottled water for 12 hours...
Step#2-In one of those plastic chinese takeout containers with the clear top,I put 2 wet paper towels on the bottom, then the seeds, and then I sandwich them with 2 wet paper towels on top...The clear lid goes on with an inch opening...
My favorite place to germinate is in the bathroom because if it doesn't feel warm or humid enough, you can just turn the shower on hot for a couple of minutes and make the envirornment like a tropical jungle...:420thought:

It's only warm under a layer of insulation if there is a heat source under there too... lol!
Cigar tube with just a couple drops of water. Seeds in tube. Cap. Place on top of fridge. Check after 24h. Plant with tap root pointing down when it emerges, in 24h- several days depending upon strain.

get a pimp hat put the tub under the hat put the hat and tub ontop of the screen.

HAHAHAHA awesome.

Funny, I have a pimp hat I could put to just such a use. Alas, mine is covered in 100 dollar bills with long white fuzz all around the brim. May not be prime growing conditions ;)

I put them in rapid rooters and water them. That's it. Your seeds could be bad if they all came from the same place I suppose.

The 14 seeds referred to above did nothing. Not having a cigar tube, I used a case of contact lenses, put a few drops of water into each side and dropped 3 seeds in each side. I put the case on top of the cable box. 2 days later, I think I might be beginning to see the tip of a taproot from 1 of the seeds. Cross your fingers for me!

Also, I just noticed there's something in the water now too, it looks like some sort of white fiber-ey stuff, almost like white algae or something. What's with that?

this is a bad idea... if u havent soaked the seeds yet this would be okay but cannabis doesnt need this... ive germinated hundreds of cannbis seeds, and the paper towel meathod works everytime for 95%, and when it doesnt work, its cause the seed was no good from the beginnning... u dont need and scruffing..
also ive read even any touching the seeds with ur hand after uve began the germination process use a tweezers and squeeze gently or u will squeeze the root. the oils from your hand will block the root from feeding. but u should not need to scruff up cannabis seeds ever... but also start with the paper towel method from the beginning of adding water to a seed. no submerging them in a bath... how would u like if u were born in a bathtub and werent allowed to breath for 1-2-3 days.

u need to look at the principle of how a blanket and insulation works.... u need to maintain heat, or blankets simply help prevent heat from being lost. so blankets and socks no matter the size of the pile or how small, its not going to bring warmth to ur seeds

Maybe this is why the water has gotten milky? Sheesh, just can't win, first too cold, now too warm. I checked out the top of my fridge like you suggested Stinky, but it was actually pretty cold to the touch.
