If it's going to be your first vape (and even if it isn't), I would recommend the VaporBrothers brand. Specifically the non-hands free version but that's just me. It's not too pricey, but extremely reliable (and very nice-looking). Getting the right hit can take a little practice, but after trying many different styles and brands, I've settled with VB.
Also, if you're not looking for something intense like the Volcano, the VB is quite nice because it has a ceramic mineral heater which heats up fast and is completely non-toxic and metal-free... save your lungs!

You should look at the Purple-Days vape. It's becoming a cult classic. Girls seem to like it too. It's the first direct draw vape my wife has wanted to use. In fact lately she's been hogging it.

I'll throw a shout out for the Da Bhudda Vape. Not saying it's better than any of the others since I haven't played around with them. But it does an excellent job (much better than my cheap Vape Bros knock-off). The ceramic element heats up very fast. The hits are potent. And it's easy to load, use, and keep clean.
I'm guessing that it's big brother, the SSV, does at least as well if not better. And I'll admit that the SSV is much cooler looking :D. I've asked Santa for one for Xmas, but I've been a bad boy this year, so I'm not holding my breath.

You will not go wrong with the V tower exteme vaporizer. I got mine last week and used the shit out of it all weekend long. There is seriously no wasted vapor in this thing. I like how you can take whip hits with it without using the fan and that you can just fill up the bags with the vapor. The only thing I think you would ever have to replace over time is the bags but other than that, everything else ca be cleaned. I say go for it while they are cheap. No bad reviews from me at all on this thing. I have a Vapir 5.0 and this thing puts it to shame no doubt. Happy Vaping!!!

but i'm going to have to agree with vape-find on this one. i've had a herbalaire before but just bought a purple-days and the hits are delicious. i smoke about half the amount than i would if i used a bong, and it's much easier to control doses due to it's .2g bowl size (small). this makes it easy to medicate accurately and also to space out your herb and therefore conserve. at least that's what i'm thinking having used it now for a few days, but who knows, the vapor tastes so good i may just keep on vaping!

it's much easier to control doses due to it's .2g bowl size Actually seelos, the bowl capacity is more like .025g. I got my scale out (accurate to .01g) and loaded 10 bowls, weighed the 10 bowls worth and divided by 10. After 5-6 tests like this, I got an average of about .025g per bowl. So 4 PD bowls only = .1g. It is amazing how much vapor you can get from a bowl that's 1/4" in diameter and a 1/4" deep. The Purple-Days has to be about the most efficient vape on the market. Some enjoyable hits too.

I tried 3 vapes (cheap crap mostly) before the Volcano and never looked back.
IIRC the Volcano is the only 'medical' class device - but I don't know about some of the newer vapes on the market. If price is an issue there are lots of 2nd hand Volcanos going cheap. Mine is 2 years old and is totally faultless.
If you could test drive some first though - that might help! I was lucky enough to try the Volcano in Amsterdam, but that's a whole other story...
Whatever you purchase you won't beleive how lush vaping is!

Why Cannabis Vaporization?
Vaporization is a technique for avoiding irritating respiratory toxins in marijuana smoke by heating cannabis to a temperature where the psychoactive ingredients evaporate without causing combustion.
Laboratory studies by California NORML and MAPS have found that vaporizers can efficiently deliver cannabinoids while eliminating or drastically reducing other smoke toxins.
Like tobacco, marijuana smoke contains toxins that are known to be hazardous to the respiratory system. Among them are the highly carcinogenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, a prime suspect in cigarette-related cancers. These toxins are essentially a byproduct of combustion, separate from the pharmaceutically active components of marijuana, known as cannabinoids, which include THC. Although there is no proof that marijuana smoking causes cancer, chronic pot smokers have been shown to suffer an elevated risk of bronchitis and respiratory infections. Respiratory disease due to smoking may therefore rightly be regarded as the primary physiological hazard of marijuana.
Cannabis vaporizers are designed to let users inhale active cannabinoids while avoiding harmful smoke toxins. They do so by heating cannabis to a temperature of 180 - 200° C (356° - 392° F), just below the point of combustion where smoke is produced. At this point, THC and other medically active cannabinoids are emitted with little or none of the carcinogenic tars and noxious gases found in smoke. Many medical marijuana patients who find smoked marijuana highly irritating report effective relief inhaling through vaporizers. Users who are concerned about the respiratory hazards of smoking are strongly advised to use vaporizers. Alternative devices, such as waterpipes, have been shown to be ineffective at reducing the tars in marijuana smoke (Report).
Many models of vaporizer are currently on the market. A review of the various types can be find at Your online guide to Vaporizers. (http://www.vaporinfo.com). Following is a list of some products currently advertised on the Internet:

check out the vaporizer lounge I made a comparison of the Volcano vs the Extreme
for a first timer/someone low on budget I would definitely recommend the extreme for someone who has the cash to spend, I would go with the volcano
The extreme is very nifty with the remote and whip hits :)
if the volcano had a remote....:rastasmoke:

I f you are looking for an uber quiet vaporizer that has literally no weed smell then you should get a Volcano Vaporizer. There is no vaporizer like this one! It actually fills a bag up with the sweet sweet Vapor and the bag can be carried around and passed with ease. Take just one of these bags down to your face and you will be stoned for hours on end. The Volcano is the Vaporizer that is Found in all of the MMJ dispenseries because it enables one to taste and differentiate betweeen different strains of bud. I vaped with the Volcano this whole past summer just upstairs from my parents room. They never could smell a thing! When little brothers storm in the room they couldn't smell anything! I am selling mine on Ebay at the moment. I have had it for about 6 months, but i must sell it to pay for my move out to California. MMJ Card Here I Come! The link to the Auction is Volcano Vaporizer--Solid Valve System Must See!!! - eBay (item 190266446764 end time Nov-19-08 12:33:11 PST)

hon, do yourself a favor, do NOT buy a junkass Vapor Bros., or other 'whip-type' vaporizer ... get an 'HerbalAire' Vaporizer, basically the same as a Volcano, but much cheaper ($225-$250) ... yes, I HAVE owned the Vapor Bros., and I firmly stand by my 'junkass' description ... herbalAire - Smokeless Herbal Vaporizer (http://www.herbalaire.com/) ... try one, compare it to the others, you'll agree, guaranteed  ... just so you're not misled, with ANY vaporizer, save the leftovers, and smoke conventionally the next day ... you will get just as stoned, PROOF that vaporizers don't extract all the psychoactive ingredients ... but, it sure does stretch your stash, and protects your lungs ... just so you'll know

in conclusion
I recommend the Volcano or the Extreme Vape
if they gave the volcano a whip capability and a auto-turn off setting and a remote and different fan speeds
aka combined the Volcano and the Extreme
The extreme volcano would be the best thing on the market
