I'm having problems getting my clones to root. My setup is cheesy I use a heating pad and use tuperware as my humidity dome. The first time I cut about 25 and only 4 made it. Is that typical for a first try? For my 2nd try I cut 16 and turned the heating pad up. It's been almost a week and I don't see any roots. The tuperware doesn't completely seal around the bottom could this be affecting the humidity? Is there a rooting hormone besides the dipping gel that would help? What am I doing wrong here?

How warm does it get inside the 'dome'? You might be steaming them to death.

Image REaper used to call my propagation setup the 'Pot Roaster' when I had to run heating pads under it.
There's a cloning guide in my siggy. You need to sterilize your gear- spray it with scrubbing bubbles or lysol and rinse before use. Low light, stable temps right AT 75-80, stable humidity, clean environment, and if your gel is spoiled you're fooked. I stopped using Clonex bacause it goes bad real fast. Dip n grow has fungicide in it... fyi.. ;)

If cuttings are not lookings so hot i had a friend suggestion clonex over rootech well dipping gel after many test i agreed and that liquid clonex sprayed on leaves i noticed helped, also mother plants fed less nitrogen .. don't feed mother plants grow that is stupid feed them bloom and your cuttings will root faster because of the store carbs and sugar. Heat pad is bad most of the time.. unless the room is cold. Peace and vote obama!
check out Superior Growers Supply (http://www.superiorgrowers.com) for a supply list of ionic bloom or general hydroponic bloom to feed mothers and clonex liquid or even grab a feeding schedule off of hydrodynamicsintl.com or generalhydro.com for nutrient feeding, greenfuse bloom and co2 is great for flowering plants and in boosting p-k is great to stack on bloom nutrients. Grow nutrients are the best type of food for a plant but will encourage longer flowering cycles with more development. peace

Keep trying. I took me a long time to be successful at cloning and I was causing the problems I had myself.

1. I kept messing with them and taking them out of the medium to see if any roots had grown.

2. I wasnt waiting long enough for the roots to show

I think a week is a little early to see roots unless ur doing them airoponically.. 2 weeks might be more like it before you see roots.

Wobster is right, when cloning it really is best to allow at least 2 weeks for a good rooting system to build up and dont pull out the cutting/s to see if there are any roots. All good things come to those who wait :)
ive taken thousands cuttings over the years and have only lost a few in my time. I 'always' use a 2ft Aquarglo fluresant light for cloning which is about 18 watts (18 hours on and 6 hours off) with room temp between (76 - 80). i keep my clones about 7 - 10 cm from the light at all times and spray once in the morning and once at night with tepid (pre-boiled & airated) water. I always use rockwall pellets and i do confess i also use clonex though you really dont have to use a roting compound at all it just mearly speeds rooting by a few days or so.

Don't add any nutes to the water at all when cloning, they wont need it until there is a rooting system developed.

Some good things to remember when cloning:::

Best light cycle is either 24/24 or 18/6
Best room temp 75-80
Best sizt of cutting 3 - 4 inches from a new soft stem
Spray leaves with tepid well airated water twice daily(with lights off)
ALWAYS use steralized utensils when cutting
NEVER put rootless clones in direct sunlight they WILL die
What you choose to root your clone in is optional
Don't keep handling the clones let them do their job(caution is needed when handling clones because if you have been handling other plants you could potentially transmit deseases from other plants to the clones)
A dome is not a vital need though it helps keep the moisture in for longer periods.
Most important requirement is Patience ;)

just my 5 cents worth

Haven't tried cloning on a large scale, but do have a short story about the ONE that successfully rooted...

I had 4" floro's hangin above my plants from SunRiser brand hangers. One day, one bulb went out... twisted it just a weeee bit, and it fell on my FAVORITE little girl!!! I had previously topped it, and one of the main branches had broken off...

I ran downstairs to get my GreenLight Root Hormone powder (that stuff is awesome, btw). I then cut the branch at around 45 deg and put it in some powder, then into tap water.

I have this rubermaid-type container with a locking lid... might hold a quart of water... anyways... duct taped the outside to prevent light and cut the hole in the lid to put my netpot in. Also put a grommet in the top the size of my airhose in case I wanted to put a stone in there.

Filled the pot halfway with hydroton, then a rapid rooter DOUSED in tap water and GL root hormone, stuck the "cutting" in there, and covered it with more hydroton.

I then stuck this in a closet with one 13w blue CFL. The roots grew an INSANE amount with NOTHING but the rooting hormone and tap water (ph ~6.7). Ended up throwin her in with my other flowering plants and she is doing wonderful...

I do plan on trying the cloner with the pipe insulation... that seems like an awesome cloner... guess you could have one or two for each strain....

i did also forget to mention when cloning it is essential to cut/trim off any dead or decaying matter or it could spread like wild fire through out your entire crop of clones. If you have tips that have turned yellow its best to cut off those tips to help prevent it from spreading and clear away any old trimmings.
